GIG REVIEW – ADAM LAMBERT AND QUEEN – UKRAINE JUNE 2012 (plus photos/set-list)
Posted on June 30, 2012
#AntiAIDSmaidan twitter tag to raise awareness.
Elton John organised this concert to highlight the growing danger of AIDs in the Ukraine, it was also timed to link into the Euro 2012 Football Tournament with thousands of people enjoying a free gig in Maidan Nezalojnosti (Independence Square).
More on Elton’s charity here - ejaf.org/ - there is a ‘Donate’ link on the front page.
Before we get to see Queen and Adam Lambert on stage we watched a 20 minute documentary on Queen with the focus being on lead singer Freddie Mercury who lost his life to AIDs back in 1991 at the age of 45. Elton John and the remaining members of Queen were a few out of the 35 people who attended his funeral. Although Freddie kept his diagnosis a ‘secret’ until 24 hours before his death it is thought he was formally diagnosed in 1987.
The opening to the Queen/Adam Lambert set was pretty spectacular, lots of blue smoke and the sounds of ‘Flash’ before some awesome guitar from Brian May, Adam shouts of the crowd ‘yeah c’mon’ before launching into ‘Seven Seas of Rhye’ as their opening song.
Adam is wearing a lot of leather! Leather jacket with some awesome silver studs intertwined with some silver chains, he is also wearing leather trousers and what looks like some platform boots – there is a lot of interaction between Adam and Brian on guitar and Adam is also busting out some amazing moves whilst Brian is jamming away!
Second track is ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ which definitely suited Adam’s style of singing..Adam also lets out a swear word after this song…fill in the gap as it went ‘f*ck you’!
Next track was ‘We Will Rock’ you – done in a slightly different style I just felt that they had sped the track up a little bit and shortened the length of gaps between the chorus and verses..it worked in terms of this gig as the energy is so high paced there.
Little break after that track which allowed Adam to speak to the audience in Independence Square before they started up Fat Bottomed Girls – what an amazing song it is! I have to say it wasn’t the best rendition of the song I’ve ever heard but I thought that it was the backing singers who were actually a bit out on this song, perhaps their in ear mix wasn’t right. It was a great moment for Adam to take centre stage though which he did with all of his charisma..
After the song he shouted..I WANT TO SEE SOME FAT ASSES TONIGHT…LET ME SEE SOME ASS, C’MON THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL!
‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ is perhaps one of Queen’s most iconic and well known songs so it is a huge congratulations to Adam for making the song sound as good as ever and also for putting his own spin on the track without losing the fact that it is originally a Queen song which is he obviously singing with Queen…the way he sang ‘sex machine’ was just magical Again when it’s the guitar solo moment he allows Brian to take to the centre stage but still looks like he’s having the most amazing time up there…which I imagine he is!
Brian May then took a backseat whilst Roger Taylor’s son took over his drumming duties to allow him and Adam Lambert to sing ‘Under Pressure’ together – this really was one of the ‘moments’ of the gig, it was more of a duet in places and it really worked, Adam was tackling all the big notes but his and Rogers’ voices blending in together really nicely, I must admit I didn’t know Roger’s voice was that good still – he covered David Bowie’s parts really easily! For a 1981 song as well it is just timeless…
After the song Adam says ‘rocking the f*ck out’!
‘I Want It All’ is the next song…I could actually imagine Adam writing something like this for his solo career, it’s full of attitude. This was from their thirteenth studio album..which is just incredible, I can’t imagine many current music stars producing such iconic tracks that far into their career. Again great interaction between Adam and Brian on this track, anyone going to see their London gigs is in for a total treat, and as I tweeted out the other day there are still circle tickets available for those gigs.
I am trying to think of something critical to say at this stage of proceedings just to play devils advocate but I really haven’t noticed anything negative about whole gig…the only thing I would say is that the audience seem really tame..I’d be going nuts!
Who Wants to Live Forever is the next song, this is a tune that always gets me right in the heart..Adam’s facial expressions and emotions during this song are a joy to watch.
Roger Taylor sings the whole of ‘A Kind of Magic’ whilst Adam goes off stage – costume change time? Again Roger man I’m sorry I didn’t realise your voice was that good, he also wrote this song entirely on his own and although it debuted to mixed reviews at the time I think now we can all agree it’s a great song.
Roger also sings These Are the Days of Our Lives another song that always touches my heart and makes me go misty eyed I think it’s because it makes me think of Freddie and how poorly he looked at around this time in Queen’s career :( going back to the present though I’m glad Queen are still touring in Freddie’s memory, it’s a poignant moment at the end of this song and Brian May looks visibly touched. Brian then sings ‘Love of My Life’ which is ANOTHER song that gets me emotional, he tells the audience ‘lets sing it for Freddie’ – the song was written by Freddie for a lady whom he has a long-term relationship with in the 1970′s, it was her who became his carer at the end of his days :( During the song Freddie is shown on screen and can be heard singing the song, Brian then sings along with him…*sobbing*
Again if you wish to donate to Elton’s AIDs charity you can here..http://ejaf.org/
Brian and Roger then perform a stripped back version of ’39 changing some of the lyrics to include ‘Ukraine’ which is a nice touch. Adam Lambert then comes back on stage and gets a few screams from the audience which is nice – it’s a good idea doing that split and having that time to remember Freddie.
Adam as I suspected has got a second costume on now, it consists of leather gloves and a fitted black blazer with some detailing on the collars. I think his trousers are a little more flared now too. We are then treated to a ‘drum off’ between Roger and his son..it was really cool to watch and listen too…such talent! Then Brian May has his solo guitar moment which was also genius, it’s also ‘cooled’ down the atmosphere down a bit as well, not in a bad way but it a ‘reset’ the audience way before they move into…
I Want to Break Free! Such an amazing song and Adam and Roger’s voices also blend together really well on it. Adam sings this track pretty straight to the track and the guitars all sound amazing on it. He then says ‘I wanna get sexy’ before the band go into ‘Another One Bites the Dust’! Adam leads the crowd in some audience participation throughout this track.
Released in my year of birth in 1984 next up is ‘Radio Ga Ga’ I hope the audience get into this track, if you can’t get into this then really you can’t get into anything! Again Adam sings this track pretty much to the record, I agree this is the right thing to do though, especially on the ‘sing a long’ tracks you don’t want the audience confused as to where the song is going next on numbers like this. The hand clapping moment looks great too even on my live stream. Adam is now working up a sweat as all the hundreds of lights flash around him in Kiev.
Yes!!! My favourite Queen song – Somebody to Love – I always feel that this song just has an amazing amount of energy and passion about it and Adam brings both of those to the song in spades, it’s a more theatrical piece and really allows Adam to show off his full vocal range from the deeper parts right up to the falsetto moments – one of the highlights of the gig for me. Bloody hell the last notes of that song as well…amazing stuff! Adam’s little dance by the side of Brian as well – cute!
Crazy Little Thing Called Love is the next song on the set-list, this track to me always sounds like it should have been recorded in the 1950′s it’s got that swing feel to it, in fact it was released in the late 70′s from Queen’s album ‘The Game.’ Adam gets into the feel of the song pumping his fists in the air towards the crescendo.
Wow and a huge scream from the audience (the largest I’ve heard all night) for The Show Must Go On – this was written primarily by Brian May and documents Freddie’s battle with AIDs and his insistence to carry on performing even though he was seriously ill. The band questioned whether Mercury could even sing the song as at the time he could barely walk, Freddie being Freddie though of course smashed it. He never performed it live with Queen but the song was released as single in 1991 just six weeks before Freddie died. Elton John provided the vocals for the track in 1992 when it was first performed live at a concert for Freddie – incredible song and incredible vocals.
Adam then thanks the audience for all their energy throughout the night before going into Bohemian Rhapsody, this again is done as a sort of duet between Adam and Freddie Mercury with his image again being shown on the big screens in the square. All of the band then exit the stage whilst the iconic image of the video for the song plays on the screen…they all then come back on for the third part of the song. Adam bows down at Brian’s feet at the guitar solo part!
At the end of the song Adam blows some kisses out into the audience and the whole band take their bows.
The little teases! After several minutes off stage but with the lights left on the band return for an encore song, Roger tells the crowd that ‘they have been beautiful’ before they strike up ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ more recently the band have performed this song with the Foo Fighters and it also served as their concert opening song for a long time. I should add that Adam hasn’t come back on for the encore.
And Adam is back to sing ‘We Will Rock You’- can’t believe I forgot that track, I was just thinking what else are they going to sing! They then welcome was I presume is a local singer onto the stage to sing the chorus…I’ll be honest he isn’t that good! I thought it was singing it in a different language but I think it’s just his accent! All good for world relations though! I only caught his first name which was ‘Victor’! Edit - Romanchenko is his surname!
Then the encore moves onto ‘We Are The Champions’ Queen have such an amazing back-catalogue of songs don’t they? This song also ties into the football tournament in Ukraine as well of which the final is tomorrow. This marks their last song and the concert finishes with some great fireworks and even the politicians are throwing rock signs up in the air!
Conclusion – book your tickets to see Adam Lambert and Queen now – they have produced a very professional and tight set but with magical moments and Freddie homages to boot. If you can’t see them live then lets all pray for that DVD release!
Please share this review if you enjoyed it – every little helps!

7th June 2012
Press Release: Queen + Adam Lambert and Elton John To Play ANTIAIDS Show in Kiev
The day before the EURO 2012 final Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation together with Elton John and Queen will partake in a match against AIDS.
On June 30th 2012 in Kiev, Ukraine, at Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) a grand charity concert dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS will take place. Good friends of Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation as well as colleagues in fighting AIDS, legendary stars Elton John and Queen with Adam Lambert will rock Kiev to say: "Your life is not a game! Let's stop AIDS together". This concert will be the largest social and cultural event of EURO 2012. It will gather hundreds of thousands of people on the main square of Ukraine and be seen by millions of viewers on TV screens throughout Ukraine and Poland.
In recognition of the importance and the charitable status of this project, the musicians who will perform on that night will waive their fees.
The concert will be held under UEFA support one day before the EURO 2012 final in the official FAN zone of the football Championship. It will be broadcasted live on Ukrainian and Polish Television.
"On June 30th at the main square of our country the most titled and bright English team of Elton John and Queen will play for Ukraine against AIDS" - Elena Pinchuk said at the press-conference devoted to the concert announcement which was held today, June 7th 2012.
VIP guests will have an opportunity to make charitable donation for the new joint project of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation aimed at educating Ukrainian children about HIV/AIDS using symbols and rules of football.
This is not the first time that the artists who will be taking part in the concert are visiting Kiev with the charitable mission of helping fight AIDS in Ukraine and to protect millions of people against HIV-infection. Their cooperation with Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation has a longstanding history.
Sir Elton John, whose AIDS Foundation has been working in Ukraine since 2002, first joined forces with the Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation in 2007 with a free national concert and a joint nationwide programme aimed at helping HIV-positive children. Elena Pinchuk ANTIAIDS Foundation provided a grant of 2.5 million USD for the five-year project "Children+", which was also supported by the Big Lottery Fund from the UK. To date, the programme has directly supported over 3,000 children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
In 2011 the two Foundations presented a second initiative to the public - a new joint charity project providing prevention and care services for homeless girls and young women who live and work on the streets of Kiev, one in five of whom are living with HIV.
One of the lasting results of a concert by Queen + Paul Rodgers at the Kharkov Plosha Svobody (the Liberty Square) organized in cooperation with the Mercury Phoenix Trust (www.mercuryphoenixtrust.com) in September 2008 was a new care centre for HIV-positive children in the Zelenogaisky orphanage in Kharkov which was repaired and renovated using the funds raised the concert.
Thanks to the ongoing media campaigns of the ANTIAIDS Foundation, the support of world-famous stars such as Sir Elton John and Queen, and numerous projects aimed to help people living with HIV/AIDS implemented by partner organizations, it became possible to reduce the growth rate of new HIV cases in Ukraine by five times in the last five years.
Elton John AIDS Founation:
The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is one of the foremost independent AIDS charities in the world. Its mission is to provide focused and sustainable funding to frontline programmes that help to alleviate the physical, emotional and financial hardship of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS, and to continue the fight against this worldwide pandemic.
Following the loss of many close friends to AIDS in the early 90s, including Freddie Mercury and seeing the lack of understanding and stigma attached to the disease at that time, Sir Elton John established the Foundation in the UK in 1993. EJAF UK focuses its grant-making on programmes in Africa, Asia and Europe. Since its establishment, EJAF has raised over $225m worldwide and supported more than 2000 programmes in 55 countries across 4 continents (www.ejaf.com)
For more information please contact: Anne Aslett, Executive Director on admin@ejaf.com
The ANTIAIDS Foundation (www.antiaids.org) was founded by Elena Pinchuk in 2003. Today this is the first and sole charitable organization committed to fighting against AIDS in Ukraine operating on private donations. During nine years of its work the Foundation deals constantly with HIV/AIDS prevention and provides help to people living with HIV/AIDS. The Foundation seeks to work at all levels from large national projects to targeted direct assistance to people affected by AIDS epidemic. The Foundation also regularly provides help to medical institutions and orphanages where HIV-positive children live. At the initiative of the Foundation mobile clinics were set up to help HIV-positive children who are living in remote regions of Ukraine. Elena Pinchuk "ANTIAIDS" Foundation also develops and implements social preventive and educational programs aimed at young audience. Among these programs is a project for homeless girls and young women vulnerable to HIV infection (in collaboration with the Elton John AIDS Foundation). Adam Lambert Will Remember Gigs with Queen "for the Rest of My Life"
The fact that Queen will be joined by ex-American Idol finalist Adam Lambert for a series of concerts this summer has been a much-talked-about subject, but on Saturday, fans will get to see what all the fuss is about.
Queen and Lambert will be performing this Saturday in Kiev, Ukraine, as part of a charity event dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Elton John also is on the bill for the show, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to Kiev’s main square.
The Kiev show is one of six in total that Lambert will perform with Queen this summer, as he assumes the frontman role that’s remained officially vacant since the band’s lead singer Freddie Mercury died in 1991 of an AIDS-related illness. A variety of other vocalists have performed with Queen since then, and the Idol alum knows how lucky he is to have the opportunity this time around.
“For me, personally, I think I’m gonna look back on this in years to come and kind of think, ‘Wow, what a treat. What an honor to be able to be asked to sing with legends,’” he tells ABC News Radio. “Their music is iconic and Freddie Mercury, for me, is obviously one the the very great performers in history and a definite idol for me.”
Lambert says the opportunity to “get up there and to pay homage” to Mercury, and “pay respect to his memory as a performer” is something he says he’ll remember “for the rest of my life.”
Adam also sees the Queen team-up as an educational experience. “I…think that I’m gonna learn a lot from it,” he tells ABC News Radio. “You know, working with [Queen]…. these guys have been in the business a long time and they’ve seen a lot and they’ve…been through time and trends…I think there’s something really magical about that.”
Queen songs are among the most difficult rock tunes to sing, because of their intricate arrangements and wide vocal range. So, are there any Queen songs he’s just not going to attempt to do? Lambert laughs, “There are a few that are daunting, let me tell ya! And then there’s some that I’ve sung many times before. So, I’m excited for the challenge.”
This isn’t the first time Queen and Lambert have performed together, of course: They first teamed up on the American Idol season-eight finale, where Adam faced off against Kris Allen and lost. Lambert also sang with Queen in 2011 at the MTV European Awards.

Singing in someone else's shoes (Poland)
Google Translate:, by Rzeczpospolita.
Is it possible to replace Freddie Mercury? Undertook this role, Adam Lambert, winner of the American edition of "Idol." Queen will perform with the July 7 in. Changes occurred in the famous frontmen group The Doors, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Genesis, and Polish - Jam, Myslovitz, Varius Manx. Not all replacement crowned with success
Adam Lambert is the winner of the American edition of "Idol." During the interrogation one of the judges accused him that he sings too theatrical. But for a singer who has performed lots of dead 20 years ago, Freddie Mercury, the greatest compliment and a great recommendation. Mercury fascinated after all, he loved opera and great excitement.
The similarities between the singers noticed economically active members of Queen - guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Three years ago, Adam Lambert sang for the first time with the accompaniment of hymn Queen - "We Are The Champions" - during the final "American Idol". Then he played a medley of classic hits of the group at the MTV Europe in 2011, now preparing for the five exclusive concerts in Europe: Wroclaw, Moscow and three in London.
Selection of Maya and Taylor are more than hit. Lambert has wielooktawowym tenor voice. Fits the style of Queen more than a rough timbre of Paul Rodgers, who toured with musicians before. After Freddie's death seemed an ideal successor to George Michael. However, he has his career and never took seriously the perspective of Queen singing for good.
Lambert is also the advantage that his solo career is growing rapidly. In mid-May released their second album, "Trespassing," which debuted in the first place, "Billboard". The album creation to share topowi American artists - Pharell Williams and Bruno Mars. This ensures that the new version of Queen, with interest on the youngest generation of listeners that the Mercury have the right to not have the faintest idea.
- The decision to invite Adam Lambert be pleased to cooperate with many people - assured Brian May. - I am sure that our choice would meet with the approval of Freddie.
- Queen for me phenomenon - confessed to Adam Lambert. - The prospect of sharing the stage with musicians of this band is almost surreal flavor. I had the honor to pay tribute to Mercury'emu, which has always been my musical hero.

TEXT YOUR REQUEST
Here are the spinning US stations that also take text requests. (To look up your local station if it isn't here, check http://www.requestadamlambert.com)
You can text 'Play Never Close our Eyes' or 'Play Lamb' or 'Request Never Close Our Eyes' to your local station, and then once in your phone, it's easy to resend it regularly. DO NOT SPAM TEXT! Max of 2 text per day per phone number.
Want to do an extra request? Request from the web, no more than once a day - free Web to Mobile messaging: www.textem.net/
Don't have a local station? Text Q102. Also people have had luck getting text alerts from texting a request for NCOE to WKTU.
