Adam Lambert joined legendary rock band Queen in a show held at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on Wednesday, July 11. The "American Idol" alum stood in for the late Freddie Mercury, the band's original frontman. Lambert went on stage decked out in a black leather number with spikes on his shoulders as he sang in front of a roaring crowd. He excitedly tweeted about the show before and after the gig. ... If there had been an earthquake, another Great Fire of London, or Armageddon, it would have gone unnoticed by the Hammersmith Apollo crowd last night. The energy created by the Radio Gaga clap-o-rama could have lit the Olympic flame for the duration of the games.
I was in the front balcony to one side (sec7) surrounded by both Queen fans and Canadian Glamberts, and by the time "Who Wants to Live Forever" started, we were all one very happy family. Queen produces that wall of sound, but balances it with the most exquisite plaintive guitar that almost weeps.
About 7:30 pm we could tell there was going to be a sizable crowd, by 8 pm there were a couple of "holes" in the balcony, but by 8:15 when Adam's family and friends filled the largest hole, the place was brimming with fans. Some of the GNT venues that I attended created their own wall of sound for Adam even through the breaks, but after major applause, the London crowd grew almost silent waiting for the beginning chords of the next song to determine appropriate hand/arm gestures and discovering which lyrics were next to sing back to their beloved Brian and Roger.
I spoke to a woman in Lamberts Souvenirs when I was trying to score a few extra bags. She said, is that your last name?, and I said no and explained. She said she had met him in another part of London in a coffee shop earlier in June and " was drawn by a magnetic pull" towards him. She got a photo and said he was gorgeous. Another set of tourist from Toronto, said, oh, he's the WDYWFM singer who wears make-up. We informed both about new album.
Another observation, the locals seem to really resent that London got the Olympics due to economic conditions. "Not enough money to host a bloody festival, let alone the Olympics, heard more than once. There is a plethora of suited types wearing lavender or pink shirts and ties. Girls favor hot pants with opaques or chiffon short skirts with patterned hose or bare legs. Scarves are colorful and ubiquitous. Gladiator sandals are seen next to biker or swashbuckler boots. Even men are wearing a rosy watermelon shade of slacks, and this same shade seems like the preferred pop of color for everyone. I saw a woman in platform silver shoes, a black and silver print long dress, and a black mesh picture hat with lavender trim at noon on Trafalgar Square, with a man be-decked in formal wear. An older couple with muscled calves an Olympian would be proud of sailed by on silver scooters wearing unmatched plaids and determined expressions.
Ok, went totally OTT, here's the postcard version: Went to concert. Had fun.

What a triumph, what a cultural feast! Am I being blasphemous if I say that Adam stole the show? Not from Queen, that is, but from all the naysayers, nitpickers, AI butthurts and 'Freddie's shoes' fetishists... I'm not gloating ( maybe just a little bit) , but it seems to me that in the last night's magic Adam managed to make everyone forget about all that 'emotional baggage' persistently being imposed on the show by many. He brushed it off of his shoulders as if it were a feather and , with glitter and smiles and unquenchable greatness demonstrated what a cultural phenomenon he is. I'm sorry universe, I'm sorry Queen fans, but I couldn't think, see or feel anything else last night but Adam. Once again, he pulls off the seemingly 'unpullable' : he conquers by mind not muscles, by understanding and knowing and patiently waiting for others to get it. And boy, did they get it or what! Not to mention the two fandoms berting in unison. Only Adam, only Adam... I don't know what will happen next, if there will be more shows with Queen in the future or what direction Adam's career will take, but last night's show doesn't have past or future - it's a magical moment suspended in time, precious creation of art, and as all the best art creations, timeless and silencing, making any logical analysis feel a bit irreverent. There's no need to defragment or deconstruct the magic by discussing its constituents - if you feel it, you feel it, if you don't, you never will, no matter what anyone says. And there is more tonight ;D What can I say, Adam makes me feel like the luckiest bitch in the universe! Thanks, bb! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ London Evening Standard: "LAMBERT UNDERSTANDS QUEEN."www.standard.co.uk/arts/music/queen--adam-lambert-hmv-hammersmith-apollo--review-7938206.htmlDaily Star: "QUEEN FANS HAVE SOMEBODY NEW TO LOVE " thelambrits.co.uk/blog/?p=4509 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ETA [looks up] ljsmack, mmmgoodcracker, thank you, and thanks everyone for all the recaps we got yesterday, and to everyone bringing over the goodies, it is very much appreciated!

The TALC video is amazing. You can see all sorts of details. Audio is a bit distorted. We can't have it all. :D
