'American Idol' Taps Swedish 'Idol' Producer as New Executive Producer
What an odd choice. Swedish Idol was cancelled for 2012 because TV4 had X-Factor and The Voice, but Swedish Idol is coming back in 2013 because X-Factor has been cancelled after 1 season.
That does not seem to jive with this "blockbuster" reference:
Trish Kinane, the executive producer of "American Idol" for FremantleMedia North America, said that Blankens will bring "the talent and energy needed to keep 'American Idol' strong." "Per is a creative and experienced executive who has been the show runner on the blockbuster 'Swedish Idol' for more than 5 seasons," Kinane said. "He is extremely passionate about 'Idol' and I'm very excited about his ideas and vision for keeping 'Idol' creatively vibrant. He brings the talent and energy needed to keep 'American Idol' strong."
I really hope he is brilliant but I am getting very skeptical that American Idol will remain competitive vs. be used as a cash-cow, that is, reduce expenses as low as possible and let it decline in the ratings. He appears to be an Idol traditionalist to me.
Swedish Idol had the same structure and types of themes as American Idol. And also incorporated "innovations" like 4 judges and letting contestants use instruments. The only innovative thing I can find is that they have let viewers pick songs in the later rounds of the competition.
Here are some of the themes from 2011 -- the last year aired:
Week 3: "From Sweden to superstar" Amanda Fondell - Jolene ( Dolly Parton ) Emil Elton - Cry Me a River ( Justin Timberlake ) Linni Barresjö - Angels ( Robbie Williams ) Molly Pettersson Hammar - Only Girl in the World ( Rihanna ) André Zuniga-Asplund - Tiny Dancer ( Elton John ) Amanda Persson - Heroes ( David Bowie ) Robin Stjernberg - Halo ( Beyoncé ) Olle Hammar - Beat It ( Michael Jackson ) Moa Lignell - Superstition ( Stevie Wonder )
Week 4: Big Band (I think this is a translation problem) Molly Pettersson Hammar - Natural Woman ( Aretha Franklin ) Linni Barresjö - Dark Lady ( Cher ) Robin Stjernberg - When a Man Loves a Woman ( Percy Sledge ) André Zuniga-Asplund - Oh, Carol ( Neil Sedaka ) Moa Lignell - Dream a Little Dream of Me ( Mamas and the Papas ) Olle Hammar - Back to Black ( Amy Winehouse ) Amanda Fondell - I've Got a Woman ( Ray Charles ) Amanda Persson - Fever ( Peggy Lee )
Week 5 (studio finals): My audition Olle Hammar - Feeling Good ( Michael Bublé ) Amanda Fondell - My Man ( Miss Li ) André Zuniga-Asplund - Here I Come / With you ( Barrington Levy / Oscar Linnros ) Amanda Persson - Keep On Walking ( Salem Al Fakir ) Robin Stjernberg - Who You Are ( Jessie J ) Molly Pettersson Hammar - White Light Moment ( Tove Strength ) Moa Lignell - When I Held Ya (Moa Lignell)
