cassie, would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.
I was just watching (again, yes, cannot seem to get enough of it) Somebody to Love, X Factor version and had some thoughts on Adam’s confidence.
I know there are people who can get up in front of an audience and sing with some confidence, even if they don’t have any training. Some people are genetically blessed with raw talent. So these people may have a certain confidence, based on previous reactions to their singing and their own evaluation of their singing.
But here are my thoughts on Adam’s confidence:
It is a result of his raw talent. But raw talent can only carry you so far.
As Adam has mentioned, his experience has trained him to know how to carry on when things are not perfect, like singing through a cold. Like performing in front of a wide variety of audiences and circumstances. Like having failed, or had a bad experience, and knowing how to learn from it and how to carry on. Grace on stage. Honoring others on the stage with you. Having a good time.
Besides the experience, training, training, training. Enough absorbed training that it is a solid underpinning for everything you do. Every decision you make musically. All based on knowledge, even if it is not what is directly referenced. It feels right to him, not solely because of artistic choice, but also because of his knowledge.
Another factor, IMO: respect for the craft, history, genres and styles of the craft.
And also just his (as I see it) philosophy of life.
So I was thinking that the confidence I see and love (He’s Got This) in Adam’s performances is so much deeper, so much more ingrained, so earned, so dependable, so, if I could coin a phrase, uncocky because he has worked and worked hard for it, and I respect him for that, it is based on so much more that raw talent.
And it is very very attractive, of course, but more that that, it makes me totally relax, enjoy the performance. I’m in good hands. That’s earned confidence, confidence without arrogance.
Gah, I just love this boy.

Okay, so I was watching X Factor UK this afternoon, hoping to catch a rerun of the QAL performance. No luck, of course, it was Big Band night or some such. Fine.
But I truly cannot get past Simon Cowell, aka Simon the Sinister, cooing and burbling away like someone's sweet old auntie about a performance of "Someone Like Me" from the Jungle Book being "my son's favorite song and mine, too" and how much FUN it all is.
Who is this person and what have they done with Simon??? Flabbergasted minds want to know...

Interesting topic, panda. Confidence, paired with humility and grace, is extremely attractive to me, and I agree that Adam has that. Where does it come from?
Studies have shown that people do not necessarily assess their own abilities accurately. In fact, those with the least ability often grossly overestimate their skill level, thinking they are above average. Those with the highest ability will actually slightly underestimate their skill compared with their peers. It has been demonstrated in a number of studies that you must have a certain level of competence to know whether you are competent. Perhaps this explains how the atrocious contestants of Idol auditions are so devastated to be told they can't sing.
From what I have read and heard, Adam had a naturally good voice, even at a young age. Certainly he got a lot of praise for it. Also important, the adults who were his directors and mentors were nurturing but highly demanding. The children were in a competitive environment and received critiques so they could improve. Specific, informed criticism is as important in building skill and confidence as specific, informed praise.
There is a great book about how people develop exceptional skills/talent. The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle says there are three components: master coaches, ignition (the spark that lights a strong passion and commitment), and deep, focused practice. Adam had the confluence of all three.
I agree with you that Adam's confidence comes from many years and countless hours of practice and experience. Nerves generally come from two causes: not having sufficient control/mastery of what you are doing, and not having control of the environment. Adam KNOWS how to use his voice forwards, backwards, high, low, loud, soft, rock, opera, on good days, on bad days, when sleep deprived, when ill, when nervous. From his many years (more than 2/3s of his life) performing, he knows how to control the environment as much as possible. As you pointed out, he also knows how to recover when things don't go as planned, when the sh%t hits the fan. Therefore, although he may be "nervous", he is confident that he can get thru it and do a good job.
I remember in some video clip from Idol days, he says something like "I know I can sing. I've been doing that for many years. It's more a matter of whether the judges will LIKE what I do." I think that his success, especially with Queen has given him additional confidence that the audience will like what he does.

Heres a Bbc1 onehttp://www.filmon.com/tv/bbc-one. BBC 1 Radio audio stream is available worldwide directly. BBC One video stream is only available in the UK but there are dozens of sites that restream it. For people outside of the UK, we do not need anyone at the concert to livestream video of the concert, we just need to have someone rehost the BBC video stream. And there are many people who already do this every day.
