Katharina @glamlawyer Video from BRISANT @devenlane: ANY OF MY GERMAN SPEAKING BB'S KNOW WHICH NEWS SHOW THIS IS FROM? TY youtu.be/SgZZxTj3lqE " Based on the picture at the beginning of the video, the TV show seems to be called Brisant, and that is a journal on ARD (1 Das Erste). Wish they had given Adam's voice a few moments to shine, like they did with Freddie's, instead of just letting him talk and turning the sound down when he is singing, because this way it might look to a new listener, as if his voice were not actually strong. But their translation of what Adam and Brian say, is spot on, much better than the other program was. The overall tone is a bit incredulous at the suggestion of a new lead man, but overall the segment is very pleasantly done, and hopefully creates curiosity in some. I'm so happy to see Adam back on German TV.

I'm back! Did you miss me? I was visiting family and had no time to stan Adam. ARRRRGH!
Now, what is this about WWTLF being OTT theatrical? Of course it is theatrical. That is the whole purpose of the song. Did you watch the clip from the movie?
The song is written to be bombastic. It is written to sonically fill the huge movie screen. I have seen a couple of versions sung gently and tenderly, by very good singers. It is just another pretty song that way, IMO. (Besides, much of the QAL show looks/feels like theater to me. I love it!)
Also, I think that as a duet, the drama is necessary. Otherwise, you just have two singers trading lines back and forth for no particular reason.
The great thing about Adam singing a duet is that it creates a natural compare/contrast situation. With lesser singers, the listener thinks "Damn! Adam just blows them out of the water. I didn't know he was THAT good." With another good singer, I think, "She's good. Very nice voice and technique. But, when Adam starts to sing, his voice and presentation is in high def in comparison."
Yeah, he is looking and sounding super on the show. Such a strong performer. Can't wait to see the professional edit.
On a different note, I love his line from the press conference. "Singing the Queen catalog is like running a marathon." I am glad to hear him acknowledge how challenging and taxing the performance is. (I've been saying it all along, but, now I can officially say, "I told you so!")

I want to send a little gift from Texas with an artist I love. I don't like everything he does but he does defy genre and plays the music he likes whether he writes it or not. So with a song that is a little blues, a little jazz, a little country, a lot of honky tonk ... here is Lyle Lovett, a Texas original. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d5-v0XVXE8

Well, theatricality can, for me at least, take on two forms.
One, which is more sanguine, comes from the gut. 'Thinks ahead' beforehand, to quote Adam, and then on stage, relies on instincts and uses all senses and every fiber of the body to express what he feels and wants the audience to feel too. He is always performing to the max, and totally natural and in the moment, letting the song carry him away. Adam normally is that kind of performer.
The other theatricality is the one that thinks about their movements while it is happening, in addition to any advance planning. 'If I move my arm up above my head on this note, then the camera will like this', so lets do it. This is a much more technical performance style and much more controlled, and H. F. clearly falls more into that category. Preparing her shows like this, allows her to do three hour specials, where she is the announcer, moderator, solo-performer, duet partner, and who knows what else for multiple vastly varying acts, and yet always is perfect and always pleasing to her audience.
I bet, she works incredibly hard and clearly has both talent and tons of fans. To me, though, I miss the warmth, the spontaneity. I find it a bit too much put on for my taste, and that is true for the whole Schlager-music genre in Germany, not only for her. It clearly has its fan base, and it's just not me.
The comical part comes in, when you now bring these two different styles of theatricality together. I think, they both at times, try to swing around to the other person's style, and while I was expecting Adam to do that, because he is always such a great duet partner and always does that, I was surprised and got to give credit to Helene for trying to do the same on her end too. But doing so takes each of them away from the place of comfort and strength from which they normally operate, so it just becomes noticeable and a bit comical.
Adam tries to get a read on her, what is she singing about and comes up empty, so he adjusts to her more showy style instead, but it becomes overwrought and funny, in a copy-cat kind of way. Helene, on the other hand, while vocally strong, is rhythmically challenged, tries eventually to swing into Adam's body language, which is full of beat, but she does it too late, and it's like she is trying out a new language.
For the purpose of promotion, this surely was great for Queen and AL, and Helene was a very generous host. But outside of marketing aspects, otherwise I don't think that Queen with or without Adam belongs on such a show, tbh. It is what it is. I think, the ballad fit better for the audience than the rock number, I think that Love Kills would have been a much better first choice and good marketing opportunity for the German market too. But maybe the show requested, that they do a rock number and a ballad, who knows.
Now, when it comes to other artists that I love, and that also come from this very instinctual place in their performance style, I think, I'll tonight go with Kate Bush. Wonderful artist, beautiful fluidity in both her singing and her movements and very much an artist I love.
Hope you'll enjoy.

I grew up on musicals, classical music, rock, pop and more -- as a young adult I fell in love with electronic music, new wave alternative music and even some punk. I have REALLY wide-ranging taste in music and love all kinds of blends. Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb is one of my favorite songs...and then I like Duran Duran and Erasure. I can measure periods of my life by the soundtrack in my mind. For example, I still can't listen to Roxy Music's "Avalon" without feeling sad because it was meaningful song between me and my ex-fiance. That was so many years ago, but still evokes emotion. I love great vocalists and have loved K.D. Lang, Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson and lots of other fabulous females as well. Having said all that, I have a special place in my heart for interesting music that mixes genres, and one of my favorite bands that does this is Alabama 3.
Most people know Alabama 3 (or A3) from the tv show The Sopranos, as their song "Woke Up This Morning" was the theme song. They are a British band that mix blues, rock, funk, country, acid house, electronica and more They have a pretty singular sound and their music has some pretty fascinating lyrics. I would love to have a conversation with some of these guys someday to ask where they came up with a few of their songs! They are supposed to be terrific live, and if they ever come over here to tour, I would go see them in a heartbeat (although they could certainly never top Adam!). Since it is their most well-known song, I included the video for "Woke Up This Morning", but you can find lots more by googling the band or checking Youtube.
As a trained vocalist, I love wonderful voices, but I also love bands and singers like this (and Leonard Cohen) because of the emotion and feelings they evoke. Their music is atmospheric in the best way. And you can dance to it!
