Yep, we grow up, grow old, and find new things to enjoy. Adam filled part of that void quite nicely

14 Million Watch Adam Lambert & Queen On New Year’s Livestream
by SAM on Jan 7, 2015, 3:58 pm • Fans of rock gods Queen and glam superstar Adam Lambert came together in record numbers on New Year’s Eve, to watch the band rock the stage at London’s famed Westminster Hall on an historic live BBC One broadcast. The band toasted in the New Year, blew eardrums to bitty-bits, and brought down the house with killer live versions of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” and a smoking-hot “Killer Queen.” Queen’s legendary guitarist Brian May immediately posted a video message to fans on his brand new YouTube channel, saying: “Thank you for your great comments about [the show]. It was a lot of fun. High pressure of course, because it was completely live and [we had to] do it to time — we had to finish spot on at twelve o’ clock… “But it was great fun and you guys who were there were amazing!” Brian said. Brian had even more to say, in the pages of the recent Classic Rock Magazine. Queen + Adam Lambert are featured on the magazine’s cover, which calls the band “the unexpected afterlife of rock’s royalty.” Inside the pages, Brian called the addition of Adam to the band “a gift from God.” Drummer Roger Taylor meanwhile had this to say about Adam’s vocal talents: “He’s incredibly musical, and we certainly take anything he says quite seriously. [His voice is] one in a billion!” Brian May then continued: “It’s nice to feel he’s part of it, without being swamped by nostalgia. I think we tread that line quite tastefully and carefully. Adam’s got that instrument, and goes for it.”

Well, in the case of Les Miz, Adam's comments were directed toward a specific work/group of people, so of course fans of that work would rush to its defense (unfortunately by coming for Adam himself using ad hominem comments instead of actually responding to his criticism). Sam Smith is just making general comments about unnamed people, so of course the average person is inclined to think, "Well yeah, some pop stars are awful! I hate today's music, so this makes total sense!" Though for the record, lots of people think Sam is a total dbag as well, based on those comments and prior comments he's made in the media.

I bet Onepopz took the numbers from before and after the fireworks and added them together to get 14.

Almost 14 million people watch the fireworks show last year. That was in the 2014 NYE press release and has morphed into this year's number in a few places online. I actually think that more than 14 million people watch at least part of the concert this year. They do not report TV ratings as unique viewers but as an average over time - and there were 10 million people watching the second part of the concert -- that is the average audience from 12:10AM - 12:30AM, not the peak. But 60% of the UK TV viewers watched the second part of the concert.

And Sam is not referring to singing -- he is apparently referring to how some unnamed pop stars treated him. Here is the HuffPo report about the V Magazine article.... The article is not published yet. The HuffPo writer lifted it from yesterday's Billboard article (also lifted by People.com and many other sites: The more "hip" rehashers covered the chest hair photo -- like this article: www.towleroad.com/2015/01/sam-smith-bares-some-chest-hair-for-v-magazine-photo.htmlCaution: You will see Sam Smith looking sexy on the cover if you click. :D I like Sam Smith's songs and his voice. But sexy? Just no way. *** I can't see any groundswell of support for Sam's comment. There are some funny guesses about who is is talking about. Most of them are either friends with Sam (Ariana Grande) or more successful than Sam (Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Swifty, etc.) *** Finally, it appears this comment is in part a reference to Riff Raff who was Katy Perry's date to the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
