Hope, this can all be worked out. From the originator of the Western pic Adam is using in his header...... Jessa Sininger @jessasininger · 8m 8 minutes ago By altered I mean cropped. Jessa Sininger @jessasininger · 9m 9 minutes ago Woke up to messages warning me that a pop star is using one of my illustrations on twitter without permission and altered. #ArtTheft What a shame that it's all backfired. If only the person who contacted the artist had got in touch with scorpiobert and Adam first to let them know, then Adam could've contacted the artist herself and she may have woken up to a lucrative commission instead of (justifiably) hurt and upset. Feel so sorry for scorpiobert who clearly had the best of intentions and now her first direct contact with Adam has been spoiled. I'm sure it's not too late to resolve it though. Sophie, thanks so much for your lovely message. Going to see Pasha (if you're a Strictly fan you'll know who I mean) shortly so will get in touch tomorrow.

And when he wakes up, he will just take it down. Doubt he will go through the trouble of crediting someone who called him an art thief. He asked where it came from & jumped the gun by using it. IMO, she is totally overreacting & should have contacted him first. Calling him an "art thief" w/o knowing the details was completely uncalled for. A little google search would have given her Adam's management & publicist to contact if she is that serious about this! Guarantee you, in a few hours, she will NOT have someone with 2+ million followers using her art! She is not part of mainstream pop culture, she is an artist who saw her art used without credit. She have every right to be upset. Seriously I'm the only one who saw it coming sooner or later? To much fan art in this fandom is made with this method. I was writing about it here more than once.

Oh for god's sake don't you start blaming the artist for what happened!!! I can't... This. Edit: things that people are writing to her on Twitter eh.

Oh for god's sake don't you start blaming the artist for what happened!!! I can't... This. I agree that we really need to second think all this use and reuse of others' work. Can you imagine if an Adam Levine fan decided it would be funny to replace Adam's head with Levine's...say from one of those Queen pics, then sent it off to Levine who loved it so much he used it as his banner! And that is not even something Adam created....perhaps this banner is really an instagram that belts out the Ghost Town whistle....then how would we feel? How would Adam feel? That it is ok because Levine is not making any money from it!! Somehow, I don't think most of the fandom would feel that way and I can only imagine the tweets the Levine fan, and Levine would get..... Adam posted this in the wee hours and even then knew to ask for the artist name...he just likely was tired and posted it too soon. I agree there was no intent to 'steal' except, possibly, from the original poster but still....it is what it is....and a good wake up call to all of us, I think.

I don't blame the artist for being upset. I had the same thing happen, and have a lot of fellow artists who have too. It's not a matter of "being grateful for exposure," it's about respect for one's work being co-opted by others. When someone does something like that, they basically take it upon themselves to say the artist is okay with it, and they may very well not be.
I am not upset at Adam, as he just basic saw something a fan sent him that he liked. And I am sure these fans doing this have only the best intentions, but once one goes from doing something for themselves to putting it out there for the world to see, they really need to step back and think first. never assume that because it's on Google Images, it's public domain. That's not how it works.

I thought people here might find this interesting: lifehacker.com/follow-this-chart-to-know-if-you-can-use-an-image-from-1615584870I haven't reviewed all the scenarios so I don't know where the current case falls. The internet is a dangerous and compelling place to be. There are plenty of potholes and the rules change. I agree that Adam's intentions were good but also that he will take the banner down. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't also contact the artist. I also think the artist missed an opportunity, if making a living out of her art was her wish. But artists are not usually business people. Think about this, when someone posts a cover of WWFM on youtube are they stealing Adam's art? It is Adam's art and the cover is altering that art to demonstrate someone's else sensibilities and talents.

Oh for god's sake don't you start blaming the artist for what happened!!! I can't... who is blaming her for what happened? According to the website, it was an assignment she did for a class in 2011, it's not even a piece of commercial art she has for sale. She should be credited for her work but IMO a bigger deal is being made out of it than it necessary. and people should stop going through google images and using the things they find there to make fan art. If it's not your original work then don't put it up on twitter.

"Think about this, when someone posts a cover of WWFM are they stealing Adam's art? It is Adam's art and the cover is altering that art to demonstrate someone's else sensibilities and talents."
I think this is a bit incomplete. If the individual doing the cover says "Hey, my cover of an Adam Lambert song." That is completely different from someone doing the same and say "Hey! Look at my song!"
In this case, these photoshops are like someone taking 95% of Adam's version, adding a line or two and saying, "This is mine!" and posting it around the web. I somehow think Adam (or any other artist) would raise an eyebrow to that.
And yikes at the people bending over backwards on Twitter to justify this behavior.

The theft occurred when somebody took the picture and put it into stock, not when a fan took a picture that is found in stock and use it for fanart. Now, when Adam wants to use it, it exits the world of pure fan art, he therefore asked the question, who made this, because the work he saw, did not have any credit, and the only way for him to find out, is to tunnel back to the source. Trying to do so, is not theft, and her tweet that he was trying to use her art without credit is simply false. But somebody clearly misguided her or she misunderstood the situation. But if she is such a professional, as she claims, she should be careful brand-marking somebody as thief, without understanding the facts. She did not use his name though, thankfully, even though that is now quite easily established via twitter.
No artist tried to steal, here. An artist tried to find out where a picture came from, because he noticed that it was not appropriately credited. She as the creator can now either ask him not to use it, or ask for credit and / or compensation. Her choice.
With the right of an artist to his art and social media interaction, there are some guidelines and laws, even though it is a difficult terrain. There is purposely a realm of private use and also of fair use (fan base situation belongs in there too), when no commercial gain is anticipated, and where rules are a little different than in the world of commerce.
That is why Adam asked, when it reached him. People are just totally over-reacting.
And anybody who is swinging the moral scepter here on behalf of artists, I don't understand why you yourself are either posting or consuming any of the following:
- Adam images or other images with the water mark removed,
- fan videos using either Adam's or any other artists music
- avis that are not ok'd for use by yourself
- gifs and pictures
- articles from press partially made available here or elsewhere
- video or film material
etc.
(basically the majority of what is found on social media)
===============
Adam understands copyrights and as an artist is impacted by inappropriate use of both his own music and his imagery all the time. He wants to see other artists' work respected too. Whoever painted a different picture than exactly this about Adam towards this lady, clearly did not communicate Adam's intention correctly, but tried to frame him instead. Or she misunderstood. Sad situation now.
