“My family has a Thanksgiving tradition where we make parodies out of movies; we haven’t done it in a while (but if we do it this year), I’d want to do the Hunger Games,” multi-platinum musician Adam Lambert grinned over the phone. “And if we manage to do it, I want to play President Snow.”
While breakfast was still settling in our tummies yesterday (Nov 26), the singer-songwriter was fresh from a gym session, just chilling out at his LA home in the early evening on one of his rare off days. Adapting to time differences has become “part of my life” for Adam, who catapulted to fame after coming in as runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009 – the rest, as they say, is history.
Having spent the last moments of his past few years away from home, we could almost feel him shrug, even over the phone. “I didn’t grow up celebrating Christmas and I make time for my family whenever I can so being away on New Years’ Eve isn’t such a big deal for us,” he explained. “Being on the road all the time (…) it’s a part of who I am and we’re used to it,” Adam concluded.
While Adam has been busy with his career, the 33-year-old hasn’t been back on our sunny shores for a couple of years now. Since his last visit in 2013 for his first full-scale concert, he counts touring with Queen and releasing his latest album The Original High as two of the most meaningful things on his long list of achievements.
Soon after he ushers in the new year in Singapore, he will jet off to China, where he will officially kick off his world tour in Beijing on Jan 3, followed by shows in cities such as Beijing and Tokyo. He will also have stops in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and US.
Teasing, Adam said, “This tour is going to be on a different level (…) you’ll have to come see it to find out,” stressing that while we won’t be able to enjoy the full concert, he’ll give party-goers a night to remember.
While we only managed to catch him for 10 minutes on the line, he did have a message for his fans before we disconnected the call. “Glamberts, I’m so excited to see you in the crowd in Singapore, in the front row and make eye contact with all of you – it’ll be fun and I can’t wait to spend the first moments of 2016 with you.”
An online petition to remove Adam from the festivities has garnered more than 12,000 signatures as of press time but Ms Debra Soon, head of MediaCorp’s Family (English) and Premier Segments confirmed, “Celebrate 2016 will be suitable for family audiences and conform with broadcast regulations”. A counter petition in support of Adam's performance has also been launched, garnering over 7000 signatures thus far.
Celebrate 2016 will take place on Dec 31 from 8 pm at The Float @ Marina Bay. Tickets are priced at S$168, S$88 and S$38 (excluding booking fees) and are now available on SISTIC. For more information on the countdown, please visit our microsite here.
