Amid a petition and counter petition to stop Adam Lambert from headlining the New Year’s Eve concert Celebrate 2016, the singer has released a timely statement
Hands up if your social media feeds have been abuzz with the petition surrounding Adam Lambert's upcoming performance at Celebrate 2016.
Slated to perform on 31 December at the televised countdown event organised by MediaCorp, Lambert's visit comes during a wave of performances after the release of his third album, The Original High, in June. It's produced two single releases so far: Ghost Town and Another Lonely Night — the latter featuring transgender YouTube sensation Gigi Gorgeous in the two-million (and counting) viewed music video.
However, the headliner has been met with more than just fans going gaga over his impending arrival. At the time of writing, more than 15,000 people have signed a petition for Lambert not to perform, citing that he's "an inappropriate choice" and that it "reflects a lack of judgment that could turn an otherwise dignified family-friendly event into a situation that is offensive and potentially divisive."
Meanwhile, a counter petition has also been created, with more than 14,000 signatures at the time of writing. This backlash has also garnered interest from international media, with CNBC reporting "Glambert alert: Singaporeans try to block Adam Lambert's NYE concert".
Warner Music released this statement by the pop star today:
"My performance at Celebrate 2016 will not only be a spectacular one, it will celebrate the entire human family in all its diversity.
I am a uniter, not a divider, and I believe in celebrating the human heart and spirit.
I have put together an entirely new show experience for my fans that is kicking off in Singapore.
The Original High tour is based primarily on new material, and it promises to be a thoughtful and sophisticated insight into the pursuit of happiness and self-worth.
There is no better time for celebration than at the moment one year changes into another, so I hope you will join me to celebrate the future and 2016."
You keep doing you, Lambert.
