I find this series of tweets interesting from a gay conversation perspective. It was not too long ago that direct reference to gay sexual practices would be avoided as part of public discourse. Innuendo for sure, think Adam and Kris and the bunk bed situation on the tour bus, but not point blank reference. So I wondered about the interaction and although I was pretty sure Olly Alexander was open to it, if MNEK was as well. I think this is the most open I have seen Adam tweet.
Anyway, here is Olly's original tweet, gay t-shirt and all
Adam responded back with the bottom/top tweet which is cheeky, but funny
Olly retweeted Adam's tweet and then MNEK actually responded to Adam's top/bottom tweet with the "eyes watching you" which I took to be a you're so funny response
Then Adam upped the ante by responding to MNEK with a 'oh yes I did' reply, balancing it with an 'either way is fine with me' connotation
Adam then tweeted out MNEK's new song
Having assured myself that everyone in the twitter conversation was on board with the topic, I am happy that Adam is feeling comfortable enough with his success that he is not too worried about the correctness of every single public statement. There is nothing lurid about this conversation, but they are not really avoiding reality either. Progress!

If you scroll further down Olly's tweets you'll find the beginning of this whole thing........... someone took a pic in a music shop of Years & Years CD's ( along with Troy Sivan's and others) filed under a 'GAY' genre tab, and sent the pic to Olly.

As Ellen said - "Gay marriage, or as I like to call it, marriage... I don't gay park my car..."
So yeah, gay music, or as we like to call it, music...

Thanks Wal. I just got on the thread. I have been gone all day. LOL! Sounds like Adam was being a little 'frisky' today! It's nice Adam and the other guys feel comfortable playing round on twitter. Progress...slowly but surely!!

I think Adam and the others were making a tongue in cheek point, rather than one about personal preferences. Classifying music as "gay" rather than musical genre is really not progressive or inclusive. Adam makes a point of saying music is universal. Troye and Olly may make songs with more explicitly same sex lyrics, but the music is available to everyone. I mean, no one puts Beyonce's or Adele's cds in a 'hetero" bin.
