Grammys 2017 - my take
2.13.17 by Q3
I couldn't decide if I wanted to watch the Grammys or not this year. I decided to DVR the show but popped in at 10:00PM. Then after the show was over, I watched the rest of the show.
Let me start by complimenting a couple of the advertisers -- some of the highlights for me were the TV commercials like the Apple Airpod commercial (not new, released January 25, 2017).
Lil Buck & Marian Hill for Apple Music

A Google Pixel Prince commercial which was conveniently placed right after the Prince Tribute. It really was a wonderful tribute to Prince with Sampha, Deer Tick’s John McCauley, Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, Brandi Carlile and more contributed to a “Nothing Compares 2 U” cover. It was great -- and while I really enjoyed the Bruno Mars Prince Tribute, this commercial hit the right emotional chord for a tribute.

But to keep the planet in balance, not ever advertiser got it right. Target, a brand that usually hits it perfectly, just missed with their very, very long commercial -- filled with way too many big brand product placements and with a truly lame remake of an 80's
"classic." In the commercial Carly Rae Jepsen, Lil Yachty, and producer, Mike WiLL Made-It in an epic remake [well that's what Target calls it] of the ‘80s classic "It Takes Two." The music video, directed by Roman Coppola and choreographed by Mandy Moore, debuted during the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Wanna play a fun game, try to find all the products in this 3 minute tribute to buying stuff. [Many people liked this commercial -- matter of taste.]

There were some other excellent musical commercials:
Sam Smith for Starbucks
John Legend for Life Water
Frank Sinatra for Adidas
Evan Ross, Rumer Willis and more for Gap
Chicano Batman for Johnnie Walker
Alumnus Carlos Ramirez for the University of Phoenix
Ariana Grande and more for Carpool Karaoke
Man and Machine for Lexus
Taylor Swift for Believe in Music
Now, to the program. I thought it was OK but filled with strange, unintended juxtapositions. Like a powerful performance by A Tribe Called Quest, Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes and Consequence and their attack on the Muslim ban from "President Agent Orange" closing with Q-Tip shouting "resist!" several times, followed immediately by a chirpy female announcer introducing something.
No need for me to do a rundown of the show -- here's one that pretty much covers it: www.billboard.com/articles/news/grammys/7686241/grammys-2017-performances-ranked
One final note: It is truly a sign of the times when the Best New Artist (Chance the Rapper) is not signed to a records label (his choice) and has never sold an album. So far all he has done is give away his mixtapes. This genie cannot be put back into the bottle.
The Grammys were never the best or most interesting awards program. And there really was not much different this year from past years.
