Queen + Adam Lambert
8 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at American Airlines Center, 2500 Victory Ave., $780 at ticketmaster.com
One of the first times singer Adam Lambert met Brian May and Roger Taylor, performing members of Queen, was on the set of American Idol in 2009. It was the same year the former rendition of the band Queen + Paul Rogers stopped performing together. Lambert likely couldn't have met May and Taylor, the guitarist and drummer for Queen, at a better time in his career. Around this time, May had seen a video of Lambert performing "Bohemian Rhapsody" and began considering him as Rogers' replacement. The trio played a handful of shows together starting in 2011, but since 2014, they've been touring the world. While the show at American Airlines Center costs more than a pretty penny, the band never seems to disappoint, so it should be worth it. Jacob Vaughn

The Show Goes On for Queen + Adam Lambert
Brett Callwood July 22, 2019
“Let me address the big, pink elephant in the room,” Adam Lambert said during his first between-song chat with the crowd at the Forum in Inglewood on Saturday night. “I am not Freddie Mercury.”
There’s not a soul in the room that needed that information, but still, the sentiment was appreciated and reciprocated in the form of huge cheers and applause. Eight years into his run as the frontman of this most iconic of rock & roll bands, it must get tiring to have to justify one’s existence night after night. But it speaks to his humility and decency that he brings the subject up early on. Because, Lambert knows what this is. The band has said that the chances of new material from this “Queen + Adam Lambert” lineup are slim, because people just want to hear the old stuff.
They’ve tried it before, of course. Queen with Free/Bad Company man Paul Rodgers put out The Cosmos Rocks in 2008 (plus the Return of the Champions live album in 2005), and people were barely interested. Incidentally, the Queen + Paul Rodgers experiment is largely considered a failure because of Rodgers’ blues-rock stylings, but that attitude ignores some spectacular live shows.
But Lambert, who has a successful solo career which allows him to stretch his creative wings, seems content to sing the old songs with Queen. As far as he’s concerned, he’s paying tribute to this band and their incomparable singer. “There can only be one Freddie Mercury,” Lambert yells, to more hysterical cheers.
With all of that said, Lambert does a phenomenal job. A quick glance at the setlists for previous shows on this Rhapsody tour reveals that there’s little wiggle room. They have this thing rehearsed to the point of perfection. And that attention to detail allows for a spectacular theatrical experience. There are lasers (so many fucking lasers) and a big disco ball, some imaginative uses of the screens behind them, and a motorcycle for Lambert to drape himself across during “Bicycle Race” (not exactly accurate based on the lyrics, but close enough — it’s hard to drape yourself over a bicycle).

The singer enjoys himself immensely during “Killer Queen,” fanning himself and pouting like the fine dandy that he is, enunciating each word with clear relish. Each crowd fave, including the opening “Now I’m Here,” as well as “Seven Seas of Rhye,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Somebody to Love” and “Radio Ga Ga,” is treated with the reverence it deserves by Lambert.
Meanwhile, Brian May and Roger Taylor lap up every bit of the adoration bestowed upon them by this L.A. crowd. They sound reinvigorated too, as they enjoy the opportunity to wallow in some of the post-biopic afterglow. Taylor takes the mic to sing “I’m in Love with My Car” (a great rocker that took a bit of a poke in that Bohemian Rhapsody film) and, later, Bowie’s parts on “Under Pressure.” May sings “Love of My Life,” armed with just an acoustic guitar, and duets with an on-screen Mercury — one of the most emotional moments of the evening.
Other highlights include May dressed as some sort of space-robot, apparently standing on an asteroid for his “Last Horizon” solo while planets hover around him. There are some superb deep cuts — notably “In the Lap of the Gods” from the Sheer Heart Attack masterpiece, “Dragon Attack” from 1980’s The Game and “Machines (Back to Humans)” from ’84’s The Works.
Mercury is back on the screens for his famous “Ay Oh” crowd interaction, before the double whammy encores of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”
And with that, it’s all over. The band bows and exits the stage, and the crowd shuffles out, the buzz tangible. Next time Queen plays, we’ll still be talking about Freddie Mercury — that’s just the way it is. This version of the band embraces that fact and pays tribute in the most fitting way possible — by delivering the goods in spectacular fashion, every night.

Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' becomes oldest music video to break 1 billion views on YouTube
“Easy come, easy go” — that’s a phrase that has never applied to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” one of the most enduring recordings of the 20th century. The Queen classic just set a record by becoming the first music video released in the 1970s, or any time prior to the ’90s, to cross the billion-views mark on YouTube.
To commemorate the milestone, the two remaining original members of the group, Brian May and Roger Taylor, have teamed up with Universal Music and YouTube/Google for some fresh iterations of the 44-year old single and video. One is a newly digitally remastered version of the original clip, which premiered on “Top of the Pops” in England in November 1975.
That vintage video polish job is being supplemented by the promise of three new “user-generated” videos to be made for three different Queen tracks, to be collated from submissions at the YouAreTheChampions.com website.
“We are honoured that ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has just hit one billion views on YouTube,” Brian May and Roger Taylor said as part of the announcement. “We want to thank you all and celebrate with our amazing fans all around the world by creating three new music videos to our songs, all featuring you! Whether you are a musician, singer, dancer, visual artist or you just want to have some fun. Go to www.youarethechampions.com to find out more and we’ll see you on the road somewhere.” (Queen + Adam Lambert are on a long world tour that just included stops at the Forum in L.A.)
Dancers are being asked to submit their interpretations of “Don’t Stop Me Now” after watching an instructional video from Polly Bennett (who served as Rami Malik’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” movement coach). Visual artists get to offer any kind of take on lyrics or even individual words from “A Kind of Magic.” Singers and musicians aren’t being left out — the request directed at them is to reinterpret (surprise) “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The three videos resulting from this campaign will be release later in the year, according to YouTube.

Queen celebrate Bohemian Rhapsody milestone with fan-driven video campaign
By Scott Munro (Classic Rock)
As Queen’s video for Bohemian Rhapsody passes 1 billion views on YouTube, Queen release remastered version and announce You Are The Champions campaign
Queen’s video for their classic 1975 track Bohemian Rhapsody has passed the 1 billion views mark on YouTube.
It’s now the first pre-1990’s video to reach 1bn views on the platform – and Queen have celebrated the milestone by releasing a remastered, hi-def version of the promo and announced a campaign titled You Are The Champions.
Queen have teamed up with YouTube Music, Universal Music Group and Hollywood Records for the initiative, which will give fans the chance to have a starring role in three new user generated videos for a trio of the band’s best-loved songs.
Queen are looking for musicians, singers, and instrumentalists for their take on Bohemian Rhapsody, while dancers are invited to submit their own routines and interpretations for Don't Stop Me Now. Visual artists will also have the chance to design something eye-catching around a word or phrase from A Kind Of Magic’s lyrics.
Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor say: “We are honoured that Bohemian Rhapsody has just hit 1bn views on YouTube. We want to thank you all and celebrate with our amazing fans all around the world by creating three new music videos to our songs, all featuring you!
“Whether you are a musician, singer, dancer, visual artist or you just want to have some fun. Visit the You Are The Champions website to find out more and we’ll see you on the road somewhere.”
The completed videos will be uploaded later this year to the official Queen YouTube channel.
Queen and Adam Lambert are currently on their Rhapsody tour across North America, with their next show set for tomorrow night (July 23) in Dallas.
