Good Sunday morning everyone! As Superpower is playing in a loop on Spotify (on computer mute), I have been reading the morning news and linked my way to an interesting article. For some background, I like to intersperce the overwhelmingly depressing political news with fun pop culture information. Today I decided that I needed to know what the "Jeremy Renner App", which was apparently destroyed by trolls, brou-ha-ha was all about. I had been seeing it in headlines the last few days so clicked on the NYTimes story. If you want to read the story, I have linked it here JeremyBUT that is really not what I wanted to share with you. The real story for me was not about Jeremy Renner but about the way superfans of various artists and influencers interact with their fans. The above article linked to a more in-depth look at fan interactions on the internet; past, present, and future. It was a real eye-opener for me and I am not sure exactly what I think about it yet. Influencers are flocking to a surprising new kind of social mediaby Katharine Schwab04.08.19 Article LInkThere are surprising similarities to what we have here, but also other paths that hint about ways that could change if Adam were to engage fans differently. As I said, I am not sure how I feel and I don't want to speculate too long about something that may never happen, however, I don't mind entertaining the possibility and exploring my theoretical responses. Give it a read if you are inclined. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say. Really surprised the article didn't mention Amanda Palmer. She's pretty much the queen of community building with your fans and finding your own audience. She started as a street performer, then as a musician and built a community of her fans starting with email newsletters and working through a variety of platforms. Her main thing now is her Patreon account. But it definitely hasn't been painless and she's dealt with a lot of crap over the years. Read her book "The Art of Asking" as it is really interesting. Just checked her book out on Amazon and it does look interesting. Although I am more of a fiction reader, I may see if Half-Price Books has it the next time I go.

Sounds like a fan club with a monthly fee... Very clever... It does, doesn't it. But the concept of getting more personal and even individual content from Adam would be the draw. Fans now have embraced the community part of the paradigm with some success and I can't really see Adam starting something like this. He is not incredibly active on social media and while he does appreciate his fans (enough for me at least), he does not appear to want that level of personal engagement. I am not sure I would either ...

True, but think of how excited people get when he likes, retweets, or even comments on their social media posts. There is a level of fun and loyalty there that is very enticing. Apparently, Jeremy Renner ran into difficulties with contests he promoted, to the point where a troll/annoyed fan recoded content leading to disarray. It would be a fine line walked by the content provider between engagement and exploitation. rihannsu earlier provided Amanda Palmer as a reference for someone who has walked that line with success. Brian May's blog is a form of this though probably not so interactive (I have only read a couple of posts), but it does keep his fans engaged. However, these apps would lead to greater expectation because they are paid. Again not sure what I would do ...
