MTV EMAs will be a 'game changer' as Belfast sheds old image

This weekend the eyes of the world are on Belfast.
One of the biggest music awards ceremonies ever held will beam the city into hundreds of millions of homes around the globe.
Never before has the city had such an opportunity to showcase itself to so many people.
As Belfast gets ready to host the MTV EMAs — with the potential to raise £10m for the local economy — many see it as the best opportunity to shed the old image of conflict for a new one of music.
“This really does change the game,” Andrew Irvine, Belfast city centre manager said.
“It’s a massive event on a global level, so the message that this sends around the world changes perceptions about Belfast.
“Our research shows that while you and I know what Belfast is like in 2011, the perception internationally is 10 years behind reality.
“This (the EMAs) goes into 500 million homes around the world and that will communicate what Belfast 2011 is like and that’s a game changer; that changes perceptions of the city. And I would like to think we will derive a tourism benefit from that.”
And he said the MTV EMAs would only lead to more opportunities.
“The lesson from other cities, like Liverpool, is when you host something of this scale, it does put you on event managers’ radars.
“The people organising major events get to see Belfast and you put yourself in front of them.
“I would like to think that this would help us with some other stuff we’re bidding for.”
Mr Irvine said hosting Europe’s most famous awards show is only the start of a series of major events planned for Belfast, as part of a “fairly detailed event strategy”.
For city bosses it’s the kick-off for a major year of celebrations, with 120 events planned around the Titanic centenary in 2012 and the World Police and Fire Games — the third largest sports event in the world — in 2013.
“So it’s not just the EMAs and forget about it,” he said.
And as some of the world’s biggest superstars touch down in Belfast today ahead of the big show tomorrow night, tourism chiefs are already marketing the slogan ‘Belfast is rocking’.
With our own local bands like Snow Patrol on the bill and international popstars like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars performing on the night, they are hoping the MTV EMAs will showcase the city as one of Europe’s coolest and most vibrant places, with a dynamic music scene.
Susie McCullough, from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, said the local economy will directly benefit from an estimated £10m of revenue from the awards.
“So far 90 Belfast businesses have been involved in the delivery of the show, and hotels and restaurants in the city are booked to 90% capacity tonight and 100% on Sunday night,” she said.
“This is really about changing the position and profile of Belfast and Northern Ireland on the world stage.
“The show will be screened into 520 million homes, that will give 1.2 billion people the opportunity to see the event,” she added.
And with hundreds of members of the international media also descending on the city this weekend, the NITB has predicted they will generate 10 million positive news articles about Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Adam Lambert's appearance on the new Hub TV talent showcase Majors & Minors is soon upon us -- Sunday, Nov. 13, to be exact, and it looks to be a memorable visit by the American Idol alum.
The task at hand: Getting a chorus of kids ages 8 to 16 to deliver their rendition of his hit "Whataya Want From Me" and sound like a million bucks. And judging by the 30-second promo that will air during Sunday night's show, when Colbie Callait makes a group number out of her hit "Bubbly," Lambert looks impressed!
The fledgling talent show, which doesn't eliminate the future music stars of America but educates them, is a co-production of hit songwriter Evan Bogart's Boardwalk Entertainment Group and RCA Records, Lambert's label which has placed several of its artists, including perma-mentor Brandy, on the show. Other artists who appear this season include Avril Lavigne, Leona Lewis and Ryan Tedder. The winner receives a recording contract with RCA.

Usually sometime during the week, an idea comes into my head for a topic to write about for Sunday. I'm inspired by things that Adam tweets, by things happening in the fandom, by news of Adam's activities. I also shamelessly steal ideas from you guys! 8-)
This week, the topic was obvious—Adam was going to participate in the European Music Awards!!! But every time I tried to put into words what I was feeling about this Sunday, I failed. How to translate flail into something more coherent than keysmashing? After a while I realized that at least for now, it was beyond me. So for today, all I can do is put out my wishes:
For us, that our expectations, whatever they are—are met, and that we can celebrate together today and for many days to come in this next era.
For Adam—that he has the time of his life and that all the joy he gives to us comes back to him a thousand-fold.
And because I am a born-too-late hippie and a sentimental fool, I'm quoting Bob Dylan…
