BRAVO Bulgaria Magazine 18.04.2012 5 minutes with... Adam Lambert
The performer finishes sentences and tells his secrets!
1. When I was a kid... ... I loved to masquerade. 2. The best thing that anyone had ever told me... ... was 'I love you'. And it came from the heart. 3. I'm addicted to... ... ... shopping. There never will be enough clothes or songs bought on-line. 4. In the morning... ... firstly I look at my phone to check my messages & e-mails. 5. I can't live without... ... my phone! This is a real problem. Once I lost it & felt like I couldn't breath. 6. My favorite cosmetic product is... ... Maroccanoil - balsam* which I rub in my still damp hair. It smells super & gives glamour. 7. Before I get on stage... ... I take a deep breath - and once more I go to the toilet. 8. The most embarrassing moment in my life was... ... when I fell of the stage on American Music Awards 2009 - live on TV. 9. For breakfast I love to eat... ... scrambled eggs. 10. My new album Trespassing is... ... my baby! The songs tells stories of my life & they are very personal. *the word in Bulgarian is 'oil' but I'm not sure if it is appropriate in English!
“I can growl a word or two and make a change, and people want me to growl more, and I don’t like it. When I was working on Bat Out Of Hell, Jim wanted me to use that rough voice more than I wanted to. Every producer wants me to use this other rougher voice, and they all want me to use it, a little more Cocker-ish, a little more Steven Tyler, I guess. And I don’t want to use it. I want to use my Adam Lambert voice. I don’t have my Adam Lambert voice. I never did have my Adam Lambert voice, it’s just what I want to have. That’s funny. That makes me laugh. Adam Lambert, by the way, is possibly one of the three greatest singers in the entire world. I link him with Aretha, Whitney, and Adam Lambert. I couldn’t touch those three with a ten foot, or hundred foot, pole. Emotionally I can, vocally I couldn’t.”
Upon further reflection, he concludes that “Jim may have been right. I hear Bat Out Of Hell now, and I go oh maybe I should have used my rough voice there” in certain spots.
“Critics just assume that a Meat Loaf album is going to be this particular thing,” he says, even as his last two records have left the earlier Meat Loaf blueprint behind. “Hang Cool Teddy Bear was a true character driven record, and it was one character by the name of Patrick. And Hell In A Handbasket is not character driven. If it’s character driven, it’s my character.”
The new tour, aptly titled Mad Mad World, kicks off in June in Austin, Texas and runs through August.
Adam Lambert @adamlambert Just caught up on idol from the other night. @krisallen you sounded flawless!! Great performance man! 12:56 AM - 21 Apr 12 via Twitter for iPhone · Details
Sometimes Adam amazes me and humbles me. Yes, he is just a man. He is prone to all the achievements and foibles of any of us. But, at the same time he seems like such an old and wise soul.
While we are busy tallying up "Adam mentions" in the media, charts, polls, and rankings, and comparing them to other Idols, to KA, to Katy Perry, to Gaga etc, Adam graciously compliments other performers on their accomplishments. While we shake our heads at other performers, thinking how much more talented and deserving Adam is and resenting that the world has not realized how great Adam is, he is enjoying and appreciating the work of others. Adam knows that the success of others in no way diminishes what he is doing. It is not a case of "either/or." He can lift others up without it taking away from him. The more performers who succeed, the happier he is. He has a generous, encouraging spirit.
He is also grateful for what he has. He works hard, plays hard, and appreciates the opportunities he has and the support of his fans.
As we impatiently await the PR for his newest single and his almost released album, we sometimes get worried, resentful, and even petty. Adam does not. Somehow, he retains all of his enthusiasm, positivity and focus. When I start to angst or carp and complain, I need to stop and say "WWAD?" What would Adam do? ILHSFM.
We’re one day closer, Glamberts. After nearly three years and more delays than we would have liked, Adam Lambert’s sophomore album, Trespassing, will be released on May 15. Taking control of a majority of the writing duties, Lambert collaborated with some of pop’s biggest names (Pharrell Williams, Bruno Mars, Dr. Luke, Bonnie McKee) to capture a sound that works well with his newfound funkier sensibility. Popdust caught up with The Glam One, who spoke about the recording process, the perfect activities to accompany his new tracks (hint: crying and partying both make the cut) and which songs we need to request at our local karaoke bar ASAP. Y’know, all the important stuff.
POPDUST: Complete this sentence: Listening to my new album will make people feel ___: ADAM LAMBERT: Well, depending on what part of the album they’re listening to, it will either make them feel fierce and liberated, or kind of sad—in a cathartic, commiserating way.
What’s the meaning behind the album title? “Trespassing” is one of the tracks that I co-wrote with Pharrell Williams, and after we finished it I realized it was basically a mission statement for what I’m about right now, as an artist, a musician and a person. It’s about breaking down barriers and rebelliously marching forward.
What activity should people engage in while listening to Trespassing? The first half of the album is pretty up-beat and dance-oriented so I picture people out at parties, or maybe on the treadmill or driving. The second half of the album gets much darker and more emotional, so I can see people sitting quietly and thinking to it.
Who were you listening to while making the record? I’m always listening to what’s current—Top 40 for the most part. One of the things we explored on this album was a funkier sensibility. I was really diving into Prince and Rufus and Michael Jackson, some of his earlier stuff, and then [into] kind of a ’90s world [with] George Michael and later Michael Jackson. There’s a little Nine Inch Nails energy in there, too.
How many times have you listened to your own album? You don’t want to know. You don’t want to know. [Laughs] When I get involved in the project, I’m in and down the rabbit hole. I’ve been quite obsessed.
Are there any songs that your exes will think are about them? Probably. [Laughs.]
Do you have a favorite lyric from the record? There’s a lyric in “Underneath” that goes: “Welcome to my world of truth / I don’t want to hide anything from you.” It’s pretty straight ahead but that sums up the darker material: it’s very revealing. And then “Trespassing” has a lot of lyrics like, “Make their faces crack / There’s no turning back.” I think that’s part of that mission statement; I’m hear to open your mind and open your eyes.
How much of the album is auto-tuned? I only use it here and there to enhance. I definitely don’t use it as much as some people.
Do you have a favorite button on the mixing board? I don’t know what the buttons do! [Laughs] But I like delay on my vocals, I like when vocals are echoey.
What song from the album should we use as our go-to karaoke song? I think “Never Close Our Eyes” is going to be a great karaoke song. That’s karaoke gold right there.
While you were recording, how many times did you hear people mention Adele? When I was working on this album she was tearing up the charts and it was kind of like, “Well, that’s the exception to the rule.” [But] there is no rule, and she taught everybody that. People in the industry always want to predict the trends, predict what’s going to work or not work, and tell you what you have to do. She relied on a great song and a great voice, so there you go.
Is there a “Someone Like You” among the tracks? There’s probably something on there for a good cry. “Underneath” has pretty powerful lyrics, and “Outlaws of Love” as well.
So you’re in favor of a good cry? Yeah, I love a good cry.
Adam Lambert at Upright Cabaret: I Can't Make You Love Me
Known for: American Idol, First Openly Gay Pop Artist to launch on a major label
Why he’s a JILF: Adam moved to California at a very young age, and was raised in his mother’s Jewish religion. His musical career began at the age of 9, performing in school plays and choirs. His passion for performing encouraged Adam to move to L.A instead of attending college, landing him his first job at the age of 19 on a cruise ship. Upon his return, he started landing roles in professional theatre productions including Hair, Brigadoon, and Wicked. Adam became an international success with American Idol. Although he didn’t win, Adam went on to become one of the most successful contestants in the shows history. Look out for Adam’s second studio album, Trespassing, coming out on May 15th.

After * Idol Four million singles and more than a million albums sold make this Season No. 8 finisher one of Idols' winningest losers.
From the moment he performed "Bohemian Rhapsody" as his Idol audition, it was clear Adam Lambert was made to emote. And get people out of their seats: After his rendition of "The Tracks Of My Tears", none other than Smokey Robinson, the song's lead singer and an Idol mentor, stood and applauded, and Lambert's number got a standing-O even from Savage Simon, who earlier dissed the man-in-black-eyeliner's version of "Ring of Fire" as "indulgent rubbish". Another class moment: When the heavily favored Lambert came in second, and winner Kris Allen told the audience, "Adam deaserved this". His post-Idol career has combined concerts and controversy: Viewers protested loudly when Lambert, during 2009 American Music Awards, seemed to simulate oral sex with a band member. He told Ellen Degeneres that he "maybe went a little bit too far", he said. "I am gay. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that." tl.gd/grtgv6 ·
On Wednesday’s show, the contestants will perform with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, while on Thursday’s show, the Queen Extravaganza will perform along with pop superstar Katy Perry and season 10 alum Stefano Langone.
This marks the second time Idol has chosen a Queen theme. During season 5, the Top 8 was also joined by Brian May and Roger Taylor. Idol fans may recall winner Taylor Hicks, who was also in the audience on Thursday night, nailing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” while Ace Young struggled a bit with the anthemic “We Will Rock You.” During season 8, Queen also performed at the finale, joining Kris Allen and Adam Lambert for “We Are the Champions.”
Lambert has perhaps had the deepest affiliation with the British band, which lost frontman Freddie Mercury to complications from AIDS in 1991. Most recently, he joined May and Taylor for a medley of Queen songs at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards. Lambert was also due to perform with the band at England’s Sonisphere festival at Knebworth on July 7, but that date was canceled.
It was later announced that Queen and Lambert will play two shows at London’s Hammersmith Apollo July 11 and 12 with another appearance scheduled for June 30 at Moscow's Olympic Stadium. (Several show insiders tell THR that Lambert is not expected to appear on next week's show, but as with all things Idol, you never know...)
In a case of ultimate Idol synergy, Katy Perry, who shares management with Lambert, is herself a massive Queen fan and dressed as Freddie Mercury for her 24th birthday in 2008. In September of last year, the singer also posted a Youtube clip of herself singing "Happy Birthday" to the late rocker on what would have been his 65th birthday.
