Why can't this performance be celebrated for what it was - a delightful, surprise impromptu duet between two artists who clearly enjoyed performing together. And equally enjoyed by the live audience. Doesn't seem fair to pile on Gaga and pick her to pieces because some feel she wasn't in perfect voice on a Queen+Adam stage. I think the excitement of her appearance more than made up for any perceived imperfections in her performance. I loved them together and clearly Adam loved it. That's good enough for me.

Of course Adam is leading - Gaga is their guest. They're a well-oiled machine by now, like when Adam did the count 1-2. I don't think Gaga was horrible - no, she's no Adam Lambert (hehe), but it's his stage and it would have been very surprising to me if she were able to outperform him on his turf - she can't just come into an act she didn't rehearse and take over - I don't know any performer who could do that. And it wasn't the point, either - I thought it was a fun little one-off. If they were to record a real duet, I'm sure that would be really stunning, though. I don't think Gaga was horrible either. It looked like they both had a lot of fun and that means a lot - and the audience had a surprise performance to add to their night's memories. Concerts are not just about vocal perfection - they are about a wonderful memorable experience and this was. I hope it does go viral. That can only be win-win for Gaga AND Adam.

He wasn't just singing the song beautifully, he gave it an emotional arc that was unexpected and highlighted the yearning and despair of the song. You could argue that the original version with it's flat monotone delivery is a better example of depression and that may be true but Adam sang of the pathos behind that depression, he made us feel the confusion and longing. To do that, he used everything at his command - soft blue lighting, smoke to blur out detail, pale clothing, a single spotlight on sad seated figure, choreography which pretty much comprised standing and lifting the song to another place, his cadence and highlighting of particular phrases in the song, an ethereal clear tone to his voice that removed a connection to the ground, and although I don't think the last note miss was intentional, it did lend to the poignancy of that final plea for understanding and was ultimately human and perfect. So who else on Idol had ever done that before? The question is rhetorical. LindaG23 Very well said.!! I agree with all the above explanations of why MW touched so many. But I love the above description of the angst of the lyrics matched perfectly with the delivery and setting. For me, it was breathtaking and still is. YES.YES.YES.

OK, I have a stupid question, so bear with me - What was SO very extraordinary about the Mad World performance? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't watch American Idol (I only saw Adam's performances on youtube), so I don't get why Mad World was so "Idol-changing"... can someone explain it to me - from the performance standpoint, what exactly was the 1st time ever, apart from Adam changing up the song? was it his staging, his use of lights? had that never been done before, or what? I had watched Idol and had seen and heard Adam, but for the first time I REALLY SAW Adam and I realized that he is really excellent singer. His entire presentation is polished to perfection from start to finish. He does not sing too over dramatic, but minimum level of intervention brings up an excellent song and excellent singing voice. I was at one time sold, and I fell in love to Adam at that moment! His performance was both raw and subtle at the same time. It still has the same deep emotional impact on me today as it did that night - chills and choked up - amazing forever performance from deep within the soul of this beautiful man.

After all this time and playing Mad World a kazillion times, I have never heard a missed note at the end. I have always thought, and still do, that the last note is perfect for that performance. It is so breathtakingly deep and wells up from his very soul. My impression anyway. Seems it touched critical Simon too. Still my favorite Adam performance of all time.

I'm no good at playing these games, but IMO, his beautiful, masterful, stunning Mad World should always and forever be #1, no matter what else he ever sings in his lifetime.
