ABC's treatment of Adam v. Brown seems strange and inconsistent indeed. However, the blogs and articles highlighting this point have conveniently forgotten/ignored that there was more to Adam's performance that people objected to than the male-male kiss (simulated oral sex, trolley stop). While there were other performances on the AMA that were equally sexual, I don't think it is appropriate for people to argue that Adam's ban from ABC was just because of the kiss. That's just plain inaccurate. Are they "conveniently" forgetting this to give more credence to their argument? simply put... yes and I made this argument the other day and was shot down.

I'm pretty sure the "trolley stop" move was preapproved by ABC. Why else would that woman's costume have a convenient ring pull on the crotch? I also recall that right after the performance, there was far more talk about the kiss--by both pro- and anti-Adam forces--than about the simulated oral sex move. The kiss has always gotten more attention. So when people talk about it more now, it's because people talked about it more then. Personally, I always thought it was ridiculous to say "simulated oral sex move" anyway. Nobody would have oral sex if that was all there was to it. Sure, that's what it was intended to suggest, but it was fleeting and fully-clothed, so it wasn't all that salacious. I'm with Adam, who said several times afterward he was stunned that people made such a big deal out of it. The bottom line is still that Adam's behavior in that performance was far less offensive than Chris Brown's behavior, and Adam was punished while Brown is rewarded. There can't be any justification for that. As far as I'm concerned, GMA owes Adam an appearance and an apology. But I ain't holding my breath. I think you're absolutely right, holst, to point out the inaccuracy. And of course when you do so you're not criticizing Adam's actions in the least--only the reporting. But Murly, ITA with you're analysis, especially the bit I bolded, which has always driven me batty ( simulated oral sex--you're doing it wrong) LOL. I don't really know which specific moves ABC had pre-approved and which they hadn't, but while Adam was always sure to take that on his shoulders (what a guy!) it always struck me as a strange kind of nit-picking. What ABC clearly approved was a racy, s&m-themed, crazy-costumed, sexually-assertive performance by a powerful gay man. And I've always believed that that was precisely what offended a small number of sheltered, conservative viewers, and kinda freaked out a rather larger number of viewers, who then pinned it on specific moves like--gasp!--The Kiss!--and--gasp!--The Simulated Oral Sex!!!--which during the actual performance went by in a split second on a wide view and were barely noticeable in all the costuming crazy. However, I think it is significant and in some ways accurate that The Kiss has become a kind of shorthand for what got Adam in trouble that night. For one thing, it is not irrelevant that that is what our hyped up, sexually paranoid media latched on to that night. For another, I firmly believe that if Adam had been a straight man, far fewer people would have freaked, none of this would have been so controversial, and he would not have been banned from GMA the morning after. In that sense, The Kiss, because it is the symbol for the "orientation" of the performance and the performer, is in fact a very accurate moment to use to represent why Adam was punished for his behavior. One thing I kind of wish is that more reporters would make the point that when Adam was axed from GMA for "loving not wisely but too well," it was recently convicted woman-beater CB who was originally chosen in the last minute to fill his slot. Although in the end CB came on a couple of weeks later instead, that little fact says a lot about the network/show's values, and also makes the Adam link in this new series of stories a little more relevant. In the end, though, this story is not really about either of them--they're just useful figure heads for two aspects of our pop-culture, sex and violence, that ABC and much of the country seems to relatively value in completely fucked up and up-side-down ways. Of course Adam, sexayyy as he is, is about much more than sex, as I assume CB is about much more than violence, but I don't resent, for the moment, the role that's been assigned to him. I hope, as Adam said post AMAs, that this begins a much needed conversation... OH, and Hoopla--you're a ray of sunshine this morning, girl! Glad you liked the "favorite color" vid I posted on p. 1. Check it out, folks, it really is a classy song/peformance/remix. MWP- I don't think I've ever told you this, but I love it when you use words.

When I jotted off a letter to ABC I described Adam's antics as kissing a band member and simulating a sex act. For me, violence is still worse than what Adam did at the AMA's at a time when all children should have been in bed. ABC stinks as a role model for good TV and good executive decisions regarding their network. I am going to watch ABC as little as possible. There is only one show I like on that network, and I don't know if I can give it up. I will try, however. I am that upset over their treatment of Adam.

Chris Brown has not committed an act of violence on live television though. Not that what he has done is right but there is a very clear difference between what has been broadcast to millions of viewers and what took place in the privacy of a car (or dressing room). I agree that ABC are hypocritical assholes for cancelling Adam and then welcoming someone like CB with open arms but the situations are completely different IMO. Would it be wrong of GMA/ABC to have Mel Gibson on to promote his next film? He's a known racist and woman beater. How about Sean Connery? Again, abusive to women. How about Paris Hilton? She's been arrested several times for drugs and her DUI. Where and when does the line get drawn as to who we deem appropriate and who gets to decide?

Well, for me, an act of real violence will always be a billion times worse than an act of simulated sex, no matter how many people did or did not witness it. *shrug*
