But I did get kohlrabi! What the hell is it? flowergirl and jablea, thanks for all the great butternut squash ideas!!! chapf -- I found some kohlrabi recipes! And I had a great salad last night with three different kinds of greens. If any of you ever get the chance to do this "farm to work" thing it is really fun to get all the different surprise veggies. I am learning a lot and it makes eating better, fresher food fun. And I don't think it really costs any more than it would to buy all this stuff at the grocery store.

Saturday - The Swimming Pool Walk
I should like swimming but for all the time I've spent in pools I'm not real thrilled with it. My knees hurt on pretty much every type of stroke, who really wants to get their hair wet, and my neck kills me from keeping the hair out of the water.
But I'm good at water play, that and soaking in the hot pool.
Because the water makes us lighter there is much less load on your limbs and you can pretend you are on the moon. Take long high strides, or use the resistance of the water to do a fast as you can whirliagig. High knees, backwards, laps on just your toes, grapevines, squat walks.
Need to work out your upper body and stomach muscles? Do leg tuck sweeps. On your belly bring knees up, underneath, thru and push you feet out in front. Do the same thing in reverse.

Well I just have to post now!
I was away still when the first official weigh in happened but I did weigh myself on the hump day, second week. What I am doing different this time is I am going to aquafit classes M/W/F mornings for an hour....I soooooo do not want to get out doing that but once I am there it is fun, somewhat, if the water is not too cold. I feel like it is making a difference though and as far as I can tell from my very old, decrepit scale, I have lost around 4 pounds over the last 2 weeks. Yeah.....
Downside....as we 'speak' I have an Infrared lamp focused on my neck and shoulders to speed muscle healing as I roundly ache there...much of it from keeping my head and hair out of the water!!....my own damn vain self's fault!
chappy...love your smiley's....always funny and topical...

Sunday - The Neck Reliever Stretch
Oh my poor aching neck! Well not anymore. I think I have found the secret formula and I'll share with you (Mszue this is for you) what I've learned that 20 trips to the chiropractor and quite a bit of physical therapy over the last three years couldn't.
--- Stand or sit with back straight.
Put right arm behind back, reach over the top of your head with your left arm, fingers touching your ear, and pull your head toward your left shoulder. Count to 30. Switch sides.
Put right arm behind back, reach over the top of your head with your left arm, but this time your fingers will be between your ear and the center of the back of your head. Pull your head toward your left knee. Count to 30. Switch sides.
Both hands behind head, pull head toward feet. Count to 15.
ETA: Don't resist the pull, Don't slump, Don't pull too hard. Your head is heavy enough to provide a lot of the force.
===
This method is in a few books but the ones I've seen have you sitting on your non-pulling arm. The last couple of months I've been having trouble sleeping, again, because of my neck, thinking of going back to the chiropractor because something had worked last time but I couldn't quite remember what since I didn't think things had gone well and I didn't go to my last visit. But what I did remember is that right after that time I had read about this method and had done it for several weeks and then my neck didn't hurt for a year and I forgot all about it. Well I remembered the method this time and I've been sitting on my hand and even holding onto the underside of the chair I was sitting on to get that muscle stretch at the same time I was pulling. No improvement this time and I've been trying all month. And then the lightbulb went off and I tried it with my arm behind my back. Wow! I didn't realize that anything had happened until the next night when it hit me that my neck no longer hurt and I didn't have to bunch up the pillow this way and that it had even been good the first night after the exercise.
ETA: One of the things I was doing in bed which was helping and gave me the idea for the upright version was to put my upper arm behind my back while laying on my side. It didn't give me the full stretch but it helped unkink me a bit.

Just one question on this method. Do you relax your neck muscles as you are pulling or do you tense them like you are resisting the pull? For me I Relax them. Some of the physical therapy had me resist in a simple head turn but it was while trying to return to the natural position and light enough resistance that you made progress. It was pushing against resistance not resisting a pull. Also my physical therapy was into repetitions more than holding. For me it seems to be that stretching on the opposite side of the pull that seems to do the trick. This particular stretch is more like trigger point therapy because of the long count. Always with your neck move slowly, keep your chin pulled back (ie don't jut your jaw out), your ears aligned with your shoulders (don't slump), don't push/pull it past where it wants to go, and carefully return to normal posture.

Wow Jablea
Can I ever feel that! I actually could not make it to the full 30 sec with the left hand....about 24 and I stopped....but it certainly feels better now. I will keep up with that periodically as it pulls at all the areas I have issues with [other than the plantar facitis] lol. It pulls right down into the shoulder blades with the angle one...
NOW....I have been struggling with the plantar facitis for years...trying to knuckle massage the tendon into submission is somewhat effective but simply too painful most of the time....excruciating. I wear orthodics some of the time...but my problem is flat feet and when something is trying to support an arch you don't have, it ends up feeling like you are walking on a steel ball...and massaging that tendon *see massage comment earlier. sigh. I try stretching the tendon in the am....helps first thing walk of shame to the bathroom but not much for the rest of the day...ditto the expensive 'splint' which just utterly destroys any chance of a solid sleep. I live alone so can't have someone 'tape' me and can't do it myself...I have tried.
If there is something I haven't thought of...bring it on. The sore feet really impact everything you do....people are always walking around here and look rather disdainfully at you when you drive short distances but I don't think they fully 'get' what this condition does to that ability. Hence the swimming..... My work involves standing so that has to be manoeuvred so I never do more than 2 people in a row. I change shoes constantly.... sigh sigh sigh.....pity part happening here.....

mszueI feel your pain. Try Athletics Plantar Fasciitis Arch Supports by Pro-Tec. It cured my husband's and my Plantar Fasciitis. We both have flat feet and it caused no discomfort to wear. The supports cost around $20 (sold as a pair). You can get from Road Runner Sports , REI and Amazon.com.

I did try and wrap with a tensure bandage to achieve much the same thing but it is too bulky. When I asked after something like this at our local sports place the fellow looked blank and I gave up. I am off to amazon right now!! hugs Yeah...ordered, along with a couple of other supports I was unaware of. I had to use ebay tho as amazon.com would not ship to Canada and amazon.ca did not carry...sheesh....thank goodness from ebay!!
