I like this. Kaleidoscope, like changing perspectives... creating illusion... colouring the world... focusing on the pretty... Good one, Murly!!! Actually, "Good one, Adam!" He really did come up with it first. All I did was remember it! Except I think Adam said Chameleon!

There must be a disconnect between TPTB and what actually goes on at the station/public level. The DJs or marketers who run all these contests seem to know that Adam generates hits all day long, so it would seem a few actual radio plays would not be a waste of their time... It will be really interesting to see what happens to radio vs. online in the next year or so. I'm not cheering for radio. ETA: Meant to attach this to Q3's post above. There really is no disconnect on radio programming -- at least not at CBS or Clear Channel who I have worked with in the past so I know how they operate -- the GMs and PDs get the online data and care about it. BUT radio station management (GMs, MDs and PDs) and radio programming consultants are smart enough to know that fans voting in only polls do not equal broadcast listeners. And with Arbitron's people meters, they have so much listener data that they know what people listen to and what makes people switch stations. The link I posted was to Q104 Cleveland (CBS' Hot AC station) -- Cleveland is a PPM market, so they do not guess about who is listening. They love Adam, and added some of his singles. They played BTIKM and NCOE, and more importantly promoted the album online and broadcast an interview with Adam pre-release. IMO the music on Trespassing is not a great fit for the Cleveland market -- WWFM was perfect for Cleveland. [Music from Trespassing did get a lot of airplay in Akron-Canton which is 38 miles south of Cleveland. My market.] Cleveland's top stations are are mostly Clear Channel and CBS, and it is not a pop music market. The mainstream Top 40 station is #10 here -- lower that a Rock station. Basically, the white audience (73%) splits between Classics, Country and AC/Hot AC/Adult Hits. The black audience (20%) Urban AC and Urban (Radio One has this segment). Here are the ratings for Feb 13: Station | Format | Owner | Rating | WMJI-FM | Classic Hits | Clear Channel | 10.7 | WGAR-FM | Country | Clear Channel | 9 | WZAK-FM | Urban AC | Radio One | 7.8 | WHLK-FM | Adult Hits | Clear Channel | 6.9 | WDOK-FM | AC | CBS Radio | 6 | WQAL-FM | Hot AC | CBS Radio | 5.9 | WNCX-FM | Classic Rock | CBS Radio | 5.6 | WENZ-FM | Urban | Radio One | 5.4 | WMMS-FM | Rock | Clear Channel | 5 | WAKS-FM | Top 40/M | Clear Channel | 4.8 | WTAM-AM | Talk | Clear Channel | 4.7 |
US broadcast radio is local and micro-programmed within market. The way they manage programming varies by network, hub, format, and even market. But one thing is pretty consistent, online is a meaningful revenue source and all well run stations pay attention to driving online traffic.

Love him. Must be soothing to the soul to see that you are not forgotten, just because of recent events. And very nice attention to him from the Finnish fans too, who got him into that spot. Nice

Yes, he did say "chameleon". But had he reflected on it further (lol) I'm sure he'd agree that Kaliedoscope is even better.
