Thank you for sharing this! Yes, I very much agree with you. That is why I included "cavalier" (maybe there is a better word) when describing the use of these gestures/words. They are losing meaning with overuse, I think. And it very often not called for. When those situations arise, when that is what is needed at the moment, I get it. But to make it part of our everyday go to response will not improve our society. This particular campaign is referred to the Friend Movement. I guess it really caught me off guard to see this visual and the creator's explanation. Like marchhare said, this gesture does not evoke friendship. I wish I could supply a universal reaction that one could use against bullies. I know both of my kids faced bullying and one way they dealt with it was by surrounding themselves with certain friends. I was hoping that is what this movement was promoting...not the in your face fuck off. I imagine there is more to this program than what I am getting from the pictures posted today. I hope we get to see more Adam! It's a bit of both. Friends first, but if that doesn't work, then well, fuck em. And frankly, sometimes that is exactly what you have to say, and it's good to let kids know that it is okay to do so. It's also a matter that kids need to know, when other, more passive means fail, that it is okay to put your foot down. Delurking with a mini personal story: I was never bullied in any significant way growing up, aside from the usual bullshit that all but the very luckiest kids go through in school. I was a pretty fortunate kid all round. But I do remember the stretch of about a week or so, when I was quite little, maybe around 9 years old, when the an older neighborhood kid and a buddy of his decided it would be hilarious to give the little girls next door a hard time for a while, in a way that I now recognize as bullying. One afternoon the buddy came over to where I was playing in the front yard, and started picking on me, and when I stood up he came right up against me and stood on my foot with all his weight so that I couldn't get away. It really freaked me out and upset me and made me feel powerless and scared. That evening I told my dad about what had happened. I'll never forget what he said to me. He looked me straight in the eyes and said: "The next time he does that, knee him in the balls, HARD." I actually still get a little shiver typing that because as a sheltered little girl who'd practically never heard the word "balls" used in that context before, though I knew what it meant, it totally shocked me to hear it coming from my dad. I think I probably turned bright red--I couldn't believe he'd said that to me. But you know what? It really helped. It acknowledged the shittiness of the situation. It sugarcoated nothing. It taught me that I wasn't the only one with vulnerabilities. It made me feel powerful, with a righteous anger, almost grown up, like I could recognize right from wrong in the world and could control my life. It was really great advice--great enough to stick with me all these years later, an important lesson learned, even though those boys grew bored with their game and I never got to test out the strategy. But I kept it in my back pocket, a secret weapon, should I need it. I agree that the "F-word/fuck off/Friends" message of this campaign is a little garbled, but the posters--I think they're great, and absolutely right--sometimes you just need to knee the assholes in the balls, HARD. We all know what a sweetheart Adam is--how he lightens our lives, as Lorraine said, with his happiness and the positive nature he radiates--but we also know him enough to recognize this part of him as well: he is a tough, confident kid, amply equipped to stand up for himself (and others)--the farthest thing from a pushover. That is a huge part of his appeal--do not fuck with the man, or let your balls suffer the consequence, lol.
