Mt. Carmel HS Airbands 2000
"...the lead character for the "War" section, is Adam Lambert from American Idol Season 8! I knew there was something special about this performance every time I watched it, and this just adds to it!
The theme for this airband was Raid, yea that stuff you use to kill bugs and roaches. The opening set of dancers represent the bugs, while the girls are going to war to kill them.
This is a sick performance all around, the lead dancer (Adam) doing the "War" section is great fun to watch. He looks like he is dancing in fast forward, it's wild!
Props to MCHS and Rancho Penasquitos for pumping out all kinds of talent! c/o '99!!" Adam at 1:50 in "War"
Quote from YouTube description:
Putting A Show Together
"...there was also a thing that they did in high school called Air Bands. It’s a big deal in San Diego and it’s almost like a staged music video. Everybody lip syncs but it’s like a performance. It’s hard to explain. It’s like a choreographed staged costume concert. You know, if you look at Janet Jackson or Madonna or Michael Jackson, their concerts are really stylized. And it was like kids taking music and creating medleys and costuming and building sets and creating a storyline through them. It was this big competition in San Diego and I got really involved in that in high school and I look back now and realize there was so much that went into it and I got so passionate about it that I think that kind of mentality of putting together a show from start to finish is definitely going to come in handy in the future. It did on 'Idol,' [the idea that] I had to put a number together." Adam Lambert LA Times The Ultimate Interview Part 1

At about 16 (1998), I auditioned for the Starlight Theatre, which is an outdoor theater company down in Balboa Park. It’s a semi-professional thing; we got paid a little bit but it wasn’t union. We would literally have to freeze for planes going over because it’s right in the path of the San Diego airport. So there were little stoplights in the orchestra pit and if a plane was coming, it would go yellow and red and you would freeze. It was crazy. I was in the ensemble for both “Hello, Dolly!” and “Camelot”.
...then the next summer (1999), I did shows at Moonlight Amphitheatre, in Vista up in North County. I did “The Music Man” and “Grease” and I played Captain Hook in “Peter Pan.”
latimesblogs.latimes.com/americanidoltracker/2009/08/adam-lambert-the-ultimate-interview-part-1.html Director/choreography Ray Limon, co-founder of LimonCarr Productions in Tustin, also directed Adam, and never quite forgot him from his days performing at Moonlight Stage Productions.
“He was a great kid when he did ‘Grease,’” recalls Limon. “He always had that voice. One year, when we were doing our annual fundraiser, ‘Broadway at the Moonlight,’ spotlighting all the former Moonlight performers who’d gone on to Equity and Broadway, we added him into the mix. He was the youngest performer we’d ever had in the production. He was just in high school then. And ‘Chess’ was another very adult show he appeared in. It was very impressive for him to be cast. He had the lead song, ‘Pity the Child.’ I’d love to hear him sing that now.”
Limon is about to direct “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the Welk Theatre in Escondido, for which he recently auditioned 300 actor/singers.
“As talented as they were,” says Limon, “Adam’s talent is way beyond that. He’s like the little cartoon character, Vavoom, the little tiny guy who goes up to the mountains and hits a note and the mountains crumble."

The Summer Season was the most successful ever with audiences numbering 53,310 and ticket sales of $711,905.71. The Vista City Council designated $700,000 in State Park Grant funds to be set aside for a future stage-house. Maureen Macdonald hired as Executive Director of The Vista Foundation. The Broadway at the Moonlight Gala was a 1940s Big Band event, Swingtime G.I. Jive. 1200 people attended and the event raised $48,000.

Summer 2000 Youth Theater: Peter Pan (Musical) Captain Hook Moonlight Amphitheatre Vista CA

Kathy Brombacher, Moonlight's producing artistic director, remembers Lambert's upbeat personality and exceptional voice.
"He is bright, friendly, funny, down to earth and grounded," Brombacher said. "Despite his talent, he doesn't have an inflated head, and he's so articulate and professional in the way he conducts himself."
Brombacher said Lambert's flamboyant stage personality was already developing in his teens, particularly in the role of, what else, the flamboyant pirate Captain Hook.
"He was an adventuresome performer as Captain Hook," she said. "He was always out there for the journey. He wanted to be different and put his own stamp on it -- and he did."
