When I cannot answer a music theory question, I turn to my professional musician sister. I sent her a YT of STL (didn't happen to mention the name of the song in my email) and asked her if it was in 3/4, 6/8 or 12/8 time. Her response? Definitely 12/8. Now, here is the most interesting part. She gave me the answer without watching the YT, or even knowing which Queen song I was referring to. She went to the Chicago show with me, so she sorta knew the set list. She has a passing familiarity with the big Queen hits. That was enough for her to figure out which song it was by just my simple question. And to sing it back while she explained to me WHY it was 12/8 time.
That's the mind of a life-long, passionate, studied, talented musician. It is fascinating to witness. This is why, knowing her, I say that there are many, many highly talented musicians out there that Adam could get for his band if he so chose.
Another interesting observation --- Just prior to asking about STL, we had been discussing a family member with serious health problems and a troubling prognosis. Pretty depressing stuff. When I switched to this topic, she immediately brightened, her speech got animated, her energy went up, she started smiling and laughing, and got completely into the music discussion. She just LIVES for music and performing. She takes other things in life seriously, she cares about them, but her obsession and first love will always be music. It's what makes her truly come alive. Sound like another musician we all know and love?
