OT, but Adam once had an Idol contract: www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/american-idol-winner-files-bold-767088?utm_source=twitter Excerpt: Phillip Phillips says he's been "manipulated" and in a move with huge implications, he is seeking to void his recording, management and merchandising deals with 19 Entertainment. On January 22, Phillips lodged a bombshell petition with the California Labor Commissioner that asserts that Idol producer 19 Entertainment and its affiliated companies have "manipulated" him into accepting jobs since he hit it big. In a filing that reveals some of Phillips' post-show tribulations including being forced to perform for free for one of Idol sponsors and not even knowing the title of his last album before it was announced publicly, the star singer is seeking to void his various agreements with 19, said by the star's lawyer to be "oppressive, fatally conflicted."- break - But if Phillips is successful in voiding his deals as a violation of the TAA, the ramifications would be huge — potentially impacting other successful competitors on Idol as well as maybe other reality TV competition shows. The adjudication of TAA disputes also tends to be a very, very slow process with rulings often happening many years after the initial filing of a petition. The result of the creeping pace could put a number of deals in the purgatory of legal limbo, undoubtedly a concern as Idol and other shows move forward. It will be interesting to see what happens, and what, if any, impact this will have on Idol in the short term. ETA: Would love to poll other folks who had Idol contracts and get their POV on this. Are they secretly cheering Phillips, or are they thinking that he just shot himself in the foot?

I sure hope Adam never has a plagarism controversy...but life is long... and lots of writers participate in the development of his songs...as he loves to collaborate. The writer of the link below, noted the plagarism issue, wrote his article, then up-dated it months later when the QUIET settlement was made. The writer goes on to say it was a probably an honest mistake. WHAT??? He had me sold, then he backtracks. LOL!The part of the article that sold me, was the outline of the two songs in music score format, note by note how whole passages were identical with the Tom Petty song. Intentional not intentional... becomes personal opinion. My view...They settled to avoid publicity. If they had a leg to stand on they would not have give up a million dollars, and future roylaities (25%) to Tom and his co-writer. medium.com/@edrex_/did-sam-smith-steal-stay-with-me-from-tom-petty-d660968268dfNow onto a wonderful concert!

Adam used his very shrewd lawyers to get him out of his Idol contracts....quietly and by the book. That said, it took a lot of time (and probably money - to pay said lawyers if nothing else). I'm sure that there will be plenty of speculation and discussion on mjsbigblog. To see the issues, click on this link. Puts on mod hat: If peeps wish to talk about Adam's Idol contract (including why he was allowed to leave), that can indeed be done here on the News thread. If you want to talk specifically about Philips Philips contract, that convo is probably better done elsewhere (like mj's).

I think the only part of the 19 contract that required negotiating was his exit from the contract with RCA. I didn't mean to start an inappropriate discussion by posting this article (sorry!), I just thought it was interesting that for many years people have spoken and written about how onerous the Idol contracts are, and one of the contestants finally decided to challenge his contract. I think contestants just tend to soldier on and then move on to other companies once their deals expire. I think Adam's deal had better terms than Phillip's; I believe that the contracts were revised starting with S10, with terms even less favorable to the contestants. ETA: Just remembered that Phillips' recording label is Interscope/UMG, not RCA/Sony. So his contract may be even less lucrative than the Sony era.

Oh, your post wasn't inappropriate, bb! Idol contracts are indeed news today. No problem! I just wanted to make sure we kept any Idol contract discussions primarily focused on ADAM and didn't go overboard on discussing Philip Philips or other Idol contestants (although -yep- they can be brought up in context). Just trying to keep things reasonable.

Iridium...I think you are on target. The previous winners including Adam's year had much better deals. Who knows what deals the runner- ups had. Perhaps their contracts were even shorter than the winners. Posters more in the know than me have shared these last winners are under the thumb and not able to make nearly the same money.
Was the closure of his contracts for merchandise etc .... not celebrated with Adam having a condo party...sharing a big bottle of expensive champagne, with Sauli/Terrance et al? I do not think any legal battles were necessary. The music contract was still in place.
I know ....Q3 knows which contracts were over before he negotiated out of his music contract.

That said, as I recall, Adam definitely got one of the sweeter Idol contract deals (compared to what came afterwards).
Someone like Q3 or mys*&@^#r probably know a lot more details about the various Idol contracts than I do, but I know the payout went down later and the overall conditions may have changed as well.
THAT said, I don't know how much was due to the overall state of the Idol contracts of the time, or Adam's personal lawyers. I *do* recall hearing that Adam had a top-notch legal team, which I think he paid for out-of-pocket.
