Question: If one pre-orders the album - will it negate the single purchase? Q3 probably knows the correct answer.
Usually they invite you to pre-purchase the cd and get the lead single right away. Whether I counts towards a single sale, I am not sure. One thing I do know for sure: if you purchase the cd, you will not be able to buy the 2nd single when it is released.
I always pre-order a hard copy of the cd and only complete the CD digital download after the singles have run their course.
If you make a digital purchase with the same account of BOTH from iTunes -- yes If you want the iTunes album DO NOT PREORDER IT. Wait until release week. They will count on release week. With so many choices, my recommendation is to buy the singles from iTunes because the singles chart matters and the album anywhere else. |

Taking a moment to appreciate the fact that this thing hasn't been leaked by anyone. I know how hard artists and their teams work to avoid leaks and am just so happy that Adam and his have apparently (knock wood) succeeded. It is astonishing (good) how many people have access and have not leaked it. |

The album pre-order would show up on the iTunes chart as +1. The cancellation will show up on the iTunes chart as -1 (removing a sale when it happens -- and if it is right before the release would be bad). The final purchase will show up on the iTunes chart in the sale week. If you bought GT single from iTunes, a -1 will go against the GT track on the album release week. THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING IN THE US. No matter what you do, Billboard and all the other national album charts will credit the pre-orders when delivered. The iTunes single chart is most important. Adam needs to prove to radio execs that he can sell tracks. ETA: You could pre-order TOH from iTunes for fun, and just cancel it. Then buy the album somewhere else. Just remember to cancel it.
