I agree that he used a prominent vibrato. I hear it as a stylistic thing. He did it on Soaked in GNT as well. I think it evokes drama in high order. OTT. One can't do Freddy without super drama vocally and visually. The vibrato adds a type of sophistication, class, and a classical touch to my ears. Instead of the hard rock piercing wails. Freddy enjoyed adding classical references in his compositions. Lots of sophistication, musically. He also sometimes used a lot of vibrato. What is amazing about the performance (well, what isn't?) is how powerful Adam sounded, how fierce, how commanding, and yet, there was not a smidge of strain or stress in his voice. A very classical, legitimate sounding powerhouse, that somehow totally fit with Queen's classic rock. I'm glad you didn't think there was any stress. To me it did seem like he was pushing it (maybe more in watching it than in just listening) and not something he'd want to do every day. Reminded me a bit of Time for Miracles where the producer pushed him more than he wanted. Here at least he could back off and put it where he wanted and of course for a measly three songs (ha) he could take it all the way to the end wailing as much as he wanted to. LOL! No way! No more than he pushed it several times a week for several songs a night for nine months on tour! This was NOTHING!!! I think Adam knows his voice by now!!

I really need Adam to record The Show Must Go On. i am still tearing up everytime I listen to him sing it.
I think the "he isn't theatrical enough" critique was a joke because he sure looked theatrical enough to me. I am so proud and happy for him. The one word out of all the smooshie adjectives I can think of that seem to stand out for me regarding his performance is "perfect." There is nothing I would change about his performance (except maybe adding a few more songs).
I had a terrible racing heart and fear during the night thinking about his performance, but something came over me this morning and I was so calm. I pictured him in my mind just as he was tonight and knew he would nail it. The day was very calm for me. Hooray for Adam.

How can people who write musical reviews for newspapers be so ignorant?; www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/music-news/8871749/MTV-EMAs-2011-live.html#disqus_thread23:03 One can only hope Brian May has been thinking too much about the hedgehogs to make clear decisions about who he should share stages with. Adam Lambert's self-indulgent warbling over Brian's badass guitar was horrendous. Adam was seriously so good, that doesn't even bother me. I just laugh and think, "yeah, right.". I don't think many listening with an open mind will share his view.

I am so pumped up by Adam's performance tonight that I can't go to sleep. So, here is my review.
"But it's been no bed of roses. No pleasure cruise. I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, and I ain't gonna lose! We are the champions."
Adam Lambert burst onto the national stage in the 2009 season of Idol. An example of how talent can be discovered, molded, and created by the program, and then, go on to a successful recording career. ...... NOT!
Adam's whole life, since the age of ten, has been focused on being a performer and artist. He studied his craft for years, he pounded the pavement, he knocked on hundreds of doors which were mostly slammed in his face. He was undaunted. He continued to build his voice, build his performance skills, build his knowledge of music of all kinds. He had the talent, he had the training, he had the experience, he had the vision, he had the determination and perseverence.
At the EMA awards show on November 6th, Adam dug down deep and called on everything in his impressive arsenal and gave us a quintessential performance. This is not an emerging artist. This is not an effemeral pop singer here today and gone tomorrow. What we witnessed, what we heard, what we saw, was Adam claiming his place as a world class performer with confidence, skill and power.
The vocals were amaaaazing. He used all his technique, all his knowledge of his body, and produced a sound that was strongly influenced by his classical training and background. It was much more than singing the right pitches, hitting the right notes. The sound evoked the power and finesse of an opera tenor, while modifying it to fit the classic rock numbers. His articulation was crystal clear. His attack, his subtle bending of notes and phrases gave the performance the emotions inherent in the songs.
He claimed the stage with his posture, his presence, his prowling. At the same time, his performance was in service to the tribute to Queen, never elevating himself above the song or the members of the band. He started his ethereal vocals in shadow, as if saying, "Who I am is not important. What I am singing, what we are creating, what we are paying homage to is key."
He threw the focus repeatedly to Brian May, encouraging him, acknowledging him, egging him on, enticing him onto the catwalk with him, leading him out front to his fans. He at once threw himself into the performance with total abandon and fearlessness, subsuming who he was into the greater total of what was being created. Yet, by doing that, and by doing it so masterfully, he was also being quintessentially himself. I do believe that only Adam Lambert could have accomplished that performance that night.
Adam has arrived. Adam has claimed his power and his place. It is magnificent to see and hear.

I KNOW THIS IS A DEAD (OR DYING) THREAD RIGHT NOW, BUT... I WATCHED THE LIVESTREAM WITH MY HEART IN MY THROAT...AND HE DID IT! HE KILLED IT! THE WHOLE DAMN DAY, IN EVERY WAY! I LOVED HIS REDPINK CARPET LOOK! BEAUTIFUL BLUE SUIT WITH THAT BUTTERFLY SHIRT (CLUE TO BUTTERFLY LINE IN TSMGO?) AND THOSE COOL SHOES!! SO MANY GOOD SMILEY PICS! I LOVED THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN SAY HIS NAME. IT WAS ALL ABOUT QUEEN. HE JUST ADDED HIS "MARVEL"OUS VOICE IN TRIBUTE TO FREDDIE, NOT IN IMITATION OF. AND HIS LOOK--THAT GORGEOUS PUGH COAT THAT WE FINALLY GOT TO SEE FULL-LENGTH AND HIS BELOVED MEDGES--HIS OWN LOOK, AS WELL AS HIS OWN WONDERFUL INTERPRETATION OF 3 GREAT QUEEN SONGS. I don't care what one too-cool-for-school UK critic says (did you read her whole post? she sucks lemons for a living): ADAM FUCKING LAMBERT MADE ONE OF OUR DREAMS (AND ONE OF HIS) COME TRUE TODAY. IN THE PIMP SPOT. OF A HUGE AWARDS SHOW. AND IN AN AMAZINGLY CLASSY FASHION.I LOVE HIM SO FUCKING MUCH RIGHT NOW! ;D AND I LOVE ALL THE OLD(er, longtime posters) PEEPS WHO CAME OUT FOR THIS! VALILAC, BRIDGEYMAH, THEOSGMA, AND MANY MANY MORE. AND I LOVE ALL THE NEWBIES WHO'VE CHIMED IN RECENTLY TO ADD THEIR PERSONALITIES TO THE ATOP MIX. MY HEART IS FULL.

Had to come back and flail some more now that dh is down for the night.
What a great night! Words really do fail. I was reading the comments in the Hollywood Reporter article, here is a comment from William Hat: Queen's choice to have Adam Lambert front them during the MTV EMA's speaks volumes of Mr. Lambert's vocals. I am one of the BIGGEST Queen fan and I say - Well done Mr. Lambert, you did Freddie proud. I know he was looking down smiling. It was the best part of the whole night. Don't know how MTV will ever top the 2011 EMA's, but good luck trying.
Lots of great comments there, this one just stood out for me. Carry on, I'm still on p. 126, and Adam is on repeat for the XX# time

Fun to see the "old timers" crawl out of our caves and into the sunshine on this grand and glorious day... and those of you that know me know it takes a lot to make me squee and flail so today must have been something special. :-) and it was. I sent the youtube of the performance to a friend here in the music biz who has heard of Adam but not heard much of his beyond his radio songs... his reaction was: "Wow... he has an amazing voice... especially near the end." LOL he doesn't give accolades much or easily so this was huge praise from him.
