Adam: Live at the Roxy
1.29.21 by Q3
Last night, for about an hour and 20 minutes, I forget about everything and just had some fun. It has been a long time since I've seen Adam in concert. That ended last night with a tour de force of Adam Live in my living room, on the big screen in surround sound. Adam sang almost non-stop crossing genres as if it was normal. And in a very moment, the second concert ended with the band presenting Adam with a birthday cake with candles.
And yes, in true Adam style, Adam asked if we were having fun more than once!!
I watched the second concert but based on fan reviews both concerts were great. I know that mine was amazing.
The setlist:
1. Stranger You Are
2. Roses
3. Superpower
4. New Eyes
5. Comin In Hot
6. Starman (David Bowie cover)
7. Loverboy
8. Velvet
9. Ghost Town
10. If I Had You
11. The Original High (Demo version)
12. A Loaded Smile
13. Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen cover)
14. Runnin' / Chokehold / Sleepwalker
15. Whataya Want From Me (P!nk cover)
16. Love Dont
17. Trespassing / Another One Bites the Dust (Queen cover)
18. Music Again
If the above setlist is not correct, please post in comments and I will fix it.
The concert started without any introduction or lead-in music. Just a shot of a drum and then Adam was in my living room. The production and streaming tech was so good, I forget this was a live concert most of the time. It was just Adam on my TV.
There was no audience but it sounded like several people were clapping here and there. Oh, if I could have been one of these lucky few.
Adam was glittery from head to toe: glittery sun glasses, a iridescent suit, more jewelry than almost any other human can wear, and, revealed later in the concert, glittery eye makeup.
Many of the performances and arrangements were or felt very new. For example, "The Original High" was the demo versus the album version. It remains one of my favorite Adam songs. A few songs that he chose surprised me. Don't BoRhap as a solo vocalist with a four-person band was audacious and surprisingly great. For most performers this would have been a fun, karaoke moment. But Adam pulled it off -- in a way that I don't think anyone else could. The layers of vocals and instrumentation were not there but nothing was missing.
The concert started with seven songs from Adam's latest album, Velvet, and a cover of David Bowie's "Starman." "Roses" and "Velvet" were both standouts to me. Even my non-fan guest who watched the concert with me, loved "Velvet."
Adam's "Starman" was perfect! (I would love to have an Adam concert of just Bowie covers. He really does justice to these songs.) When the "Starman" chorus started, I joined in.
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
I am pretty sure most fans were singing along at the end when Adam asked up to join in.
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
[Outro]
La, la, la, la-la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la-la, la, la, la
My first "best moment of the concert" was the Runnin'/Chokehold/Sleepwalker medley. {no words} This was the moment that got me up on my feet, singing along loudly. I'll come to my "best" moment of the concert in a bit.
A few highlights of the concert for me, were from Adam's debut album, For Your Entertainment, "If I Had You" and "A Loaded Smile" both done in a more restrained manner than the recorded versions. I have been a fan of IIHY from the first time I heard it but I found last's night's version was the best so far. On the the other hand, I never liked "A Loaded Smile" on the album and was surprised how once that song was freed from the overdone, overbearing production, how good it is.
Of course, two of Adam's biggest hits were included, WWFM and "Ghost Town." Adam introduced "Ghost Town" with a brief statement about how the meaning had changed for him in the current time. Perhaps it was the context he set for GT but I just don't remember being moved by this song before. But in this moment, the song took on a strange, melancholy spirit and made me reflect on all the ghosts we now have and how it makes me feel -- the emptiness in my heart.
Adam returned to Velvet at the end of the concert for fan favorite "Love Dont." I admit, I do not quiet understand the love for this song but the performance filled it with some life and was IMHO an improvement over the recorded version.
He seamlessly shifted in time and genre to the Trespassing/AOBTD medley that he regularly performed in the past. His performance of "Trespassing" were real standouts and AOBTD was perform with the kind of ownership that only the current lead vocalist of Queen could interject. I was back in full party mode.
Now, for my bestest moment of the concert, "Music Again." Adam closed the concert with "Music Again." There could not have been a better song to end this concert.
There had been many moons before I met ya
And I ain't going nowhere
And now you give me back my raisin d'etre
And I'm inspired again
And I know in some ways I'm kinda evil
Got my roots in you, got ties
But my heart's no stranger to upheaval
Put your little hand in mine and
Look into my eyes very eyes
And at the moment, Adam looked into the camera with Gloria Swanson from Sunset Boulevard eyes and a checky smile. I was inspired again. No it was not a live concert. And I was not in a live audience sharing the experience with you and other fans. But it was an Adam concert and I knew that fans were watching the concert from all over the world and sharing the experience.
I hope Adam does this again. I need music in my life and he is my fav vocalist.
As the concert started, it ended. There was not a lot of fanfare, just a few people clapping and cheering. Then the band presented Adam with a birthday cake and he blow out the candles. Happy Birthday Adam! Thanks for sharing your celebration with all of us.
Did you watch one of the concerts? What did you think?
