KIIS leads radio ratings as KBIG leaps over KFI for No. 2 spot
Top 40 station KIIS-FM (102.7) solidified its lead in the local radio standings while its sister station, adult-contemporary outlet KBIG-FM (104.3), leaped to No. 2 in May, according to figures released Monday by the Arbitron ratings service.
KBIG — the station dubbed "MYfm" that offers a range of music including Katy Perry, Nirvana, Adam Lambert and Kid Rock — has looked strong in 2012. After sitting in 11th as recently as November, the station had held fourth place among all Los Angeles-Orange County listeners 6 and older since January.
Except for Christmastime, when adult-contemporary station KOST-FM (103.5) dominated the ratings with its continuous holiday music, KIIS and talk station KFI-AM (640) had spent most of the past year dueling for the top spot in the ratings, and the attendant bragging rights. Last month, however, KBIG pushed KFI to third, based on the survey of listeners from April 26 to May 23.
KBIG program director Andrew Jeffries said that the station's eclectic playlist helped it attract listeners who might also be fans of KIIS and fellow adult-contemporary station KOST-FM (103.5), but also from pop station KAMP-FM (97.1), alternative outlet KROQ-FM (106.7), and even classic-rock KLOS-FM (95.5) and hip-hop station KPWR-FM (105.9).
Thanks to that wide net, for the second month in a row, KBIG joined KIIS as the only stations in the market to surpass 3 million in average weekly audience — 3.15 million people tuned into KBIG for at least five minutes per week in May, while KIIS attracted 3.82 million.
