Old Men (Lay Down)
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - lead vocals, guitar, backing vocals Spike Edney - keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals Peter Noone - bass, backing vocals Clayton Moss - backing vocals, lead guitar Joshua J. Macrae - drums, percussion, backing vocals
- The first Roger track on the album! It shows how democratic the band had gotten. - A very midtempo tune and Roger begins to get political.
LIVE
LIVE IN GENEVA - 1990
- The last song of this clip.
PERSONAL NOTES: Roger's songs are still the best of the bunch. This is a nice building midtempo rocker. All in all a great track.
NEXT? Another Roger piece...Final Destination

Final Destination
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - lead vocals, guitar, backing vocals Spike Edney - keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals Peter Noone - bass, backing vocals Clayton Moss - backing vocals, lead guitar Joshua J. Macrae - drums, percussion, backing vocals
- Issued as a single in Germany - Played live throughout the 1990 tour - Later revisited by Roger during sessions for his next true solo album, Happiness? in 1994. He would re-record it with Japanese musician Yoshiki for a b-side in a superior version (imo) with a few altered lyrics - but we'll revisit that during those sessions.
LIVE PERFORMANCES
LIVE IN GENEVA 1990
- The last song of this clip.
PERSONAL NOTES: - One of the best songs on the album imo. It's a beautiful and building track. And yet it still isn't quite as good as the 1994 version! But for now it'll do!
Next up? That finishes the album proper so we are on to B-Sides and Demos. The first is the only B-Side and one that was performed in concert. Roger borrowed a little from Stealin' with In Charge Of My Heart

In Charge Of My Heart
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - lead vocals, guitar, backing vocals Spike Edney - keyboards, mandolin, backing vocals Peter Noone - bass, backing vocals Clayton Moss - lead guitar, backing vocals Joshua J. Macrae - drums, percussion, backing vocals
- The B-Side to Liar. - Bears a lot of lyrical similarity to Stealin' so it may have been borne from those sessions.
ALTERNATE RELEASES
EXTENDED VERSIONS
- ESSENTIAL - This version adds about two minutes and a lot of it is a moody intro section but it adds a ton to the song.
LIVE IN GENEVA
- The first track.
PERSONAL NOTES: - While a bit incomplete sounding at times, it's one of my favorite tracks of the sessions. Fun and rocking.
NEXT? A demo from the band written by Clayton - I Can't Get You Out Of My Head

I Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Written by: Clayton Moss
Known Musicians:
Roger Taylor - vocals
- This demo was initially thought to be from the Strange Frontier sessions and purely Roger. However later on Clayton Moss covered it for his Cross Section album and had claimed it was a Cross demo that he had written.
EDITED IN: Released on Roger Taylor's box set, The Lot it is a slight edit taking off the count in. It is confirmed to be from the Jam Studios Sessions.
PERSONAL NOTES: It's a fun track. Almost countryish in a way but a nice midtempo rocker. It should have been at least a b-side.
Next? We're done with The Cross' studio output in 1990 and we move to the Miscellaneous. Which is basically Brian doing a charity song and a score for a UK Shakespeare production....

MISCELLANEOUS 1990Rock Against Repatriation - SailingWritten by: Gavin Sutherland Musicians: Brian May - guitar Guitars - Steve Hackett, Phil Manzanera, Steve Rothery, Bass - Pino Palladino Vocals - Bonnie Tyler, Paul Carrack, Curt Smith, Mark King, Judie Truke, Steve Hogarth, Kevin Godley, Ian Sutherland, Jim Diamond, Justin Hayward Backing Vocals - Tom Conti, Steve Hackett, Paul Muggleton, Judie Truke Piano - Howard Jones Keyboards and programming - Nick Magnus Percussion - Nick Magnus Drums - Simon Phillips Strings - The London Chamber Orchestra Bagpipes - The Pride Of Murray Bagpipe Band Special Guests - Mike Rutherford, Adam Woods, John Hackett - Both the song and it's instrumental are in the above YT vid. - A charity project supergroup formed by Steve Hackett to try and raise awareness/raise money to help stop the repatriation of the Vietnamese 'Boat People' in Hong Kong. There was supposed to be an album but this fell through so only the single was released from the project. PERSONAL NOTES: Not much to think. A nice guitar solo from the doctor and a nice cause. Well done. MacbethScore written by Brian May ** Extracts ** Brian recorded the soundtrack for a theatre production of 'Macbeth' on a computer in 1990. Parts of the track had already been written by someone else, but Brian added sections to complete it. The music was copied onto a cassette to play in the theatre, and so three versions are available - from the floppy disc, the cassette, or recordings from the theatre itself (which also include dialogue and audience noise). There are at least two tracks in circulation which include music, lasting 9:24 and 17:13, and both were recorded among the audience. They feature a number of distinct synthesiser pieces, rather than one long track, which are probably best described as 'mood music', and unusually for Brian, none of the excerpts appear to include any guitar. Against the dialogue from the play, the music is quite effective, but the pieces which are 'standalone' are rather odd taken out of context. PERSONAL NOTES: Honestly? I'm not a big fan. It's much too computerized for me. But no big deal...movin' on NEXT? 1990 LIVE! Basically a Cross tour and some miscellaneous dates for Brian...including one fairly cool concert at the end of the year...

NEXT? We start Queen's final album released while Freddie was alive...Innuendo

1991, a year of InnuendoA little background: After completing The Miracle and with no hope for a tour due to Freddie's decline, the band went right back into the studio to continue working on the next album. Of course recording was sporadic depending on Freddie's health and yet the band members will say that it was a truly positive experience and that for the most part they rallied together. The result is their finest albums in years. Critics and superfans alike (even those who felt the band declined throughout the 80s) would say that this album would rank right up there with A Night At The Opera and the like. And with great reason. While I once semi-complained that The Works was Queen by numbers in play it safe mode, I will say that while Innuendo is a bit in that vein, it is done properly. Not simply a rehash but breaking new ground with nods to a storied career. And Freddie despite his illness and partially because he gave up smoking, sounds crystal clear here. It also unfortunately sees the distancing from the group by John Deacon. As mentioned before it was he who had taken Freddie's illness the hardest and it becomes evident when there are no solely Deacon credits here. He wasn't completely uninvolved but he certainly wasn't as all in and went holidaying several times during sessions. Continuing from The Miracle all songs are credited to Queen but again I will delve into the true author. Some tracks were performed live over the years by Brian, Roger, and combinations. It hit #1 in the UK, Italy, Germany, the Dutch charts, and Switzerland while hitting #6 in Australia, #2 in Austria, #16 in Canada, #9 in France, #17 in Japan, #6 in New Zealand, #8 in Norway, and #30 in the US. Tracks on the album1. Innuendo (Mercury/Taylor - some assistance from May and perhaps Deacon) 2. I'm Going Slightly Mad (Mercury) 3. Headlong (May) 4. I Can't Live With You (May) 5. Don't Try So Hard (Mercury) 6. Ride The Wild Wind (Taylor) 7. All God's People (Mercury/Moran) 8. These Are The Days Of Our Lives (Taylor) 9. Delilah (Mercury) 10. The Hitman (Mercury/May/Deacon) 11. Bijou (Mercury/May) 12. The Show Must Go On (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon - but mostly Mercury/May) Additional Released Tracks13. Lost Opportunity (B-Side) (May) 14. Queen Talks (B-Side) Unreleased Tracks15. My Secret Fantasy (Demo) (Deacon/Mercury) 16. Robbery (Demo)(Taylor (May?)) 17. Self Made Man (Demo) (May) 18. Affairs (Demo) (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon) 19. Grand Dame (Demo) (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon) Rumored Tracks20. Assassin - Initially thought to be a demo of the title track but that was debunked 21. Driven By You - Ended up on Brian's 1992 solo album 22. New Dark Ages - Ended up on The Cross' 1991 album - thought to have been rejected by John 23. Freedom Train - Ended up on Roger's 1994 solo album First up? Innuendo

Innuendo
Written by: Freddie Mercury/Roger Taylor (with some help from Brian May)
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, keyboards Brian May - guitars John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, percussion Steve Howe - Spanish guitar solo David Richards - keyboard programming
- Issued as a single backed with ‘Bijou’ and ‘Under Pressure’ in the UK (where it hit #1). Issued as a single backed with ‘Bijou’ in January 1991 in Australia (where it hit #27), The Netherlands (where it hit #4), and Italy. Issued as a single backed with ‘Bijou’ and ‘Under Pressure’ in January 1991 in Brazil, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Japan (where it did not chart), Mexico, and Spain.
- Steve How from Yes is a friend of the band's and that's how he ended up on the track.
- Played live only at the Freddie Mercury Tribute (with Robert Plant).
- There is a demo in the vaults with Roger on lead vocals.
QUOTES:
“Big, long and pretentious! It goes through a lot of changes." - Roger Taylor - 1991
"I think 'Innuendo' was one of those things which could either be big – or nothing. We had the same feelings about Bohemian Rhapsody. It's a risk, because a lot of people say, 'It's too long, it's too involved, and we don't want to play it on the radio.' I think that could be a problem in which case it will die. Or it could happen that people say, 'This is interesting and new and different,' and we'll take a chance." - Brian May - 1991
"[The song] started off as most things do, with us just messing around and finding a groove that sounded nice. All of us worked on the arrangement. Freddie started off the theme of the words as he was singing along, then Roger worked on the rest of them. I worked on some of the arrangement, particularly the middle bit, then there was an extra part that Freddie did for the middle as well. It basically came together like a jigsaw puzzle." - Brian May - 1991
"It's got the bolero-type rhythm, a very strange track. That's going to be the first single here. It's a bit of a risk, but it's different, and you either win it all or you lose it all. It had a nice sound and feel, and we stuck with that. The Spanish motif is suggested from the start: those little riffs at the beginning are sort of Bolero-esque. It seemed like the natural thing to explore those ideas on an acoustic guitar, and it just gradually evolved. Steve Howe helped out and did a fantastic job. We love all that stuff – it's like a little fantasy land adventure." - Brian May - 1991 - Guitar World
"[Steve] just happened to be around in Switzerland, when we were working and he just dropped in. We were working on this little Spanish guitar piece in the middle. He's very good at that sort of stuff, so instantly it seemed like a good idea to get him in to play all the stuff that I can't play." - Brian May - 1991 - Guitar Magazine
"'Innuendo' was an improvisation type song where they actually recorded it here in the big concert hall, it's just next door, and we set up like a live performance, and they just started playing, and sort of got into a nice rhythm and a groove, and some chords and then Freddie said, 'Oh, I like that,' and rushed downstairs into the concert hall and started singing along with it. Obviously then, once that initial idea was down on tape, then there was a lot of rearranging and putting extra things on, but the actual beginning of it was like a live thing. It just happened. It was wonderful. [Freddie] played a strong role in the writing of ['Innuendo']. Steve just happened to drop in one day to say hello to me. He had been recording at Mountain some ten years before with the group Yes. As soon as he popped his head round the door Freddie recognized him and said, 'Come on in and play some guitar!' He had no guitar with him so he used Brian's Dan Armstrong acoustic guitar with a direct output and tone control. Brian played the rhythm guitar and then echoed the solo afterwards on the Red Special." - David Richards - 2001
"It was a group collaboration, but I wrote the lyrics. I think the lyrics were mine, and the rest of it was the band. It was a group effort." - Roger Taylor 2002
"They played me 'Innuendo' and I go, 'Yeah, heavy metal flamenco!' And then Brian says, 'Look, I'd like you play on this,' and I said, 'You're joking, it sounds great, leave it like it is,' and he said, 'No no no, I want you to play on it, I want to you to play really fast, I want you to run around the guitar a lot.' So within a couple of hours I tested some of his Gibsons, Chet Atkins classical solid body guitars, and found one that I helped balance the strings because he wasn't sure how to balance the volume between the different strings which is the important thing to do on those guitars. So I got up and running, we did a few takes, we edited it a little bit, we fixed up a few things, then we went and had dinner. So we went back to the studio and they said we really really like this and I said, 'Fine, let's go with it.' So I left very happy. I'd worked with people who were diehard Queen people, and a funny thing happened a little while later, I was on a ferry going to The Netherlands and on this ferry which takes a long time, five hours, were the Queen fan club, all going to Rotterdam to a Queen event, and a couple of them saw me and they came racing over and they said, 'You're Steve Howe! You're on "Innuendo"!' And they all came out of the room, sitting around talking and things... and my memories of Queen will always be emotional because they were a great band and it was just great, it really was a thrill to be part of that, and thanks for asking me." - Steve Howe
ALTERNATE RELEASED PERFORMANCES
VIDEO VERSION
- NOT essential - some added wind noise in the beginning
EXPLOSIVE VERSION
- NOT essential - the end trails out into this explosion.
GREATEST HITS II EDIT
- NOT essential - a slight early fade out.
WE WILL ROCK YOU VERSION
- ESSENTIAL - A short snippet used to introduce the Musical but it takes a different vocal take from Freddie.
UNRELEASED
1989 DEMO
- NOT essential but interesting to see.
LIVE
QUEEN + ROBERT PLANT - 1992 - FREDDIE TRIBUTE
- The only time the band ever attempted this track.
PERSONAL NOTES: I LOVE this song. After a decade of more simpler, poppy songs, this track really hearkens back to their pomp and epic tracks of the 70s. Great tempo changing, beautiful lyrics, and some great vocals and guitar work. One of my favorites. During the QAL tour, when I first heard the band go into the drum duet, I thought momentarily that Roger was doing the opening of Innuendo....*sigh*.
Next up? Completely different style and one of the most fun songs the band ever did...I'm Going Slightly Mad

Talon, I can't find Innuendo on the list of songs on soon to be released Freddie Tribute concert DVD/Blu-Ray. Do you have any idea why it's not included?
