1991 Innuendo Radio Tour
A little background. With Freddie unable to do any press at this point to promote the band and John never being one for the press, promotion fell to Roger and Brian. Furthermore after Brian's personal issues (his divorce and his father dying) had kept him a bit below the radar for The Miracle, he felt even more responsibility to carry the mantle for Innuendo. One of the things he did was a tour of US radio stations where they talked about the band, the album, the desire but inability to tour (usually stating that they were always thinking of possible tours but that there was no plans to announce....now we know why).
Furthermore though in an interesting take, the DJs would play Queen tracks (older and newer) and Brian would plug into the console and play along usually doing something completely alternative to use as a counterpoint.
Some unscrupulous fans tried to pass these off as demos but they aren't. BUT they are very cool and unique to listen to!
Next? The rest of 1991's live gigs!

Yeah I'll pick this up. Although I don't think it'll be much of an improvement or anything different from the 10th anniversary one...

Quick note - No press release yet (SO you know I don't believe it til then...hell sometimes until I have it in my hand) BUT...there was a leak on QZ about RT's upcoming October releases. Now I don't know the user well in terms of breaking news, but he's a respected poster. Here's what he got: 4 disc compilation. I'm quite sure that much of which will be taken up by all the b-sides, extended mixes, etc. but perhaps some demos and live tracks as well? Definitely great news. AND a version of Small! I was hoping for that myself. 8 tracks that are completely new (yes 2 were heard at conventions) , 5 tracks that are redone/updated and THEN 2 new tracks for the box set on the new album...so possibly 10 completely new tracks. All in all the box definitely has my $$$. And I like that as of now there is no need to buy the box AND the album (I know some will anyways ) Really hoping things don't change between now and the official press release. Reportedly GT took to FB (although I couldn't find it) to clarify that "there are not 4 discs of 'unreleased' stuff" Honestly too good to be true in Queenland. If so, the fans will be excited. I'm actually more excited about this than I was QPR's The Cosmos Rocks album. My favorite release since 2000's Freddie box set!

Brian May - Back To The Light (1992)A little background This album was a long time in coming. It had it's roots in the Flash Gordon sessions back in 1980 where indeed the opening instrumental was initially recorded. Brian continued throughout the 80s recording in drips and drabs until about 1988 where it became a bit more serious while Roger and Freddie were off doing solo projects. But given his outside production work, personal life, and work with Queen it's no wonder it took so long to complete. It would finally be released in 1992 (1993 in the US!). It barely made a dent in the US (hitting #157) but it was a definite hit in the UK (climbing to #6). By the time it was released, the public knew of two songs for a while...Too Much Love Will Kill You, which Brian debuted at the Freddie Tribute and Driven By You which had been initially written for and used for a Ford advertisement in 1991! In a time where Brian was trying to distance himself from Queen after Freddie's death it was a good vehicle for Brian to start a large scale tour and finding himself. Tracks on the album1. The Dark (May) 2. Back To The Light (May) 3. Love Token (May) 4. Resurrection (May/Powell/Page) 5. Too Much Love Will Kill You (May/Musker/Lamers) 6. Driven By You (May) 7. Nothin' But Blue (May/Powell) 8. I'm Scared (May) 9. Last Horizon (May) 10. Let Your Heart Rule Your Head (may) 11. Just One Life (May) 12. Rollin' Over (Marriot/Lane) DEMOS13. Sleepy Blues First up? The Dark

The Dark
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, guitars, keyboards
- Mostly instrumental prologue of sorts to the album.
- The lyrics are actually not from Queen's We Will Rock You, but instead from a traditional lullaby. It works in both ways.
- This track specifically was initially recorded back in 1980 during the Flash Gordon sessions.
- This track opened up all of Brian's 1992-1993 tours but it was done as Procession did twenty years earlier - as a taped intro.
PERSONAL NOTES: A great and dramatic way to open the album and nice segue into the title track.
Next? Brian goes Back To The Light

Back To The Light
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, backing vocals, guitar, keyboards Cozy Powell - drums Gary Tibbs - bass guitar Miriam Stockley - backing vocals Maggie Ryder - backing vocals Suzie O'List - backing vocals Gill O'Donovan - backing vocals
- Recorded in 1988, this became the focus of the album as Brian used it as a catharsis to deal with the pain he had been feeling from several areas in his life.
- Issued as a single in the UK which hit #19
- Played live throughout the 1992-1993 tours.
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
RADIO EDIT NO YT VID - NOT ESSENTIAL, an early fade out is all that is different
DEMO NO YT VID - NOT ESSENTIAL - A snippet of a rougher, earlier version.
LIVE VERSIONS:
LIVE AT BRIXTON ACADEMY
-A great performance from the only officially released show - it includes The Dark opening. - Humorous in that Brian is REALLY not used to being a frontman and you can tell. He gets better as the tour goes on and he is much better in 1998 and subsequently on Queen tours but he is definitely finding his way. He really doesn't know what to do with his hands when they aren't playing the Red Special.
LIVE ON THE TONIGHT SHOW
- Another decent performance. This includes an interview and their second song, Tie Your Mother Down with Slash from Guns N Roses guesting.
PERSONAL NOTES: Just a beautiful, powerful track. Very uplifting, and very emotional. I use it when I'm feeling down and it tends to point me in the right direction!
Next up? A humorous track, what Brian calls an old mama vs papa track...Love Token

Love Token
Written by: Brian May
Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, backing vocals, guitar Cozy Powell - drums Neil Murray - bass guitar Mike Moran - piano
- A rocking but humorous song about love gone wrong. Brian called it one of a series of mama-papa love gone wrong songs.
- Issued as a standalone b-side to Resurrection.
- It seamlessly transitions into Resurrection on the album with a riproaring piano outro from Mike Moran.
- Brian played it live throughout the 1992-1993 tours and it seemed to expand out humorously the longer the tour went with simulated arguments with his female backing singers. It gets kind of raunchy at times!
ALTERNATE VERSION
SINGLE VERSION NO YT - NOT ESSENTIAL - Merely without the transition.
EXPLETIVE VERSION
- NOT essential but funny - merely changes a few lyrics around ("Meat for brains becomes Shit for brains" and an added "Fuck you!"
LIVE VERSIONS
Live At Brixton Academy
Live at Barcelona
PERSONAL NOTES: It is much better live as it's almost a musical. It's very fun and very rocking.
Next? Another in Brian's comeback to the light songs...a HEAVY rocking track called Resurrection

Resurrection
Written by: Brian May/Cozy Powell/Jaime Page
Musicians:
Brian May - vocals, backing vocals, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards Cozy Powell - drums Don Airey - extra keyboards
- Played live on both of Brian's solo tours, incorporating drum solos and during 1992-1993 incorporating the heavy rock section of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with one such performance featuring on Live At Brixton Academy
- Initially an instrumental song called "Ride To Win" on Cozy Powell's album. Brian took the song, rearranged it and wrote lyrics to it.
- Issued as a single in the UK where it hit #23 and in Japan where it did not chart.
“And on 'Resurrection', which is the highest point and the loudest stuff on the album, I really went for it - that was the extreme that I pushed myself to. It's amazing what you can do when you try. When I started off, I couldn't get close to those notes; I wanted to get that top D but I was four or five semitones away from that. But if you do it every day, which I did, you get there.” - Brian May - 1992 - Rock Power
“Brian heard some of the tracks I wrote, liked what he heard, and said ‘Could I use a couple for my album? We’ll re-arrange them, and I’ll write some lyrics.” - Cozy Powell – Rip - 1993
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
SINGLE VERSION
- The official video and a more concise - mostly cutting out the atmospheric intro. There some other cuts but those are the big cuts.
PILL SAMPLER EDIT NO YT VID - Very close to the single with a few more cuts.
LIVE VERSION LIVE AT BRIXTON ACADEMY
- Great version! Has an extended Cozy Powell drum solo and a short snippet of the heavy rock section of Bohemian Rhapsody
NEXT? One of my favorite Brian songs ever and a future (?) Queen song...Too Much Love Will Kill You
