LIVE 1998 PART I: ANOTHER WORLD PROMO TOUR

The first part is a short simple mini tour. Before Brian May took his band out on another world tour he did a small semi-acoustic promotional gig, breaking in a few new band members after the death of Brian's good friend Cozy Powell. For this tour, Steve Ferrone was brought in on drums/percussion to join Brian May Band stalwarts, Jamie Moses (guitar/vocals), Spike Edney (keyboards), Neil Murray (bass), and Zoe Nicholas & Suzie Webb (backing vocals).

During this short tour is the only time we hear Why Don't We Try Again, we get the rare appearance of the countryish version of Tie Your Mother Down and the first time we get the new arrangement of Hammer To Fall which starts out as a slow ballad but eventually rocks out. It's a great arrangement.

LIVE 1998 PART II: ANOTHER WORLD TOUR

After the promo tour was done, Steve Ferrone was either no longer available or not someone Brian wanted to take on a full on solo "plugged in" tour. So Brian replaced him with Eric Singer (who is known for being the third...and current...drummer in Kiss) This would be the last full solo tour by Brian.

The concert would start with an intro tape of Dance With The Devil playing (in memory of Cozy Powell). Over this an announcement is made that Brian would be late and that instead his cousin T.E. Conway will perform a couple of songs. T.E. is actually Brian in disguise playing a good ol' boy from the south playing some 50s rock and roll tracks until he changes his places with his "double" (actually Brian's son Jimmy!) while Brian gets in place behind the curtain. Jimmy then introduces Brian and the concert continues on from there. It was a nice tour with a cool Queen medley being played in the middle as a "trip down memory lane". The slow-fast Hammer To Fall continues and Driven By You is also played acoustic. It also includes the debut of two Queen songs that weren't played live previously in Sleeping On The Sidewalk (OK, Queen reportedly played this ONCE on the first date of the News of the World tour but never again - and no recordings are known to exist) and Sail Away Sweet Sister

-- A very unique concert. Brian's guitar equipment fucked up very early in the show forcing some set list alterations and even some impromptu performances. After Business, Jamie Moses improvised by singing and playing the blues standard Hoochie Coochie Man. After that Brian did the songs he didn't need the Red Special for playing Another World far earlier than usual and going into the acoustic bit a bit sooner as well. The techs got it going and he was able to resume from there.

This video was a documentary by the DORO Twins entitled: Live at the Cyberbarn: The Making of a World Record. At the time the internet was not near what it is now. Roger attempted to harness a bit of power with this. He decided to hold a small gig in his barn on his property for a small handful of people. The twist is that he would broadcast it live streaming to the world on the internet.

Queen band member Roger Taylor last night succeeded in his attempt to set a world record for the biggest internet audience reached through an exclusive online concert.

Drummer/songwriter Taylor's successful attempt was confirmed by The Guinness Book of Records who late last night presented him with a Guinness Certificate in recognition of his achievement, which will be verified subject to receipt of appropriate documentation.

Taylor's live performance, promoted by some of the largest websites in the world, achieved a record 500 hits per second throughout its 45 minutes duration. The Queen/Roger Taylor website ( queen-fip.com ) which served as the access point to the concert recorded 595,000 hits during the concert and the build up to it. "This," confirmed EMI Music Vice-President of Broadcast and New Media Jeremy Silver, "is in excess of 50 per cent total number of hits recorded across all our UK EMI/Virgin artist sites in an average 24-hour period, which is remarkable."

Website partners who joined Taylor in his endeavour were spread as far across the world as Argentina and Japan, helping Taylor reach an unprecedented number of internet surfers. The extent of the broadcast's international reach was highlighted in the subsequent live internet chat, during which Taylor was inundated with questions from every major territory, extending from South America to Australia, with a surprising volume of hits from the Eastern block countries, most predominately the Czech Republic. Australia also featured large among the most regular visitors. Setting a further precedent, it was the first time that a live interview chat was seen in real-time audit and video.

Taylor's 45-minute set delighted world-wide fans with the inclusion of his own versions Queen classics "Radio Ga Ga", "We Will Rock You", "These Are The Days Of Our Lives", as well as selected tracks from his forthcoming new album, "Electric Fire", released September 28.

QUEEN + GREATEST HITS III

This is a bit of a strange album to be honest and one that was not overly well received by the fanbase for a few reasons. It WAS liked because it collected the hits that for whatever reason didn't make the first two Greatest Hits volumes.

BUT there were several decisions made that were quite questionable in fans eyes. One thing stated up front is that there was an arbitrary decision by the band a long time ago that to be on a Greatest Hits compilation it had to be a UK Top 30 song. That limited the band a bit and gave it less of a Queen feel. Especially when there was other Queen "hits" not represented (such as Flick Of The Wrist (technically yes, as a Double A-Side of Killer Queen), Scandal,Body Language, and A Winter's Tale. They also could have relaxed their standard a bit considering how well known some of these "not-quite" greatest hits were known (Tie Your Mother Down, Spread Your Wings,Love Of My Life (live), and Back Chat

Instead they stretched credibility a bit.
First the inclusion of solo material. The band had always kept Queen and solo material separate so to see three Freddie tracks and a Brian track didn't sit well. Secondly the inclusion of Queen + material sullied the album even though it was the well received Queen + George Michael. Even far less well received was the Queen + Wyclef version of Another One Bites The Dust.

The "bonus" track situation also was a bit weird. They used Thank God It's Christmas as a bonus track when it was never a Top 30, making the arbitrary decision look even worse. Then there are the first two tracks. The first being the 1997 live performance of Queen + Elton John of The Show Must Go On. As John Deacon's last performance it was definitely worth having but on a Greatest Hits album was a bit of a strange choice to be honest. Then finally Under Pressure (Rah Mix) . Brian had always said he wanted another go at the track and him and Roger put some new material down and used some archival pieces. It is a worthy effort and became a hit on it's own but I can't deny it was a strange choice. Though perhaps the least strange choice.

After releasing Electric Fire and the subsequent birth of his child, he finally had time to devote to a small UK only tour. It ended up being a much heavier tour than the Happiness? tour. He performed his usual bit of Queen pop tracks, but also some deeper cuts. Beyond that it was mostly Electric Fire shunning most of his previous solo career. Nothing from the Cross is played again, and only a smattering of pre-EF songs (Strange Frontier, Happiness and the taped opening of Interlude In Constantinople.

Roger's friend Treanna Morris became a big part of the tour. He helped her get her own record deal and she ended up forming the Wire Daisies along with Queen lawyer Jim Beach's son Ol. She opened up for Roger on tour and became backing vocalist/duet vocalist on a few tracks.

Roger had a lot of fun on this tour and it goes to show that if he does tour again it could be a fun time.

It is generally the same set but the first hint (in-show) was when they did not do Under Pressure after These Are The Days Of Our Lives. Why? Because they were saving it. After Strange Frontier the drum part began and Roger stated he found this guy outside and though the might want to get up on stage...and introduced Brian! I wish there was some YT vids of it. The bootleg I heard was phenomenal. And it was doubly cool hear Roger and Brian do a Led Zeppelin classic!
