a love-hate relationship for fans

With the 12th season of American Idol underway, and the Idol PR machine working hard to gin up some interest in the show, it is hard to ignore Idol this time of the year. And when

I am a fan of Adam Lambert and a long-time Idol fan. (Well not so much since "Adam broke Idol" for me but I have watched it for years.)

But when it comes to Adam, I want him to move beyond Idol. I want him to return to Idol triumphant. I don't want to read any more interview when the reporters ask him about Idol. I love to read those reports about how Adam won American Idol Season 8. I want Adam to be a mega popstar. I want him to be the biggest selling Idol of all time. I wanted him to be an Idol judge and yet I really did not want to have a "date" to watch every Wednesday and Thursday night. And I do not think I am alone.

Tonight, I was thinking about the debt I owe to Idol. Without Idol I would not have discovered Adam and we would not have all the amazing Idol performance moments.

Note: There is about 10 secs of Adam's version of IIHY in the background but not enough to warrant actually listening to this attempt to cover this song. Chris seems nice enough, but he cannot sing.



I know that the odds of Adam getting a recording contract with any major label were close to zero without Idol. Yes, this was his path to fame and fortune and apparently to a very nice and happy life.

But with all of that, I also cringe sometimes when I hear Adam referred to as, "Wasn't he the gay guy on Idol?" Thankfully, it is almost always followed by something like, "He can really sing."

It makes me wonder, what if 4-1/2 years ago Adam had taken another route and not decided to go on Idol. Where would he be now and what path would he have taken?

It is hard to believe that it has been four years since I heard "Mama."  What a diffierence those two notes have made in my life. I will be forever grateful to AI for casting Adam on that season.  So many good looking, talented, trained, professional singers from musical theater try out each year, and almost none make it through the audition process. How was it that the producers recognized that Adam was so much more than a theater guy with a great voice and an edgy haircut?  How was it that someone "got" Adam when directors, producers, and record executives didn't?  When even many of the critics writing about Idol didn't at the beginning?  We've discussed many times how Adam is a black swan, an outlier, an alien, who makes people vaguely uncomfortable with his fabulousness that they don't know how to process.  Whatever posessed the producers of such a mainstream, middle of the road, "middle-America" reality TV program to choose the alien from the planet Fierce?

However it happened, the universe, fate, faith, positive projection, or an undeveloped Glambert in the production staff, I truly believe the world is better for it.  Idol served its function. It gave us Adam Fucking Lambert. Its purpose has been fulfilled.  Now, it can continue to limp along as another reality TV popularity contest, or it can close up shop.  Don't care any more. When you have given the world the best singer of a generation what's left to accomplish?

Watched all the AI Adam performances last week, and what a wonderful body of work to preserve for posterity.  Today, I slipped the GNT DVD into my player and was blown away all over again with what an incredible performance that is. It is truly a compelling theater piece. And the vocals are AMAZING.  Isn't it wonderful how Adam can blow our minds all over again when we view his work?
