It was a sleepy Sunday morning here in San Diego when I decided to go off to see BR. Wanted to go to the first showing because I had lots of errands to do following the departure of our family visitors, back to the east coast. OMG! I arrived at the movie theater before 11 Am---and the ticket line was around the block! Needless to say, when I got inside, the theater was packed. And---the movie was showing on several screens ,both Imax and regular, throughout the day! I think this movie has hit a nerve with both Queen lovers/fans and those curious to see what the rave is all about. I ,of course was there for Adam---who made me love Queen's music more since that first night in Kiev. I loved seeing people of all ages and generations inside, when I finally got seated.Teenagers, younger kids, young adults, older folks, some of whom may have seen Freddie perform live decades ago. And I'm sure there were some who were there because of Adam and QAL. Brian and Roger and the powers that be,got it right. INCLUSIVITY---insisting on the PG13 rating opened the doors for this film to be seen by the masses, and I could see and hear so many teenagers commenting about the music when it was all over. I've read several books over the past few years about the life of Freddie Mercury and I didn't need to see specific details or descriptions of his sexual encounters on the screen, so the way his conflicting desires, leanings, were portrayed, were sufficient and honest enough for me. There were a couple of scenes of him kissing another man {which, in itself, is a freeing and relatively new aspect in a mainstream movie for all ages to see.} and there was a special energy in the theater from the very beginning. And I ,too, loved Rami's sweet welcome and expression of gratitude to all the fans who came to see the movie. His acting was an Oscar winning performance---and the whole cast was amazing. After awhile,it was difficult to distinguish them from the four original bandmates,{except for Roger who might have been more credible if he had more screen time, and looked a little more like him. I looked around a few times and was touched by the audience ; you could sense their joy for the music, the reactions to Freddie's melancholy, and the unique love for this band. No one left before the credits---which stunned me because I haven't experienced that in many years. When people did get up to leave, all I heard were positive comments and several saying they wanted to see it again. I hope Brian knows this because this film has accomplished,IMHO, what he and the rest set out to do---extend their legacy and bring their amazing catalogue to a new generation,as well as tell the story of their dear friend Freddie, to the world. Only one frustration for me---I couldn't stop moving my feet, my head,, my whole body, song after song; had to keep reminding myself,"Lorraine, you're at a movie and you need to stay still in your seat!!!!" Couldn't possibly stay still-even though I tried. I guess the music has inhabited my soul And yes-it was a thrill to see Adam, albeit for a few moments.
