Part 2 : The concerts review:
Circumstances prevented me to see Adam live for all these years. I was very close to going to Kiev in 2012 to see QAL but real life sucks sometimes and I couldn’t go. Either we didn’t have the money or there where troubles in our family that prevented us from going
I jumped up and down for like 15 minutes at work, colleagues looking at me like I’ve gone mad, when I saw that they will do another QAL tour in summer 2017. We felt they might continue to EU and UK and we could finally do it. This year turned out to be the lucky year. So we bought the vip tix to Bologna.
As soon as we got the vip tix we realized one concert is never gonna be enough because we wanted to see Adam up close too not just to hear his magnificent voice. I promised myself I would write the first post here on the day I get to see Adam.So at the presale few days later we got the standing tix in Vienna which would be our very first Adam and first Queen show.
We decided to go to Vienna too. We booked one of the nearest hotels which turned out was a good idea for many reasons. We planned on queuing as we wanted to get to the front of the stage. I was so glad when I read that some adamtopers are going to be there too and hoped I’d get to meet some of you.
It all worked out perfectly in Vienna. We posted our pics on the forum and marionm found us We met other glamberts, queenies, queenberts who were all so nice some of whom were staying at the same hotel. We weren’t the first in line as we posted, a girl Blanca was there at 4 am We had a laugh about it. I didn’t notice how time flew by as I was listening to the stories of all other people in the queue. We talked for hours and hours with marionm while we tried to catch Adam coming to the venue but alas they had underground parking, so no luck. The venue was very organized. They even took pity on us and let us hang around inside the ticket office were it was warm. Possible because of the weather the queue was small up until about 4 pm. People were coming and going but not staying in queue. We left everything at the hotel so we passed the security really fast and we got to the exact spots we wanted at the barrier at the front of the stage on Spike's (Adam's) side, where the lightning tech didn't block our view.
It was exactly as I thought it would be I love most of Queen songs since I was little thanx to dad, I know the words and I always dance, can’t help it Got the chance to dance in Vienna since people were respectful and didn’t push us from behind, didn’t take our spots. My sister and I decided not to film the concert, we wanted to “take it all in” and knew there would be some nice people doing that anyway.
So I just stared at Adam the whole show I really wanted to pay attention to the band and when Adam wasn’t on stage they did get my full attention. Yet as soon as Adam walked back on – I just couldn’t help it. Sometimes I didn't even noticed the stage hahaha I scolded myself that I wanted to see Brian and Roger from up-close too so I tried to pry my eyes away from Adam Then I noticed how much they are attuned to each other and how Adam manages to multi task, giving the techs signals, interacting with Brian, Roger, Neil, the crew. I was constantly amazed at the energy they have. I know how much it takes to do what they do and how hard it is, yet they make it seem so effortless.
The venue had some problems with the sound but judging from what marionm said and the videos I’ve seen, it was only in our section nearest to the stage. I think some of the speakers directed to the floor were old or didn’t work properly and they screeched a little when Brian played some notes and when Adam went for the high notes. It was mostly felt during STL where Adam had to get his monitors out cause the sound was hurting his ears. Maybe we noticed it cause we’ve seen it countless times before from backstage in our youth. They quickly fixed the sound problems. Yet we’ve seen when Adam and Brian looked at each other a few times for the rest of the show and decided on a lower key or shorter note I think. We could see that during Brian's solo too. He seemed to want to go for a note and then decided not too.To be able to improvise without many people noticing it it’s another skill. I’m glad people in the rest of arena, didn’t have any troubles with the sound.
Now about Adam OHHHHH where to begin??? I think he sings now better than ever. He out sings himself. If one goes back to the earliest videos one can see his growth as a performer. Its both experience and constant hard work beside nature. When I didn’t think it possible he still surprises me. We were lucky. He looked both my sister and I right in the eyes a few times and at first I thought I might be imaging it but later seen in the videos that I wasn’t. Maybe it was because we were dancing, rocking it and not holding a phone. Not sure and I’m probably wrong, but at one point I think he looked at both of us to check if we are not twins when the light was on us. We get that a LOT. Like every other day. LOL. And it’s the same expression, that thrown on people’s faces when they concentrate and try to see if their first impression is right. Although we were born a year and a half apart we look very much alike to people who don’t know us. My sister used my IDs several times and we never got caught.
I think he was also looking a lot at a hot guy in the crowd, who is an avid fan and had an amazing glam make-up. That was the guy who screamed loudly one time when the crowd was very quiet. Don’t know if smb caught it on the videos. It was fun to see Adam try to get another glimpse at the guy over people’s heads several times. I saw that he recognized some glamberts along the barrier. How does he do all that stuff and still manages not to sing a wrong note, nor go off key, nor lose the rhythm, tempo etc constantly amazes me. By comparison I could see how much Brian concentrates on playing the guitar same as Roger does and how many times the rest of the band and crew follow Brian’s and Adam’s lead. One has to feel the other people to be able to do that and trust that each member will play their parts. Its rare now days and its amazing. The funny thing at the end of the show was when Brian made Adam laugh during WATC.
We were lucky again during RGG. Not as many people held out their hands to give Adam “high-five” as I’ve seen at other shows. Thus both my sister and I touched his hand though I only touched his fingertips hahaha. It was great for our very first Adam and QAL concert!!!
We met up with marionm after the show and talked for a few more hours. It was good to just vent and chill with someone who understands the effect Adam has on smb the first time one sees him. We had to get up at 5 am next morning and I don’t think I could have slept if I didn’t get all those emotions out.
We flew from Vienna to Brussels and from there to Bologna. I don’t know why but the search didn’t show us that there was a direct flight on that day. Lucky us LOL though. On the flight from Brussels to Bologna the third seat in our row (the aisle seat) was occupied by non other than Shelley (shellstar79 on insta). She wore her Queen t-shirt and my sister didn’t even say hi but asked her straight away if she was flying to the Bologna concert too. I think the flight was about two hours but I honestly don’t remember when we took off or landed since we talked non-stop the whole flight. On top of that, the girl in the other aisle seat in the same row as us, was one of the fans who had the tix for the cancelled OAL 2015 in Brussels. She still hasn’t seen them live. We of course encouraged her to try it again.
Maybe we were the only transfer passengers on that flight cause the airline forgot our luggage in Brussels. So we arrived in Bologna with just our IDs, tixs and wallets. And we were left without all that stuff we wanted to wear, no make-up kit or nice shoes. Had it been on any other occasion I might have raged or cried or been simply annoyed as hell….but since I was still floating in the stratosphere after the Vienna concert I didn’t care There was a strike on the 10th too and public transportation didn’t go per schedule. Thus it would be impossible to get taxi with all those people going to the concert at the same time. We were prepared to walk. Our hotel was about 35-40 min walk from Unipol arena. The hotel was great and the staff was very helpful. We got everything we needed at the nearest mall and even more – shopping in Italy is always fun. What a great excuse to add to our wardrobe and get some new make-up
We were lucky that one bus line wasn’t fully cancelled so we waited for an hour for the bus. We met Shelly again in the queue. I knew Italian fans would be crazy since they do it at soccer matches and other concerts. The queue was insane. They were fully packed with no possibility to move an inch I think. It was really cold in the evening but no rain and fans were singing just to pass the hours. Queuing in Vienna had been so easy by comparison. The Italian fanclub also had a separate, priority entrance like they did in other years QAL was there and I felt a little pity for fans who were queuing so long at the general entrances.
We had the best sound and the best view of the whole spectacle, the amazing visuals, the whole stage. I watched the whole band this time since my eyes didn’t fix only on Adam. There were no sound problems at all and they were much more relaxed. From the tribune one can see the whole audience participate. I loved that moment when the fans (they obviously LOVE to sing in Italy) sang that part in Bicycle Race ahead of Adam. I was laughing so hard We could see him do all those funny dance moves He just owns the stage
I love that everyone in the band gets a moment to shine. One can’t see that when one is very close to the stage and its impossible to look away from Adam. We walked back to the hotel after the show and I was glad to chill in the night air. QAL was overwhelming and the energy was insane in Italy, all those crazy fans LOL.
The next day we decided to do a little sight-seeing and join the crowds waiting at the hotel. We missed Adam leaving though. I see some lucky fans got autographs in Bologna. We only got to see Brian leave the hotel. I think they were surprised by such a crowd. A photo was posted on Queen official twitter. That was at the main entrance. They didn’t show the other crowd at the other entrance of the hotel LOL. HAHAHAHA was so funny to see those groups of tourist trying to walk through the waiting crowds and everyone asking what was happening.
All these years of earning to see Adam and Queen live …they exceed my expectations The videos, no matter how good they are…it is not the same. They don’t do them justice. When the whole arena is filled-in by Adam’s voice and vibrates with that energy, with that great music, its pure magic.
I finally got those priceless memories and I’m glad to have met so many others who feel the same way.
Every time I close my eyes I still see Adam standing that close and nothing can put me in a bad mood. I’m still floating around in musical heaven Hopefully we get an Adam solo tour sometimes in the near future and hopefully he would still do M&G’s. We are already saving the money for the next shows
PS. Adam in Amsterdam was bound to be as crazy as it turned out to be. He just didn’t stop singing last night. All those runs and high notes hahahaha…I couldn’t get away from mixlr one moment from fear I would miss something. My sister listened it while at work and she didn’t give a damn what the supervisor would say if he caught her listening
Sorry to hear about your grandpa marionm
Sincerely you all who read my way-to- looonnngggg posts. Sorry about that.
