He can still do one offs. He has the distinct advantage of having his entire band living within 30 minutes of him and the Idol studio within 30 minutes of him and LAX within 30 minutes of him and.... should I go on?! LOL! I can come up with exactly ZERO drawbacks for Adam. I can come up with exactly ZERO drawbacks for Adam's fans. On balance this is all win. But there are always trade-offs when you make choices. In the cases of Adam on Idol -- they are minimal. The only one I can come up with is that he will need to start his tour later in the year. And as pointed out above, he can still do one-off concerts. All good. *** For some artists being an Idol judge would have drawbacks. For example, a major country artist would need to stop touring and visiting radio stations, and that could be an issue because country airplay and fanbases are built around the big tours. Or an artist like Gaga or Katy Perry who was making a ton a money touring and has lots of radio support and who risks being over-exposed. And some genres (like neo punk) are not compatible with Idol. And some artists do not have the skills to be good judges and likeable in that role. Adam is an adult pop artist, who is already associated with Idol, who is not at risk of over-exposure and who is really likeable as a personality. All win for him!

Tyler said that Aerosmith was not happy when he's joining Idol. HOWEVER, Aerosmith's happy when the sales of their album/singles increases by 200%. How was this hurting Steven Tyler and Aerosmith when sales increased by 200%?, I really don't understand the logic. Aerosmiths sales went from 1,000 to 2,000 units per week for a short period of time. Now he is touring which helps his sales. But going from 1,000 to 2,000 units per week isn't exactly out of this stratosphere. Tyler ended up in the long run hurting his image because he lost the legend status and he didn't come off to well on the show. He was considered a weak, out of touch judge. When he was first announced as a judge there was this "OMG, I can't believe they got Steven Tyler" Now, he lost that. Now he's a former reality show judge. To me it's the long run that counts not a short bump up in sales. Aerosmith made their newest CD before Idol not because of Idol. But this is all my opinion. Like I said I can plainly see I'm in the minority here and that's all good. Now to move onto another subject. I LOVE that pic of Adam and Sauli at Burning Man. I can't tell if Adam is looking up and grinning because of the person with the camera or he's trying to avoid sand in the wind. Sauli is looking down. You didn't read the MTV article. It said the sales increase to $2000 per week per album. How many album does Aerosmith have released?

If Tyler came across as a weak judge, that's his fault, but it still takes nothing away from his music career, in the past or in the future. There is no way Adam would be a weak judge and my guess is that he would use Idol in every way possible to further his personal music career and increase his celebrity status. Adam is smart like that!

Just a friendly mod reminder. Speculation about Idol, or the next single, or the September calendar etc is fine......provided you include facts/information/data that leads to your conclusion. Otherwise, it turns into hand wringing or puppies, unicorns and rainbows.
Also, it is fine to state your opinion about Adam's hair, clothing, eyes, make-up, etc., remembering opinions are personal. Everyone has one, and diversity makes the world more lively and interesting. Therefore, criticizing someone's opinion is contrary to the rules of ATop.
Whether you are expressing your opinion or speculating, once you have stated your case, please refrain from repeating it multiple times. We are a very smart bunch of folks, and we get it the first time (whether we agree with it or not.)
Thanks.

I think it hurt Xtina & Tyler. Not so much JLo because she was never taken seriously as a singer anyway.. Tyler lost a lot of cred amongst his fan base. He lost some in my eyes too. They start to lose credibility as singers and become TV personalities. I don't think Xtina will ever recover her singing career fully. Levine saves himself because he is part of a band. Tyler said that Aerosmith was not happy when he's joining Idol. HOWEVER, Aerosmith's happy when the sales of their album/singles increases by 200%. How was this hurting Steven Tyler and Aerosmith when sales increased by 200%?. The biggest problem was Steven did not even talk to the band about it -- they found out he was doing Idol from the internet -- while they were on tour. Financially it was good for Steven but not for the band: The sales increase was on a small base -- from 1,000 units a week to 2,000 units a week (see below -- this was Week 1 of Idol). Steven being on Idol, meant that Aerosmith could not do a major tour while he was doing the show. Their 2002 US tour total gross: $38,998,028 (#7 in US that year). 2007 they were the #14 grossing act in the world. Most of their tours are international so hard to find a gross but they fill arenas and very large venues all over the world. In 2011 - they did a short tour - only18 dates October - December during the Idol break. There is a lot of financial difference between a full world tour and 18 date mini tour. **** Hard for a big touring artists -- Bon Jovi, Gaga, Miranda Lambert, etc. to stop touring to do Idol. *** ETA: Because of the question about the 2,000 units upthread -- it is the entire catalog -- and sales increase was for week one of Idol. 'American Idol' Boosts Aerosmith Sales Sales up more than 250 percent since Steven Tyler joined judges' panel. In fact, according to Nielsen SoundScan, since the launch of the new season of "Idol" on January 19, the sales of Aerosmith's greatest-hits collections have gone up by more than 250 percent. Among the biggest gainers: 1994's Big Ones (up 260 percent after the debut week) and 2006's Devil's Got a New Disguise: The Very Best of Aerosmith (up 146 percent after week two). According to The Hollywood Reporter, two other greatest-hits compilations have spiked by 137 percent and 147 percent. Before the show premiered with Tyler taking his seat alongside fellow new judge Jennifer Lopez and returning veteran Randy Jackson, sales of the Aerosmith catalog were waning, moving less than 1,000 copies a week. So while the bump up to sales of more than 2,000 copies per album is impressive, it's still modest compared to such perennial catalog giants as Bob Marley & the Wailers' Legend, which was also up nearly 100 percent last week on sales of more than 7,000. Xtina had her flop before she became judge. Levine's music blew up after. Tyler's fans are all about cred and he hadn't made any music I heard since his daughter was in that movie. Adam came about because of a TV show and he's always embraced it. #itsnotgoodnews
Credibility among fans seems to depend on whether they think an artist is relevant. Also, fans will allow artists to experiment with their sound and will forgive one or two not-so-great releases, but too many misfires (especially consecutive ones) will hurt the artist's cred. If an artist hasn't made any new music recently (like Tyler) or if their latest offerings don't come across as current (Xtina), they lose cred. Artists who stay fresh and keep putting out good music retain their cred.
Let's take David Bowie as an example. He hasn't put out any new music in a LONG time, but still has plenty of cred because his old songs are considered classics. If he suddenly released a new album of quality songs, his cred would be enhanced. But if his new album was crap (and if he continued to release more stuff people weren't connecting with), his long-term reputation with fans would take a big hit.My point about Tyler and "cred" though is that cred seems to be more a rocker fan thing than a pop fan thing. Cred just doesn't fly around Disney stars so I also don't think that cred flies with Adam. He's not an indie, he's not a rocker, he's from idol, cred is not relevant to him.
