Let me clarify  : It was Richter 9 in the epicenter, about 300 kilometers deep in the groud away from Tokyo. System measures the energy that is released in earthquake. It tells nothing about how it feels let's say 200kms from it. Japan has their own way to express the magnitude (Shindo scale): It measures the implications of the eartquake in any given distance from the epicenter. They have scale 1-7, and March 2011 was 5+ in Tokyo area. Close to 6 in Northern parts of Tokyo area. This todays earthquake was "5 upper", meaning the same or more in Tokyo area: www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/20130225163330391-251623.htmland www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/20130225162815391-251623.htmlMeasuring the eartquakes is complicated, and there are several scales in use. Really complicated stuff, yeah.  But the earthquake's epicenter today was 124km away from Tokyo, while the one on March 2011 was farther (373 km away from Tokyo). So if the feeling over there was the same, the earthquake was still way less intense. Plus, the other one was also damaging because it lasted for 6 minutes. This one only lasted seconds. And today there wasn't a tsunami alert, the nuclear plants were fine and no incidents were reported. That's why I said this one was a pretty normal one in Japan. PMed you, by the way. lol |
