Are we ready to move on to the next song? Let's talk about the opening salvo: Now I'm Here
Structurally, this is an interesting song. What's the chorus? Where's the chorus? What's the hook? Where's the center? It starts out with what might be considered an introduction in the key of D major. the phrases are sung rather lightly: "Now I'm Here, think I'll stay around around around around. You won't see me. Now I'm here, now I'm there, I'm just a ............"
Then, it seems that the composer decided he didn't care for where it was going and tosses that idea aside, and starts again changing to the a hard rocking upbeat song, finishing the intro with "I'm just a new man, cuz you made me live again!" modulating the key to E major.
We then have what sounds like a verse. It sounds like it is leading to a chorus with "Don't I love her so, don't I love her so," but then the melody stops and changes to a guitar riff. Back to the verse, still no chorus, another extended guitar riff. After that, we pick up the second half of the verse theme and then the composer decides that maybe that original intro was kinda nice, stops all forward momentum in the song and goes all the way back to the beginning: "Now I'm here. Think I'll stay around around around around" Nah, He liked the hard rock better, and throws in one last guitar riff before suddenly ending it in the middle of things on an A major chord in the guitar. But, songs always resolve to end on the base chord of the key, so Brian adds an E major chord at the very end after the song really ended.
An interesting structure where the listener doesn't know where the song is going next.
As for Adam's performance, the range is from an F#3 on "NOW I'm here" up to a D5 on the final "around!" Very typical of Adam's range in a song. Nothing noteworthy. I liked how, at the beginning, before we see Adam, he sings the first line and floats the final two "around"s in his light head voice. It sounded magnificent that first night in Chicago. "Where is he? What was that????"
Later in the song, when Adam reprises that opening moment, he powers out the last two repetitions of "around" in full voice. Except for a couple of times, like here in Saskatoon.
So, what do you think of NIH? Is it a good opening for the show? A good introduction to Adam's voice for the newbies? What do you like about it? (Musically and vocally. The skin tight black leather goes in the PLUS column without saying!) Do you have a favorite performance?
