The rock band's new frontman well and truly converted Manchester into a city of Glamberts with this five-star performance

Queen blew our socks off with a special New Year's Eve show that well and truly established their new frontman Adam Lambert.
If people in the UK didn't know who Lambert was before the BBC concert, they were converted Glamberts by the end of the night.
It has been nearly a quarter of a century since the late great Freddie Mercury died but Queen has been reinvented again with an impressive new heir to the throne - American Idol runner-up Lambert – a fabulous, glamorous force of nature in skinny pants and a fantastic line in fingerless gloves and enviable eyeliner.
He isn't meant to be a Freddie clone. But here is a charismatic singer who performs and celebrates Queen's timeless back catalogue, including Another One Bites The Dust, Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottomed Girls, exactly the way they should be with added new electricity.
Legendary guitarist Brian May has claimed Lambert, who first sang with them on the American Idol final back in 2009, can sing even higher than Mercury could in a live situation and you feel Freddie would definitely have given his seal of approval. The 32-year-old American possesses a voice that reaches as high as his towering rhinestone-studded platform heels. He's a much better fit than previous frontman, Queen and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers.
Theatrical crowning moments arrive in a sublime Somebody to Love and Killer Queen – with Lambert seductively sprawled across a purple velvet chaise longue, spraying champagne from his mouth into the crowd. Guaranteed to blow your mind, indeed.
"We're in the presence of one of the greatest guitarists of all time," exclaims a woman behind me. And she isn't wrong.
Brian May and Roger Taylor showcase the talents that made them the rock gods that they are, Brian taking the spotlight for an acoustic set including a video screen duet with Freddie on Love of My Life and later a 10 minute guitar solo adventure.
Manchester bassist Neil Fairclough replaces John Deacon who retired in 1997 and Roger's son joins the fold to play throughout the concert on percussion, sometimes taking over the sticks from his dad.
Roger sings solo on These Are The Days as a video montage of Freddie plays behind him. And Freddie joins them again from the big screen to sing on the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Asked what they think of Lambert the crowd gives a standing ovation. A frontman fit for a Queen.

QUEEN + Adam Lambert

When I was told we were going to see Queen, I was pretty excited. As I imagine most people would be. When I was told that it was at the O2, I was a little bit hesitant. I may be in the minority, but often I feel that big arenas ruin music. I know they almost always ruin comedy (except this guy, he thrives in big arenas). Big outdoor arenas are different. Being at a festival is nothing like being in the O2, the vibe is completely different, often people have had at least a day of live music already and are brimming with sex drugs and rock and roll. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
Ok, so enough negativity. Let’s get on with an actual review of the show. We arrived early, and our three hours of queuing paid off, as we got a nice position at the end of the catwalk (which, for some reason was a weird bendy shape). Queen had no support act, which was actually a nice change. I mean, I like the idea of support acts, and often it gives you a chance to see some talented people – like these guys who toured with Paolo Nutini for a bit. But now and again, it is just nice to turn up and see the band you’ve paid to see.
It’s at this point I’ll mention that I’ve actually seen these guys before (unfortunately, still without Freddie – and though he died before I was born, so for me to see them with him would mean some serious wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff). I saw Queen with Adam Lambert at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2011, which was, if I’m not mistaken, their first tour together. Hence the smaller arena. the Hammersmith holds around 5000 max, contrasting with the 20,000 that can be squeezed into the O2.
The band ‘Queen + Adam Lambert’ consists of Brian May and Roger Taylor, the original guitarist and drummer respectively. Taylor’s son Rufus on drums, Spike Edney on keys, and Neil Fairclough on bass. Edney has been referred to as the ‘fifth member of Queen’ due to his extensive work with the band, which is pretty cool, because it means the only members the band are really missing are John Deacon and the one and only, Freddie Mercury.
It’s no secret that Adam Lambert has big boots to fill, being the new front man of Queen. I said this the first time I saw them, and my feelings where solidified on seeing them again, he’s not a replacement for Freddie. Yes, he’s doing Freddie’s job, yes, he’s doing it well, but in no way does it feel like he’s replacing him.
While on stage, all members are given a moment in the spotlight. During the show Lambert left for a couple of songs, which gave the rest of the band to move their equipment to the end of the catwalk, and do a couple of songs together, which almost had an acoustic feel to it, which gave a new dimension to the evening. Roger and Rufus had a drum battle, and then there was a bass battle, which, instead of being torturous and boring as drum solos often are, was actually good to listen to. The whole band left the stage at the start of Bohemian Rhapsody and let a recording of Freddie sing it on one of the big screens, which I thought was very touching. They also played some of Freddie’s vocals behind Brian May as he was singing Love of My Life.
Side note, I’d never really realised how much other band members are effected when a member dies. I mean, thankfully, all the modern bands I like have never lost a member, and all the older bands lost their members before I was even born, so it had always been the status quo that Freddie, Strummer, Lennon and Kobain were dead. But when I saw Brian May do a solo acoustic set in the middle of the Queen + Lambert gig in 2011, it hit me how much it would effect the rest of a band. You live with them while you’re on the road, you socialise with them, you open yourself up to them artistically, they get to see you at your worst and your best. Losing someone like that has got to hit you hard. He played The Show Must Go On, it was surprisingly emotional.
Anyway, back to the gig. Though Lambert left for a couple of songs he in no way was shy of the spot light. For Killer Queen he had a chaise longue brought to the end of the catwalk and sung the song while lying on it, which was a great touch.
At the end of the day, the set the played was fantastic, they honored Mercury, and gave every member a chance to shine – and oh, how they shone. They even manged to hype up the crowd, which isn’t an easy task when there’s 6 of you 20,000 of them, it’s your second night at that arena AND it’s a Sunday. So I’m glad I went, and would whole heartedily reccomend you go and see them before you die (or they do, for that matter).
Here are some photos.

Gig review: Queen and Adam Lambert at First Direct Arena, Leeds
by Anthony Longstaff
Published on the 22 January 2015 16:22
Let’s get straight to the point – Adam Lambert has some very big boots to fill. The merest mention of going to see Queen in concert and the comparisons start.
No one will ever replace Freddie Mercury and I’d be pretty fair in thinking that neither Queen nor Adam Lambert are out to change that. However, the haters will hate.
My own opinion is that Freddie Mercury effectively was Queen and when he passed away Queen went with him. Should Brian May and Roger Taylor continue under the old banner? That’s an opinion that you can draw your own conclusions on.
Certainly their back catalogue is vast, though I bet that there probably isn’t a Queen track which you could consider ‘unknown’. For this reason the world can continue to listen to and enjoy the brand.
Current frontman Adam Lambert is a very talented guy. A runner-up in America’s biggest TV talent show and a gifted songwriter in his own right, he has penned some acclaimed music and is now stepping into one of the largest voids in music history.
He does his best to fill it with a stage presence that is second to none. His voice is technically brilliant and although those Mercury boots will never fit him – nor anyone else – he may have just stamped his own size 10’s for a lot of other people to try and follow.
This gig at Leeds’s First Direct Arena is massive, one of the biggest probably in the region for a long time. Part of a the tour that is continuing to roll across the globe, it’s a colossal production of mammoth staging and and a dazzling light spectacular throughout the set.
The set list contains pretty much Queen’s greatest hits – One Vision, Another One Bites the Dust, Who Wants to Live Forever, Under Pressure and Bohemain Rhapsody are all present and impressively correct – legendary guitarist Brian May has a solo spot and there are little surprises along the way from a gospel choir and sticksman Roger Taylor’s own ‘drum off’.
For Queen devotees, it’s all you could have asked for – even if it was without the great Freddie Mercury himself.
