WFLZ just played GhostTown at 5:35pm wish they had gotten on the wagon sooner but it was great to finally hear it on the radio. I don't listen to radio as I don't have one in the van at work. But for WWFM Orlando didn't get on board until it was well into top 20 but played it regularly LONG after it was off the charts.

Looking back over GT's run I think it has more in common with IIHY than with WWFM. WWFM had heavy support early on from big stations like Z100 who was way out in front on spins and the rest of the pack played catch up which was why by the time the Cumulus block added at the end Z100 & the other early supporters were done and had to move on. On the other hand IIHY started out slower and with mostly smaller stations and grew as he did promo along with the tour. The big stations didn't get in on the act until later and it was a smoother more organic run.
I feel that whatever pushing WBR did for this song was more along the lines of just give this a chance rather than trying to get heavy support. I feel like they really did let this grow pretty organically with a few nudges here and there later on in the game. I am really curious to see how ALN goes. GT's sales were really pretty steady and showed response to radio play as it increased and even though the sales weren't huge I think the steadiness is impressive. I don't think the video did as well as it's sales have been highly eratic and I would bet that there was no push to VH1 to get better ranking there as the sales seemed to not correlate at all to what was happening on the countdown.
It also seemed to me that while there was a certain amount of promo that was scheduled ahead of the single drop, it seemed that a lot more radio promo got added after the initial response to the single. I feel like WBR was smart and rather than doing a lot of pushing they just made plan that was flexible enough to respond to where the song was connecting. I always felt like RCA laid out their whole plan ahead of time and just carried on with it without ever making adjustments along the way and in this day and age that just doesn't really work. All thru this run we have seen that they focused more promo towards areas that the song was connecting in and while the fans may have been disappointed in the UK response I was glad to see that rather than push where it wasn't catching on they went with the flow. They did get a top 10 album debut which leaves an impression of him as a building artist there rather than trying to push a single that didn't appear to be working and have an image of a flop song.
I see a lot of complaints that most of the magazine stuff has been in the UK and a bunch of niche magazines but I think that has been one of the smartest things about promo and harkens back to the way DMG built Katy Perry. They said that they focused on getting her out in front of as many eyes as possible. Most people think that means wide distribution/broad appeal things but targeting a lot of niche audiences actually gets deeper than the broad appeal stuff. You don't get the attention of the taste makers and trend setters by only targeting mass market.
Lastly I think fans tend to forget that promo by its very nature is not for them. It's for the people who haven't been paying attention. Touring is for fans. Promo is advertising which is intended to increase the consumer base and touring is sales which is servicing the existing consumer base.

Excellent summary, rihannsu. I think DMG and WBR have done a fantastic job for GT, and I'm sure they have ALN promo all ready to go. Should be very interesting.

Another Lonely Night is #46 in Music in Poland and #16 in Pop, so why is it sometimes on Kworb's chart and sometimes not?
