I would love to know how others interpret "There I Said It."
I tend to think Adam is mostly singing about one thing and that there are other levels, ways it can be understood, too, but just when I think he is singing mostly about a personal relationship, there's a word or phrase that makes me think "no, he is mostly singing about . . ." and THEN there's another word or phrase and I think,"no, it's neither of those, it's . . ."
I tend to think it's likely mostly about a personal relationship but then I think, who the hell's SHADOW would Adam have ever been in?
So then I think it's likely mostly about career "money people" because I can see how, if I were Adam - as talented, gorgeous, talented, sexy/cute, talented, nice, talented, etc. as he is, and still be told, "sorry, not quite marketable enough for this or that" - I might want to say someththing.
Anyone else thinking about these lyrics? Care to share?
ETA - I have read other stuff online but it was more about the musicality of the song, technicality of the singing, than lyrics.

I seem to remember Adam saying in an interview (can't recall which one) that TISI is about relationship with his fans...it was a surprising "revelation" TBH...TO ME it sounds as "business" related , so I totally agree with your interpretation...and I doubt it's about personal relationship(s)...whatever the real root cause -I feel his pain, but I also think he is in a much better place now...

Thank you , Nica. Whoa - that is interesting. I have read other posts that said that but I did not realize Adam had said it. Okay, now I have to mull that over

I always thought he could be writing from someone else's perception. So relationship but how the other person was feeling.

I think it is about all of the above. It may have started with a preliminary context, but as the writing process continued a line about something else but with the same general intent, I'm done apologizing, was added and then another and then another. As Adam has also said, the album is about what in general he is feeling now, but the lyrics were kept intentionally ambiguous so that listeners could apply it more specifically to their own lives.

I've thought about that too, Jablea, because to me - rabid fan - I would think Adam is the one with a big shadow (I thought Sauli, tbh - my mind just tries to fill in blanks, I can't help it, it craves "story").
ETA: "Intentionally ambiguous" is frustrating sometimes . . . But, okay, I will think about that one and about applying it to my own life since that is part of Adam's intention . . . Frankly, I often find truly expressing myself is very fraught with pitfalls :/
It really takes fearlessness sometimes, the consequences of honesty can be more than you want to deal with (has that happened to Adam?) - by the end of the song, is there a sense that he's GLAD he said "it" or just that he has "said it"?
Thank you for the replies. (It is one of the "deeper" TOH tracks, it seems, so I like thinking/reading about it.)
