It's no coincidence that the strongest songs on the album. Trespassing, Naked Love, Cuckoo. Were all written by Adam. I wonder how different it would of been if he released Trespassing with WB. I agree though I don't blame RCA. 19 E had a bigger part. RCA just struggled to market someone like Adam. From what I hear though RCA tend to stifle their artists. I think not Naked Love - Benny Blanco and crowd? eta: So endeth the Trespassing Memorial Day but I guess timely as we approach the 3rd anniversary of BTIKM. On to the future in which I hope to see a robust U.S. tour materialize with all the bells and whistles Adam wants.

But Uptown Funk is 2015. And the Robin Thicke thing hit in 2014? Or late 2013? Shady was at least a year ahead of its time. Unfortunately. I don't think "Shady" would have been a hit single in 2012, 2013, 2014 or 2015. The live performance is fun, it is an excellent album track, but nothing indicates it is anything more than a fan favorite. If it was something more (like Cuckoo and Runnin') it would have more streams and more iTunes sales. Here are the US iTunes numbers for "Shady": It is not in the Top 100 Adam tracks on iTunes (based on popularity bars). It is the #8 of 15 tracks on the Trespassing Deluxe Album (based on popularity bars). [It is close to tied with PTL.] Non-singles that are above it in sales: Cuckoo, Runnin', OOL, Underneath -- plus the 3 singles BTIKM, NCOE, Trespassing. I sort of wish I had not looked. My personal favorite track from the album is #15 -- the other Lambert-Mendez-Sparro collaboration, "Broken English." I am probably the only one here who loves that song and plays it regularly. You're not the only one. I love Broken English. And Chokehold. But I'm still a #Shadybert. The TP album is loaded with stellar songs. Hopefully some time in history it will get the recognition it deserves.

I am just curious -- what circa 2013 radio format do the "Shady-should-have-been-a-radio-single" think "Shady" actually belonged on? I would file that one with "Sleepwalker" -- fan fav that was not suitable for radio. Singles are a matter of timing. Trespassing had very radio-friendly tracks -- none released as singles -- for example: "Cuckoo" and "Naked Love." Biggest missed opportunity from Trespassing -- IMHO -- was "Runnin'." Look at the iTunes history and streaming data -- continues to be popular even now. And it was a bonus track!! Didn't Adam himself admit that he fu**ed up with Runnin? He made it a bonus track as he "didn't like it". Hard to believe. He did say he f'dup with it being a bonus track, I don't recall him ever given a reason though. I always thought it was the song pushed off to make room for the BMars track.

I wish I could pull up the interview, but I clearly remember that at least once he said that he didn't like Runnin that much. Can't quite recall the exact context. He was definitely surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the song.

Maybe that contributed to him working on his lower register?

There's something sinuous about the melody and his wailing that makes me shiver and wriggle. In a very, very nice way. :D
