Books, I love that gif. On a more optimistic note, isn't Shady wonderful with this band, especially Darwin the bass player. It is finally living up to its potential live. I love it. Kicking In would sound great too! It was always missing that distinctive bass beat in the earlier performances of it imo..

I would say the same one that made Uptown Funk such a colossal hit. But Uptown Funk is 2015. And the Robin Thicke thing hit in 2014? Or late 2013? Shady was at least a year ahead of its time. Unfortunately. Since it was never released or pushed to the public, we really don't know that it was ahead of its time. The R.Thicke song was out and struggling A bit before The Voice performance in midJune 2013 that propelled it into the public conscience. Add Daft Punk's Get Lucky (4/2013 release) and then Uptown Funk in 11/2014 capitalized on that momentum. FUnoballsRCA

I am just curious -- what circa 2013 radio format do the "Shady-should-have-been-a-radio-single" think "Shady" actually belonged on? I would file that one with "Sleepwalker" -- fan fav that was not suitable for radio. Singles are a matter of timing. Trespassing had very radio-friendly tracks -- none released as singles -- for example: "Cuckoo" and "Naked Love." Biggest missed opportunity from Trespassing -- IMHO -- was "Runnin'." Look at the iTunes history and streaming data -- continues to be popular even now. And it was a bonus track!! I would say the same one that made Uptown Funk such a colossal hit. That would be Spotify and iTunes. Uptown Funk was a streaming media and sales hit first, then moved to radio after 3 weeks of substantial sales and huge streaming numbers. Even today -- this song is much bigger on streaming media than radio. From Wiki -- "On the Billboard Hot 100, the song debuted at number 65 on the week-ending 21 November 2014 due to digital downloads sold, making it Ronson's first entry on the Hot 100. During its second week, "Uptown Funk" sold 110,000 digital copies, becoming the Hot 100's top Digital Gainer of the week, and nearing Streaming Songs with a gain of 2.5 million US streams. The song rose to number 18 in its second week on the Hot 100. On its third week the song rose to number eight, after its first full seven-day tracking period after the premiere of the music video, with 4.4 million streams, digital sales of 167,000 copies and debuting at Radio Songs at number 46.
UF is an upbeat, funk-soul dance song -- based on the Minneapolis Groove (derived from Prince's 1980's music), layered on top of a P-Funk melody, and then it has that super-cool EDM twist by Mark Ronson that made it current and new at the same time. This hit, that ice cold Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold This one for them hood girls Them good girls straight masterpieces Stylin', whilen, livin' it up in the city Got Chucks on with Saint Laurent Got kiss myself, I'm so pretty
I'm too hot (hot damn) Called a police and a fireman I'm too hot (hot damn) Make a dragon wanna retire man I'm too hot (hot damn) Say my name you know who I am I'm too hot (hot damn) Am I bad 'bout that money, break it down
Girls hit your hallelujah (whoo) Girls hit your hallelujah (whoo) Girls hit your hallelujah (whoo) 'Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you 'Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you 'Cause uptown funk gon' give it to you Saturday night and we in the spot Don't believe me just watch (come on)From Wiki -- "According to Billboard writer Sean Ross, the song is widely influenced by funk artists and their songs. This includes Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce", One Way's "Cutie Pie", The Gap Band's "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops Up Side Your Head)" and "Early in the Morning", Earth, Wind & Fire's "Getaway", The Sequence's "Funk You Up", The Sugarhill Gang's "Apache", George Kranz's "Trommeltanz (Din Daa Daa)" and The Time's "Cool" and "Jungle Love". The only song specifically credited on "Uptown Funk" is Trinidad James' 2012 top 10 R&B and rap hit "All Gold Everything". However, many of the songs cited "were released during the worst period of a 'disco backlash' that effectively kept all types of black music, not just disco, off of top 40", while "Uptown Funk" received instant airplay at top 40 radio." "Shady" is completely different -- it is not a dance track, it is not EDM, it is not upbeat -- in fact it is dark. The only similarity is Niles also added a funk baseline on both songs. And it is not very popular -- it only has 1.5 million Spotify plays. I can't see a 18 year old girl riding in her car, listen to the radio on her way home from work or school want to sing along to "Shady." Baby, I'm on the hunt Baby, I got my target on you Trouble, that's what I want And I'm gonna do Just what I have to Get your ass down to the front Go on and roll it out, I dare you Sorry I'm kinda drunk But did you just say your game was brand new
No, I ain't broken, but I need a fix That satisfaction when I, I get my kicks I'm up all night, I'm outta sight Don't turn on the light 'Cause I'm feeling so shady lately Come on and take me underground Deep under the street Come on and take me, take me down Where freaks like us can meet"Shady" was never intended for and was not written for pop radio. It was not even one of the four tracks they tested for single #2 which included Adam's picks: Cuckoo, Naked Love, Trespassing and NCOE. NCOE was the only track that had any interest from radio programmers and that was partly because Bruno Mars wrote it -- and he was the biggest artist in the world in 2013-2014. ** It is easy to blame "radio" and the "label" for Adam's lack of a hit from Trespassing but "Uptown Funk" proves that with streaming media and on demand music and digital access to everything -- the "audience" is more often than not the one who is picking the hits. And music listeners picked "Uptown Funk." ** ETA: A couple more thoughts... 1. ComplexityI have more more comment about "Shady" and its complexity. I found this explanation on a songwriting website. Perhaps it will make more sense than my rambling post. No matter what genre you write in, repetition is a key ingredient in the success of most songs. It’s one of the things songwriters struggle to get into a proper balance. Too much repetition can bore an audience, but not enough has the exact same effect on a listener: boredom. Without things repeating, it’s information overload, as the listener feels as though they’re on a seemingly never-ending journey of new melodies. Repetition of melodic fragments puts the audience at ease. And there are several ways this can be done.Link: www.secretsofsongwriting.com/2012/02/28/repetition-and-the-structure-of-good-melodies/This is where die-hard fans and casual fans separate. I have probably listened to "Shady" 300 times -- a casual fan may have heard it once or twice. So the complexity works for me and keeps it interesting, but is a barrier to a casual listener. 2. "Shady" is really not a dance track. Dance tracks are usually at least 120 BPM (Beats Per Minute)."Shady" is 100 BPM. About the same as WWFM (98). For comparison, Rolling In The Deep 105 BPM. RITD is not a dance track. Lady GaGa, Alejandro 100 BPM. The average current pop song is 120 BPM. "Ghost Town" is 120 BPM. ALN is 120 BPM. TOH is 123 BPM. Adele, Rumour Has It, 120 BPM. Robin Thicke, Blurred Lines 120 BPM. (The pop standard for tempo has been 120 BPM since the 1970's - blame disco and electronic drums which default to 2 beats a second = 120 BPM.) There are two big recent exceptions to the 120 BPS standard -- "Uptown Funk" is unusual because it is slightly slower than most of the songs on pop radio -- 115 BPM -- that makes it distinctive. Daft Punk "Get Lucky" is also slightly slower than average -- 116 BPM.

Yup - I was worried when I bought my ticket for Buffalo that it might be a bad drive from Toronto to Buffalo but no snow in sight ! Weather channel shows upper 40's for a low and good chance of rain, that is cold for us sunbelt folks. That's down right balmy for us in the north - I'll take the rain over snow any day. This time last year Buffalo was closed down due to record breaking snowfall

luckily NYC is having record high temps lately... 55 to 62 F (12 -16 C) which is unheard of for mid Dec... so no "brrrrr" here But Buffalo!
Buffalo will have a high of 59 degrees on Sunday and 61 on Monday. On Monday Buffalo will be hotter than Los Angeles. I live in Akron, OH -- we should have snow on the ground and people are still having to move their lawns -- our highs over the weekend will be 68 to 72 degrees. The trees are all confused and some still have leaves -- we have not had a real freeze yet.
