I read a snarky review that basically criticized QAL for being too perfect. Too polished. Too rehearsed. They called it "Queen - The Musical" I thought, "And this is a bad thing?" Kinda like the reviewer last tour saying the vocal harmonies could not be live because they were too good.
No, it is not just a rock concert. It's Queen. That means it is a show! Or it should be. That is what they are known for. (And, what was lacking with Paul Rodgers, IMO.)
It got me thinking, as I listened/watched tonight. There are a lot of tribute bands making the rounds with the baby boomers turned seniors. And there are many stars and bands of yesteryear touring again. Trying to capture the spirit of days gone by, but they tend to be a bit creaky with age. Voices are blown or severely limited, chops are rusty due to arthritic hands. They are still in large demand, but the best of their glory days are in the rearview mirror.
Queen, on the other hand, is reaching new heights in their performance, their sound, their presentation, their spectacle. They are performing at a higher level than ever, they say. I can't argue, as it sure looks and sounds that way. What a heady, surrealistic experience it must be for Brian and Roger (and Spike) to live in this rarefied creative ether at this time in their lives.
It has been a wonderful (and profitable) experience for Adam. But, the same can also be said of Brian and Roger.
