Joseph Lusk has an incredible voice, I will be surprised if he doesn't win American Idol.

I'm sorry all the Jacob Lusk fans, I think he sings slightly out of tune on a lot of notes. Also, I find the timbre of his voice to be very uneven throughout his range, so not to my liking.
ETA: It also seems like many of the guys are in a "how high can I sing contest" (maybe spurred on by Adam).

I hope Adam is still watching because I think the rest of the evening delivered what he asked for. The first four guys were indeed utterly forgettable, for me - gone, gone, gone, and gone, I would guess. But James Durbin - he'll be sticking around a while, which is gonna be interesting for Adam fans. He's much better than I expected. Jacob Lusk is kinda phenomenal - they just called him the next Luther Vandross! Paul McDonald is a cool, hip, good-looking natural (with an awesome jacket tonight), and Scotty does what he does pretty well (although I thought he might fall right off his stool if he leaned any further to one side while making those faces). And then there's Casey who is all kinds of nerdy, jazzy, hip. After that, it's toss-up for me between Robbie the crooner and Brett the oddish one to round out the six boys (if that's how they're doing it this year, I don't know).
And I would have posted this on a rather popular AI site, except I can't get through due to traffic, which bodes well for this AI season, so far, I think.
The fact that James Durbin referenced Adam (saying he wanted to go for the high notes like Adam Lambert and singing "Change is Gonna Come" in Hollywood) doesn't bother me at all. If anything, I see it as complimentary to Adam. And I think James is himself - he happens to like those classic rock songs (and leather and hang-y tail things), like Adam did. I suspect we won't be seeing much glam from James, though. I've read "poor man's Adam Lambert" - and that makes me think of Dusty Madrid!

So I tuned in after seeing Adam's tweet and when I heard James D. sing my first thought was that it sounded like there was some kind of special effects on the mic. Cassie, Kandie? Am I just being crazy or could this be part of the new more polished Idol?
It's also interesting to see everyone working the stage and getting the "Adam" treatment with stage production. They are all getting coached this year and Adam still worked the stage and had cooler production without all the help. I liked Casey the best so far but missed everyone before James.
I'm missing Simon too, some of those performances needed a dose of reality, the judges are over praising mediocre performances, and failing to call out bad ones.

Yup, Adam broke Idol for me, but I think his ghost is inspiring this crop of singers. Overall, more good voices than last year and probably several previous years. We didn't have one WGWG this evening. We also didn't have the jeans and flannel. The guys seemed to put thought into what they were wearing. And several did a good job of working the stage and the audience rather than just standing and singing.
Vocally is where I say that Adam broke Idol --- for me. I listened to the guys, noted some had very nice voices, but couldn't help thinking, "Nope, not as good, not as pleasant, not as controlled and masterful as Adam." (And, yes, I know I was the one preaching "Don't compare anyone to Adam!" But couldn't help it, myself.) Of course, I knew going in they wouldn't be as good as Adam. Still, flashes of Adam on Idol kept playing in my mind.
As for who I liked, Lusk has a very soulful voice and delivery. I like his gospel/blues interpretations. He's generally got good control of his voice. But, the end spoiled it for me --- too dramatic, too many runs, too much embellishment that the song didn't need. I will also have to listen to him all season with my eyes closed, as his mannerisms interfere with his delivery.
Casey --- the man has music in him. Lots of sophistication. That song, tho, I didn't like. Nor the persona. But, at least he made it his own. Wanna see him sing something different next week.
James sounded better than he has in other segments. Had more control. But, I don't like the sound of his voice. It is shrill and brittle to me. And the stage persona --- just no.
The one I actually liked the best was the country guy. And I really don't like country music. But, he nailed it. Sounded like someone who had been a country star for years. Perfect sound for that song, and delivered authentically. Wonder if he can do anything outside his genre?
All in all, they chose some good talent this year. But, none made me want to tune in next week just to hear them sing -- like Adam did from audition on. Frankly, I was kinda bored, and fast forwarded thru about half the performances. Yup, Adam ruined Idol for me.
Q3, sorry to put this on the daily thread but I couldn't find where you posted the Idol thread. Feel free to move it.

Am I just being crazy? Unfortunately I am at work, and will have to watch the DVR later, so I can't chime in on the effects on the mic. :-/

Okay, been out of lurking for a couple days--what Adam tweet? Did he comment on James Durbin. I don't want to criticize a guy who has a condition, but after liking him a lot at first, I'm finding that he does fall short of the Adamness quotient. So, did Adam Tweet about James? Cassie, pretty much agree with everything you said!! Actually, a pretty decent crop of male talent here, but no one with the total package of vocal prowess and control, stage presence, and audience connection. Oh yeah--and no one is close to as beautiful as BB Yup, Adam broke Idol for me, but I think his ghost is inspiring this crop of singers.
