Yup, Adam broke Idol for me, but I think his ghost is inspiring this crop of singers. Overall, more good voices than last year and probably several previous years. We didn't have one WGWG this evening. We also didn't have the jeans and flannel. The guys seemed to put thought into what they were wearing. And several did a good job of working the stage and the audience rather than just standing and singing.
Vocally is where I say that Adam broke Idol --- for me. I listened to the guys, noted some had very nice voices, but couldn't help thinking, "Nope, not as good, not as pleasant, not as controlled and masterful as Adam." (And, yes, I know I was the one preaching "Don't compare anyone to Adam!" But couldn't help it, myself.) Of course, I knew going in they wouldn't be as good as Adam. Still, flashes of Adam on Idol kept playing in my mind.
As for who I liked, Lusk has a very soulful voice and delivery. I like his gospel/blues interpretations. He's generally got good control of his voice. But, the end spoiled it for me --- too dramatic, too many runs, too much embellishment that the song didn't need. I will also have to listen to him all season with my eyes closed, as his mannerisms interfere with his delivery.
Casey --- the man has music in him. Lots of sophistication. That song, tho, I didn't like. Nor the persona. But, at least he made it his own. Wanna see him sing something different next week.
James sounded better than he has in other segments. Had more control. But, I don't like the sound of his voice. It is shrill and brittle to me. And the stage persona --- just no.
The one I actually liked the best was the country guy. And I really don't like country music. But, he nailed it. Sounded like someone who had been a country star for years. Perfect sound for that song, and delivered authentically. Wonder if he can do anything outside his genre?
All in all, they chose some good talent this year. But, none made me want to tune in next week just to hear them sing -- like Adam did from audition on. Frankly, I was kinda bored, and fast forwarded thru about half the performances. Yup, Adam ruined Idol for me.
Q3, sorry to put this on the daily thread but I couldn't find where you posted the Idol thread. Feel free to move it.
