Yes, that's what Adam said and I believe him. But IMO for those who don't analyze lyrics and just enjoy songs (non stans) it would sound like it is about dancing & clubbing! He probably did that intentionally so it wouldn't be "the gay guy out looking for sex." ITA, mys*&@^#r, and that's why Shady could easily be a kick-ass single!!! On the surface, there's nothing about the lyrics that will cause mass pearl clutching. THIS COULD BE THE BEST SINGLE EVAH!!!!!!!!!! Now that I've spent a couple days digesting all this FABULOUS new music, I totally agree with you. I think Shady could be a big hit. It might have become my favorite song on the album....today.

I have avoided theatre more than 20 years because I don't want to listen the actors sing badly (would prefer singers sing) and because of the exaggerated body language used on stage especially regarding sex like they think audience is stupid (overdoing it is often comical which might not be the intention of the scene). This avoidance surely have cost me some beautiful experiences in the process. There is a thin line with theatricality according the recipient's tolerance level - and it seems that I am on the more sensitive side in this respect. On the other hand, with music my tolerance level seems to be higher.
Thinking of Adam's performances in Idols I think he overdid some of it. But still "If I can't have you" was the song where I did not mind the theatricality at all, also "Feeling good" resonated well with me. I do remember when some of the judges later stated that they could have done with a little less tongue showing - and I do agree. Normally you don't have to do any of it every week.
I think that all the expressions have to be substantiated with the actual singing performance - if the singing itself conveys strong feelings then it can be ornated with strong expressions and it doesn't feel like cheating. Big gestures are awful if the singing doesn't back it up - with Adam that is not a problem. However, I try to understand the singer, too. For him, sometimes the expressions and gestures help to get the interpretation and the feelings out - in a way making the singing better. In Idols he was competing and needed to convince everybody. Later on in his performances (that I have seen on YT) I haven't seen that need that much.
This discussion, if I remember correctly, was about "Underneath". The song is about pain etc. and if he ever feels the need to use strong facial expressions to get the point across or to ameliorate his interpretation, I will gladly grant him that right. I hope he is able to do it with less fanfare in most of the songs but this one is such a beast that it will be ok.

Would you believe I forgot to ask which date it was but I think based on people being there it is the 12th. I really need to go to bed It is almost 1.30 and I am so tired. ;D

Just logged in and it was funny to read the whole ma'am discussion because I've been having this debate with my hubby for years. I'm #teamma'am and he's #teammiss, and for what it's worth I'm from the South (sorta--born and raised but my parents were imposters ;D) and he's from the North. But I'm not sure that's the relevant factor. Here's my argument in favor of ma'am:
To me, "miss" sounds patronizing unless it's being used for a little girl. The term annoys me because it carries connotations of marital status, which I find entirely irrelevant and also lacking in parity with the far more open male equivalent of sir. Try translating "miss" into other languages--say, "señorita" in Spanish or "fräulein" in German, and you'll see what I mean. When guys call "excuse me, miss" after waitresses in restaurants, north or south, it always makes me cringe because there's something so paternalistic about it to me. "Excuse me, ma'am" seems so much more respectful to me because it treats the other person as an adult and makes no assumptions. And, for what it's worth (and maybe this is where the southern background does come in) I've been ma'am'ed since I was quite young, so it carries no negative age connotations for me.
BUT: my husband told me that in his experience people preferred "miss" because it sounded younger (lets not even get into that whole ageist kettle of fish--we've been there many times before!). I scoffed at him in all my feminist indignation, only to be there when he was told by a lady he politely ma'am'ed under my instructions: "Do I look old enough to ma'am to you?" Which kinda won the argument for him, I guess. But I stick by my instincts that ma'am is more respectful and equitable than miss, and personally far prefer to be ma'am'ed. (Also prefer it to "hey you!" but that might be the southerner in me ;D.)
Oh, and Durberville--don't sneak away--you expressed my reaction to that Fierce Mama song perfectly, so you are not alone!!! But then, I'm not a mama, fierce or otherwise...so the rest of you, enjoy!!!
