It's possible Adam Lambert views his latest triumph as a double-edged sword. Last month, his second album, Trespassing, entered the US Billboard charts at No 1. The Hollywood Reporter noted a remarkable first about this: by displacing Carrie Underwood, Lambert had ensured that American Idol contestants had succeeded each other at No 1.

That wasn't what everyone else was talking about, though. Elsewhere, the headlines were all about Lambert being the first openly gay artist to go straight into the Billboard charts at the top. Although the coverage stopped short of suggesting this was an achievement on a par with the discovery of penicillin, there was an unmistakable sense that Lambert's name must always come with a sexuality-defining adjective. It's something he's growing tired of.
"Sexuality is a hot topic," he says on the phone from the US, "so there's a natural interest. But the interest comes predominantly from the media. I've done lots of interviews and often that is the pinnacle of the article, or the headline, or the main angle."
Actually, Lambert's sexuality is far from the most interesting thing about him. Despite his break coming via Simon Cowell's US show, he's a long way from the TV production line template. His music is much nearer the Girls Aloud end of the reality spectrum than One True Voice territory, and his voice is genuinely powerful. There are some delightful facts about him, too: in his pre-fame days, he played Joshua in The Ten Commandments musical, appearing alongside Val Kilmer as Moses.
He even has his own creation myth: that his decision to enter the 2009 American Idol came after necking lots of hallucinogens at Burning Man, the Nevada desert arts festival. "That's how a certain publication decided to tell the story," he says, meaning Rolling Stone. "I found it quite amusing. But I guarantee I was not tripping out in the desert thinking about American Idol. I was at this arts festival and came to a conclusion that, if I wanted to achieve certain dreams, I had to go for it. So when I got home, I started a lot of projects, and a couple of months later I heard there was an Idol audition. I was going along with that philosophy of, 'Don't wait for it to happen to you – you've got to go for it.' But it is a good story. And the journalist who did that story was really lovely. So I get it."
Nevertheless, he was still, as he has put it, "a 27-year-old white gay guy in makeup and heels" when he entered the show, far from the model Idol. Then, when his sexuality became public knowledge during the series, a furore erupted, including a discussion on Fox's politics chat show The O'Reilly Factor.
"I figured it wasn't an option to keep anything a secret," Lambert says. "I've lived openly and comfortably my whole life. If I were to hide something like that, it wouldn't have stayed hidden. And it's just not my style. I'm a very open book. But also, I understand the reluctance for people in the public eye to come out of the closet, because all of a sudden that's what it's all about – and it can easily overshadow whatever else you're in the public eye for."
Lambert's first album, For Your Entertainment, reached No 3 in the US charts in 2009, and was a happy experience. One of the things about the reality show system, he says, is that "people perceive it to be about a svengali taking someone and plugging them into all this stuff and here's an album. Don't get me wrong. There was a lot of help involved, and there were a lot of songwriters involved, but I was making decisions: I like that song or I don't like that song. I wasn't being told what to do every step. I wasn't being controlled in that manner on the show, either."
Then came Queen. Lambert had attracted the attention of Brian May and Roger Taylor during American Idol. He'd auditioned with Bohemian Rhapsody, and May and Taylor joined him to perform We Are the Champions in the final. Earlier this year, it was announced that Queen and Lambert would headline the Sonisphere heavy metal festival at Knebworth. Although the festival was cancelled (possibly to Lambert's good fortune, for a field of drunk metal fans may well have offered a robust critical assessment of a reality show singer fronting one of rock's most revered bands), the pairing will still appear at five European shows this summer.
Lambert's not overawed by the challenge. "I've sung other people's music all my life," he says. "It's what I did on American Idol, and I think one of the things I was known for was making them my own. I am incredibly inspired by Freddie Mercury, and there are things you can't not do when you're singing one of his songs because they are part of the song, and he wrote those songs with the boys. I find my own moments though."
He is eager to praise the loyalty of his fans, the Glamberts, appreciating that the time for a pop star to worry is when no one's camped outside their house at four in the morning; but he has seen things that disturb him, like fan fiction, the interpolation of your heroes into pornographic stories for the internet. "It was not an arousing experience," he says of reading about himself having it off. "The one I read was a little creepy. They always show me having relations with someone I have never – and would never – have relations with. I find it funny the fans get so wrapped up in those myths, but if they want to, they can go on fantasising about it."
If Lambert's reaching No 1 is being held as a landmark event in attitudes to sexuality, then his final remark suggests he has no fear about middle America's opinion of him. Asked which mantra he would be more likely to repeat in times of stress – What Would Jesus Do? or What Would Freddie Mercury Do? – he doesn't hesitate: "Freddie Mercury, definitely. He'd put on a really great costume and just laugh it off."

NEW YORK – Music Choice said today that it will celebrate Gay Pride Month this June in support of LGBT equality.
A special category titled “Celebrate Equality” will appear on MC On Demand from June 4 through July 1 and feature videos from artists who promote self-confidence and inner pride including Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, P!nk, Katy Perry and more.
Also in the category will be Music Choice’s latest new original program titled The FWord, which will feature Adam Lambert (see video below). The show will appear June 11 in the folder.
To help educate and inspire tens of millions of Music Choice viewers, a 45-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) from Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund will appear directly following videos in the category.
The PSA’s are part of its Give A Damn Campaign and feature Elton John, Ricky Martin, Kim Kardashian, Jason Mraz, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, and many more. Music Choice will also air the PSA on its website and promote LGBT awareness on its social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.

MONTREAL - When we met Thursday morning, Adam Lambert was in remarkably good spirits.
The flamboyant, glammy pop star, who was the runner-up in the 2009 edition of American Idol, is on a promotional tour talking up his sophomore album, Trespassing. And he says he's really digging the reaction he's been getting in Canada.
Canada has "a different mindset," said Lambert, sitting on the balcony of a swanky suite at the W Hotel. "You're more open. Music audiences here might not get turned off by a couple of things that audiences in the States get caught up in. Like sexuality. Like alternative representation of masculinities. That's a tougher sell in America."
His alternative representation of masculinity sparked much chatter during his Idol run, and shortly after coming in second on the top-rated music-competition TV show, he told a Rolling Stone reporter he was gay. When Trespassing debuted at No. 1 on the American charts a couple of weeks back, there was a lot of talk that this was a major breakthrough, given that he's an openly gay artist.
Lambert said he has no issues with folks seeing him as a poster boy for positive gay representation in the entertainment world. But he still seems a little taken aback by just how big an issue it was when he discussed his sexuality in Rolling Stone.
"I didn't know how that was going to play out," Lambert said. "I now realize how much impact it does have. It's weird, because I've been out of the closet and comfortable with everything since I was 18. Then 10 years later, I'm auditioning for American Idol and all of a sudden it's an issue. I'm like, 'Oh, really? It hasn't been an issue for me since I was a teenager.' It was a lot to take on."
"The first big interview after the show was with Rolling Stone, and she didn't even have to ask. It just came up in conversation. That's what's funny. The perception is that I was in the closet during the show. But I wasn't. I was open with everyone. It just never came up in conversation on the air. That's the big learning curve - that when you're something alternative to the mainstream and all of a sudden you're introduced to the mainstream, you have to think differently. It's an odd path."
Lambert says he certainly owes a debt to earlier male pop stars who challenged traditional notions of sexuality - gender-bending '70s pioneers like David Bowie and Freddie Mercury from Queen.
"I'm totally inspired by them," said Lambert. "I love challenging the mainstream perception of masculinity.
It's fun. At the beginning, a lot of what I was doing was to remind people that that was so great. Because it's been a minute since we've had that kind of artistry from male stars."
Speaking of Queen, Lambert will be stepping into Mercury's shoes to front a reunited Queen this summer, with a series of dates set for Russia, Poland and England.
On the 2009 American Idol finale, he and that year's winner, Kris Allen, teamed up with Roger Taylor and Brian May from Queen to belt out We Are the Champions.
"I feel honoured to be asked, first of all, and I feel I have my work cut out for me," said Lambert. "But I think it's going to be a good growing experience."
There are no plans to bring the Lambert-fronted Queen to North America, in part because the Queen Extravaganza - a Taylor-produced tribute band - is already out on the road in this part of the world.
Lambert mostly just wants to focus on his own music, and he feels he's in a great place. He believes Trespassing is a more cohesive disc than 2009's For Your Entertainment, he is already thinking of mounting a major tour for 2013 and he is super happy that his second al-bum debuted atop the album sales charts. That made him feel "completely, 100 per cent validated and relieved."
When he said he was surprised, I asked: "Why would you be surprised that your al-bum was No. 1? You're Adam Lambert."
"Exactly. That's why I was surprised."
And if he's opening a door for other gay artists, all the better, says Lambert.
"I would always like to think it doesn't matter. But the sad truth is, it does mat-ter. So what I'm hoping is that this signifies that it doesn't matter and record companies will start taking more risks. That they'll realize it's viable to have someone that's out as long as the music's good."

With a No. 1 album under his spangled belt and five upcoming concerts with the surviving members of Queen, it's a good time to be Adam Lambert. Fuse chatted with the American Idol runner-up about working with Pharrell Williams on Trespassing and taking on the task of filling Freddie Mercury's imposing shoes (or lack thereof, as the case often was).
"I'm pumped. I have some songs I don't quite know all the way, so I have some things to learn," Lambert admits to Fuse. "I don't know what I'm wearing yet, hopefully it's fabulous. I'm just looking forward to paying tribute to the great songs of Queen and legacy of Freddie Mercury. My goal for the evening is just to sing the sh*t out of the songs." Hell yeah!
The "Never Close Our Eyes" singer also talks about interpreting Queen's songs so that he can remain true to himself as an artist. "Freddie—one of the things that made him so brilliant—is you always understood what he was trying to communicate by the way his voice sounded and his phrasing and his energy," Lamberts says. "My goal is to communicate the same idea. I'm going to be myself up there, but pay respect in a tasteful way."
Glambert also tells us about the joy of Freddie Mercury performing shoeless and in short shorts. "One of my favorite Freddie performances is… I think it was Montreal, where he's barefoot in the shorts," Lambert says, (skip to 3:08 for that visual). "I'm like, he's just wearing those little shorts up there and no shoes. He doesn't give a sh*t about anything and I love that. I love how free he was on stage."
