THE CROSS - SHOVE IT TOUR NOTES

Unfortunately not much footage has ever surfaces of The Cross live. There are a few bootlegs though so those have to suffice but no YT vids unfortunately. As the album was made mostly by Roger and Spike, this tour was the first real chance for the band to gel. Roger was the frontman remember and he made the most of swinging his guitar around. Roger was really trying to keep this as separate from Queen as possible which is why there is only one Queen track that is ever played in I'm In Love With My Car (not counting Heaven For Everyone which wouldn't truly become a Queen track for another 7 years.) Roger didn't even draw too much from his first two solo albums although a number of tracks did sneak in the setlist, most usually Man On Fire, Strange Frontier and It's An Illusion. One interesting note is the non-album track they played, Let's Get Drunk or possibly Let's Get Drunk (and Be Somebody). This was reportedly written by guitarist Clayton Moss and he sang lead vocals on the song.

Dave Clark produced this specific performance of Time as a charity gala for AIDS benefit. Freddie agreed to appear and sang alongside Cliff Richard. His voice is a bit tired but it is still quite powerful.

1989 begins with THE MIRACLE



A little background:

- The band took time off after their 1986 tour and 3 out of the 4 members were fairly prolific in their solo universe with Freddie getting diagnosed with AIDS (although he wouldn't tell band members until sessions for the next album) and working with Montserrat Caballe. Roger worked with The Cross, and Brian worked with Anita Dobson with whom he would get together with while his marriage with Chrissy fell apart.

- The band made a huge change in the way they worked. They decided early on that all the songs would be credited to Queen (Mercury/May/Taylor/Deacon). Brian said it was the best choice they ever made since people stopped being possessive of only their own songs and instead got possessive of everything which in turned made for more work with the group instead of what had happened in most of the 80s with bandmates working more apart than together. Even with all things credited to Queen, enough knowledge of how the band writes, and some quotes in the media you can mostly determine who wrote what song or have a general idea...so knowing that all things were credited to Queen, I will be crediting who I thought was mostly behind it.

- In that vein it is here that John began slowly fading from the band. His songwriting credits began to dip significantly.

- The original title of the album was going to be The Invisible Men

- The CD was released with extra tracks. I would consider the main tracklisting to be the vinyl track listing.

- Released on May 22nd, 1989. It hit #24 in the US. It hit #1 in the UK. It hit #1 in Austria, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Switzerland. It hit #3 in Italy. It hit #23 in Japan. It hit #4 in Portugal and Spain. It hit #6 in Sweden.

- Hailed as an album that returned to their roots, it didn't quite work out that way. The album is among the least favorite of the fans although in my honesty, I couldn't tell you why. Much has been made that with all the demos that were leaked from this album, that the band chose the wrong songs to fill the album. There is a lot of filler and perhaps the band was getting used to the new process and it wouldn't be perfected until next album. I personally think one of the culprits is the fact that the album opener(s) aren't strong openers and perhaps they set the tone not quite right...but there are a ton of tracks I love on this album

- Sadly out of all the songs recorded during these sessions...only one has EVER been played live by any faction of Queen. I Want It All The rest were never attempted. First off because Freddie never toured, but even solo, they weren't tried live which surprised me. There were a few I was hoping Adam was going to try in 2012 but it wasn't meant to be.

- According to an interview with Mike Read on the BBC these two were born out of a studio jam. Roger was away on a skiing holiday when Party was developed but was there for Khasoggi's Ship. Khashoggi might be more Freddie led than anything but it was definitely a jam

- Adnan Khashoggi is the Khashoggi in question, a Saudi entrepreneur and arms dealer who formed the large Swiss property company, Triad.

- I think the only problem with the tracks are the fact that they lead off the album. If these were filler tracks somewhere towards the end they wouldn't be as disliked. I actually have a lot of fun with the tracks myself though and they are fun to singalong to.

talon, I am still reading too. I heard a rumor yesterday that Brian and Roger were working on a new recording project together. I was wondering if you had heard that and if there was any truth to it.

I hear a ton of different rumors all the time about both of them.  Where did you hear your news from..as there anything more to it?  Those details will let me know how to respond to how truthful they are (with what I know...)?

Until I hear what you are specifying:  There are a few rumors.  This is what I have.

Brian is working on:

- A live album from the small acoustic tour he just did with Kerry

- A new studio album with Kerry which would most
likely include: Born Free (as the single they did a few months back), The Kissing Me Song (the new single about to be released), Crazy Little Thing
Called Love, Life Is Real (based on the fact that these two songs were regulars during the last tour), amongst other songs both covers and new.

- He is working on an update of the Badger Badger Badger Parody song which is partially on YouTube already.

- He is working on an album of sorts with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.  This was based on old unused riffs by Tony that Brian thought would be cool to make the skeleton of a song with and let fans jam along with Tony and Brian.

Roger is working on:

- A new album which should be detailed shortly.  He went on vacation and is now back in the studio finishing it up supposedly.

- A solo retrospective of sorts -Whether this is a Best of compilation or a solo box set....I'm hoping for the latter!

- Working on Live at the Rainbow 1974 for release but is still probably a year away.  -- Possibly a box?

- Possibly working on a box set of live from the 70s (late 70s being the guess to replace the Live Killers album)

- Possibly working on a "Ballads compilation" that may or may not included a "new" track.  Speculation being that either finally a release of one of the two Michael Jackson/Freddie tracks that Brian and Roger spruced up...more likely There Must Be More To Life Than This OR an archive track that was never released (something along the lines of say hopefully Let Me In (Your Heart Again).  Or something completely different that there has been no mention of.

So there has been nothing that I've heard about a secret recording project per se...but with rumors, etc. it may be that someone heard about the Queen + MJ tracks and surmised they were doing something newer...or that a "new track" for a ballad compilation might be an actual new Brian & Roger track...instead of the more likely archive track.

talon, LOL! All that? Brian and Roger are busy indeed.

I saw the conjecture about Brian and Roger on Brian's twitter feed. It seemed
vague what was going on ... the gist to be that they were
planning a remakes album with contemporary stars, including PSY (and it
is hoped, Adam). But Brian said they were still just in the talking
stage, so who knows. With Queen, it sounds like you can never take it to
the bank until it actually happens.And maybe not even then.
