origin.misc.pagesuite.com/pdfdownload/0747643f-5495-44df-98c5-85ef376d64d0.pdfon tour LSi - February 2015 www.lsionline.co.uk41 QUEEN + Adam Lambert I pondered this show long after I had left the auditorium. Here’s a band that spawned one of the most successful jukebox musicals ever,We Will Rock You; with the exception of Mamma Mia!, probably the most successful. That show over the years has allowed the huge mass of Queen fans to saturate themselves in an ocean of nostalgia, yet here we are in 2015 and the latest tour by the actual band is filling arenas all over the world and garnering fantastic press. Partly it’s because they have, in Adam Lambert, found a worthy front man. I balked a few years back when the Queen and Paul Rogers promotion went out, two great talents undoubtedly, but a bit of a fish on a bicycle for my tastes. Lambert is much more the part, but make no mistake, he maybe an American Idol runner-up, but this is no pastiche Freddie Mercury karaoke show: Lambert is his own man. If I were to characterise his presence on stage, and Lambert won’t thank me for saying this, it would be somewhere between the prancing pimpernel of Prince, and Conchita Wurst, the bearded transvestite who won last years’ Eurovision Song Contest; that strange allure of startling vocal ability coupled with eyes that could render a thirteen year old public school boy naked and willing with one glance. He’s dangerous to watch, his performance teeters on the edge; one percentage point more on the camp gas pedal and the whole edifice would crash and burn. Actually, when I recollect the 1986 tour, Freddie had that about him too, but that’s not to underplay Lambert’s outstanding vocal ability, which is what makes it all OK. read more at link above

more - seriously this is a really good read on the mechanics of the sound
“It is a fucking loud stage,” says Collins. “Roger has his own large drum-fills, plus there are 21 wedges on stage and a couple of side-fills. Fortunately, a while back I was offered a Telefunken 81 to try. I couldn’t use it for Eric, he’s too on and off the mic, but for all the singers in this band, and that’s everyone, they’re ideal - nice rejection off the back and great tone. It doesn’t give me anything in the top end that won’t help.” A simple statement that reveals a great deal. “I just have to watch Adam - he can make some frequencies sing, around 5 and 6kHz can rattle. ..."

It doesn’t give me anything in the top end that won’t help.” A simple statement that reveals a great deal. “I just have to watch Adam - he can make some frequencies sing, around 5 and 6kHz can rattle. ..." And here's some great info from the article about Adam's sound engineer:Gary Stokes has been there since just after those initial gigs in Eastern Europe that Rob Collins mentioned. “I’m mainly a front-of-house engineer, and in a way that’s the kind of mix Adam needs. I do a lot of Canadian acts, although I now live in the US - K.D. Lang in particular, and Sarah McGloughlin the last few years. The connection to Adam was through K.D. Lang’s management, who also handle Adam. This gig is very unusual, which seems to be typical for me these days - I seem to get called when others struggle. Adam likes a very produced musical mix which is why my FOH approach works in my favour - this is not a monitor gig by any stretch.” And info on who wears In Ear Monitors (IEMs): Spike has in-ears and if he’s in trouble will pop them in; Neal on Bass uses his IEMs 100%, and Rufus, being of the younger generation, also uses his IEMs all the time,” the IEM system is Sennheiser. JJ continues: “The B stage is a noisy area, so they all tend to use them there, except Brian, who never uses IEM. For Roger, he needs his vocal over the sound from his kit, obviously. And great info from the video director:We have the usual long lens FOH: it’s very functional and spends a lot of time on Adam, but I avoid it when I can as the image is inevitably a bit flat. I do like to take my images from close to stage, and I do like to take those iconic rock star poses, which this band does really well. So I get a lot of what I need almost without trying. ... Price is recording every camera from every show for “who knows what? The audience are often moved to tears. It’s quite emotional. My main thing is to catch every nuance and flourish of the band; all the little details of the music that the audience all know so well, a little guitar arpeggio here, a drum roll there. It’s also about catching the mood of the musicians, conveying the joy of playing to the audience; Brian doesn’t smile often, but when he does that image is worth it. So I don’t stage this around what I want to do, but around what the audience wish to experience, and do that by giving them a better view.” It was my observation that the sheer joy of the band on stage, conveyed intimately on screen, goes some way to driving the energy in the room. Taylor, for one, knows just how to give little glances to camera that twang the emotions. Plus there is more in the article about lighting and all other aspects of the show's production!
