I didn't watch the Super Bowl or the half-time entertainment. But this article from The Onion, cracked me up. "SANTA CLARA, CA—Disappointing the thousands of fans in attendance as well as an estimated 100 million viewers watching at home, the Super Bowl 50 halftime show was marred Sunday by the stadium’s functioning sound system, sources confirmed. “Right from the beginning, the sound was working normally, and unfortunately, I could clearly hear the singing,” said 29-year-old spectator Joe Kessler, adding that the show’s audio feed, which was amplified throughout the stadium and transmitted to television broadcasts with no technical issues, made the performances by Beyonce, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars completely unbearable. “There was definitely nothing wrong with the speakers or the microphones. It’s a shame, because the perfect sound quality just ruined the whole thing.” Kessler added that he hopes Super Bowl organizers would learn from the incident and avoid a similar disaster next year." www.theonion.com/article/super-bowl-halftime-show-marred-functioning-sound--52312

I know they book pop.acts because money. But you would think Queens catalogue would suit an arena type crowd then pop songs? I guess for Qal to do Superbowl. Adam would need a huge year. And get three or so radio hits. At least top ten Billboard hit. Im.actually hoping Qal release an album next year. If Adam eveR does Rock, its with Queen.

After the 9/11 terrorist tragedy, all sporting events - games, etc. -- stopped for several weeks. When 'life was ready to return to normal', my DH and I prepared to go to a San Francisco Giants baseball game. I asked my son - who, at the time, worked for this organization - if, on this night when we began our heartbroken, terrorized journey back to 'normal' - if, for just this once, the National Anthem could be sung by the citizens; the ordinary people who dream of heroes, who try to be heroes, in everyday life. He listened to me. Our collective voice brought the most beautiful 'Star Spangled Banner' I've ever heard into the ballpark. I felt the vibration in the stands; I watched old men, with hands over their hearts, holding their ball caps, singing with tears in their eyes. I don't understand why we've made our National Anthem something to be listened to, instead of something to be proclaimed in song. I thought Gaga's rendition, today, was amazing. Even more amazing would have been the voices of 50,000 alongside her. If our children don't sing the song, how will they ever remember the words? or the question - does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Thanks momtomany. I agree...always love singing the NA and never quite 'got' the star thing. As a side comment, when i lived in the US, I sang with a Sweet Adelines group and got plenty of good natured ribbing when we sang the SSB and America the Beautiful At one event the group sang O Canada for me!! Great memory!

Whatever happened to that live DVD and CD of QAL filmed in Sydney back in 2014??? Will we ever see it or another one?

Please, just sing it, sing it well, and let the game begin.
I have always wondered why, and when, it became the norm to have a 'star' sing the national anthem rather than the public....what is the point of that? To be honest, I never go to sporting events so I really do not know the norm in Canada any more...we used to sing O Canada at the start and God Save the Queen at the end of almost any public event but that died out years ago.... I don't remember the last organized singing of the anthem...though I do remember the odd spontaneous outburst. Do Americans ever just bust out singing your own anthem? Do other countries also use celebrities rather than the people? Curious..... By the way...I thought she did a really good job...and less melismas than many others.... momtomany has a great point...unless there are opportunities to sing the anthem, how would young people be able to carry on a tradition. Schools seem to have always taken the lead in coaching the anthem. I hope that always is in place. If someone riffs and changes things up too much, no one can follow. I should think this would be an important concept for big event planners to recognize and discuss with the guests invited to sing the anthems. Not that these organizers are listening to me...but maybe we should be voicing these kinds of thoughts. It is a national sense of pride that flounders. People should be able to sing their national anthem. I thought Gaga was better than many others...she can sing! Professional hockey and football are two sports that I attend. They always have the national anthem "O Canada" (not--Oh Canada) sung pre-game in Canada. Only for special events or the final games are celebrities brought in. The Flames hockey team usually has had the same person for many years leading the anthem, which includes the Star Spangled Banner if the opposing team is from the USA. And yes we have many Americans living in Calgary so there is singing happening. The Stampeder football team has a variety of singers throughout the season. (local good singers, many school age and even some elementary school age singers). (Note my moniker --stampsgal ) The number of people who sing a long varies. Many do not sing--sad but true. Those who do sing usually sing softly. I am assuming this is not from to lack of knowing the words but a lack of confidence about their voice quality. (Like meGrinSmiliey ) As well, once a group starts singing the volume builds and there is also the ease for recalling the words. (Much like Adam's songs...I could not sing his songs word for word if I had to sing them on my own but in a group I go for it! (yah ok... I am a bad fan!) There is a swell of emotion when serious world issues/military concerns happen and are highlighted during pre-game, or things like recognizing military/police/firemen Olympic athletes etc. That is when voices "blow the roof off" the anthem! ps---O Canada is sung at major events in schools. (special assemblies, Remembrance Day ceremony, and Graduation--- the band may play or recorded music used or not, and choirs or an individual(s) leads.) At some private schools the anthem is sung in the classroom once a week on formal dress day, with a lead over the PA system.
