Love your crazy, late night ramblings, Cassie! I agree that Adam has set the bar so high, are we afraid that he is too perfect? Or that we're not discerning enough? I'm so jealous as I won't have my DVD until Wednesday, and you're all flailing and squeeing and immersing yourselves in Adam goodness, so I intend to fully enjoy it when I finally get it!

musicgirl: Thanks for posting those youtubes of your native folk music. There is something beautiful and moving about male voices together in a cappella harmony, isn't there? You find such groups in so many genres and cultures. Here in the US we used to have barbershop quartets who sang in those close harmonies with no accompaniment. Not many are still doing it, but male a cappella singing re-emerges every generation, it seems. There have been college male singing groups and fraternity singing groups from way back when, too. The boy bands of the '80s were another incarnation. Today we have the urban beat box style. I enjoy this example of male a cappella singing (from Sweden): There is a singing competion on TV in December called the Sing-Off. We watched it last year, which was the second year it was held, and it will be back in December of this year again. A gospel group from Alabama called Committed won the competion and are now recording an album. Our particular favorites were a group out of Nashville called Street Corner Symphoney. Some of the groups were mixed, and different styles as well, so you might like to check that out this year. Really beautiful singing, which I'm finding so often not the case, post-Adam. I guess we are just so spoiled! www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYyJ0YT087A

Today at 3:58pm, geezlouise wrote: I've been doing some more thinking about training and technique, Adam and his voice, and it's subsequent effect on me.
Though I know I am not as knowledgeable about classical vocal technique as some of you here, I certainly understand and hear the seamless register switching, effortless blending and unique phrasing that are a large part of what help Adam to stand apart from other pop or rock vocalists. Does this enhance my enjoyment of his performances? A thousand times, yes!
Do I believe that the tone and purity of his voice would have pulled me in without the years of technical training? A thousand times yes again!
His voice often brings me to tears and propels me from this world. I often find myself lost in his vocals, unsure of the passage of time. His is not the only voice that does this to me. The others range from having some technical training to none at all. That being said, his is at the top of this list now, and may very well be decades from now. I don’t know.
Is it his training that has elevated his voice to this level for me? Again, I don’t know. But, it doesn’t really matter. I am in love (and in lust) with his voice. Love and lust don’t need reasons to be. They just are.It is all out of my control.
But, at this stage of my life I have learned that I love for keeps. Flings and frivolous affairs have long since ceased to thrill me. I am on this ride for the long haul and don’t really care how I got on.
I want to marry this post. <3
I'm hardly an expert but I guess I'm one of those who are knowledgable in technique. But your words show that all the musical dissection of why Adam is such a skilled vocalist doesn't really matter (although it's fun). The point is, he has something so special and you can feel it in your soul when he sings.
Great post Geezlouise, and great comment with which I totally agree!
I started reading this thread last night and instead of doing work around the house, I've gotten lost here! Thank you Cassie especially and some of the other knowledgeable music fans who've shared their knowledge and impression and answered questions. I'm learning a lot! I don't really have much musical knowledge, played some recorder, and folk guitar in my younger years, and some piano as an adult, but didn't really have a natural aptitude for it and I guess not a passion to devote enough time to it along with other rl issues., but I think I have a relatively good ear.
It's been interesting to see the various examples people have posted and your explanations and examples to support those explanations, Cassie, have really been very illuminating. You really do such a great job explaining things in layman's terms! I recognize and totally appreciate Adam's vocal talent, but to me it is especially the tone, the richness, the clarity, the soaring, effortlessness that appeal. I'm usually more attracted to baritone voices than tenor, but all the things that Adam is capable of with his voice are just incredible. The accoustic Sleepwalker in Zurich gives me goosebumps every time.
Someone posted a clip from current AI contender Jacob, and while I appreciate that he is talented, I didn't even finish watching the clip as he does nothing for me. The R&B type voices don't really connect with me for some reason. I appreciate the talent of opera singers, but it also doesn't connect with me. Some voices just grab you, and others don't, so all the technique and talent which some singers have, still ultimately do not mean much, at least not to me. That is why stanning Adam is such a joy because he has AND the talent AND the technique AND the connection AND the emotion AND I feel him in my heart and soul. As someone else said, it really is an experience, and that experience has added so much to my life these last few years!

What a treasure trove of different kinds of music in this thread! I've downloaded numerous selections, some great voices and some really interesting voices too. For me it's usually about the voice first and foremost, whether it be a great voice or an interesting one. My first stanning was also an Idol contestant, the winner of Canadian Idol Season 2 Kalan Porter. Initially quite successful with album #1. He took a break between album 1 and 2 when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, and was much less successful with album #2. It's always harder in Canada without the major tv talk shows exposure etc. He's since run into some troubles with a producer and lost a bunch of material, but is apparently recording now in LA (apparently he was at one of this year's AMA parties!) Very different from Adam as far as stage persona, rather akward and still shy, but also majorly talented, also plays multiple instruments He showed up recently to sing with an indie artist Emm Gryner in Ontario www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaOzbg1erFE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL One More Try From his last concert tour 2008 for the Wake Up Living album www.youtube.com/user/CindyOBG#p/u/26/hJE8dtcAW5kSingle www.youtube.com/user/CindyOBG#p/u/31/5rQbnHRwvYw

I think everyone has probably gone, but Momtomany, wanted to add my positive wishes for your granddaughter's health. It's so tough when things happen to those most vulnerable and it is so hard to feel helpless. A warm hug to you, and also to Holst for her students. Topia is such a warm and welcoming place, it's hard to see the other side of what people can do to each other.

Finally caught up! What an absolute WIN for Adam on Idol last night! Heard a couple what I would call "wobbly" notes in the first line, but didn't sound flat to me. It was quite low in his range and I don't think it had any impact on how great that performance was. All the positive press and reactions and the jump at Itunes and Amazon are great to see!
Kanadie mentioned it earlier, but one of the great things I love about Adam (along with the overall awesomeness, the smile, the big FULL heart, his charm and charisma, that gorgeous voice the hot bot and handsome face, etc. etc. LOL) is that his diction is just outstanding. I can't think of any other singer who sings the words so clearly. With a lot of singers I find the words often very hard to understand so I find that I pay less attention to the lyrics and more to the voice and the overall melody and sound of the song, but this song is really special to him and he infused so much feeling into it, it made my heart full too. ILHSFM!
Thank you to all the ninjas for finding things, and YEAH for being able to get the remix at Itunes Canada. Would have liked to buy it at AO, but what can you do if they don't make it available to Canadians there!
And happy birthday Melliemom!

Woo! Finally made it all the way through today's thread! Love that the voice is front and centre on the remix! I love it more than any of the other remixes which I bought of course to support Adam. It gets just a little repetitive at the end, but other than that I love it!
And another lovely interview and his heart is full! So is mine!
Welcome dibaby! Everyone's exhausted from squeeing today!

Wow! What a treasure trove we have here today... When I first started following AL, it was his voice that drew me in. I stayed because of his fans. When I was in Jackson Hole, WY, a hotelier of a luxury chain told me that he had a very difficult time getting rid of the aspen trees that were blocking the best views from his property. They tried everything, including burning the trees, but nothing worked. In fact, the trees seemed to come back faster and stronger. As it turned out, he learnt that these trees have an inter-locking root system that nurtures and sustains them during adversities. It's a root community, so to speak, that links, supports and rebuilds the needy. I have often pondered upon the community that Adam is able to build via his voice; be it of music or spoken (and unspoken) words. What I now learn is that the voice that echoes the most in me, most often, is that from his fans. Thank you. I love this analogy, and it's so true here at Adamopia. Such great posts here this morning. Kapsiz, big Hugs to you! i so admire your strength. NoAngel, you have such great insights and such a great way with words. Sunday mornings are a special time here. I'd just like to hug all of you wonderful people!
